2005-01-21 10:52:15 AM
How about 'I (boom) NY'?

2005-01-21 10:52:41 AM

Yeah, because the terrorist said "Fark that, Boston is too cold this weekend, let's get the hell outta here."

Either that, or our pissy attitude convinced them to let us live in our misery, what could be any worse.

Scuttlebutt I'm hearing on this is that the tipster was more than likely a Chinese mafia guy trying to get some rivals in deep egg rolls.

When Boston fails to win the World Series this year, expect to hear of the "Dirty Bomb Curse." The Red Sox will then not win until Boston is irradiated

2005-01-21 10:58:07 AM
You know, given how easy some (most?) Americans are to scare, you really don't need to actually *do* anything to them to effect terror - they're quite capable of whipping themselves into a frenzy of paranoid shadow-jumping all by themselves. Especially when you manage to hit *all* the hotbuttons at once - illegal aliens, via Mexico, from China, possibly Muslim, trying to detonate a dirty bomb. Maybe it'd be worse if they'd burned a US flag before skipping over the Rio Grande, or shouted "Evolution is true!" at some McJesus people.

And the mainstream media doesn't help.

2005-01-21 10:59:10 AM
OK, well... Which would you prefer? They not say anything and then if something goes "BOOM" in Beantown, complain about it?

Meh... I was more worried about this being a feint anyway.

A previous thread about this ( I think on TF) contained some prattling about the damned if you do damned if you don't nature of warnings but this stuff, though it seems to be either downplayed or dismissed, seems to strike a better balance: not so vague as to be totally useless other than serving to instill dread and specific enough to generate actual leads.

2005-01-21 11:00:18 AM
And don't forget to look out for people carrying alamanacs, they are terrorists. Also look out for inner tubes and foam beer coolers, they are terrorist tools. Also be on the lookout for scuba divers, they could be terrorists. Are you scared yet? Boo!

On the talk radio show I co-host here in Boston we had a National Guard member call in saying he was put on standby because of this "non-story". It's still being taken seriously by the authorities, even if they are downplaying it.

Cops were pulling over asians because of this. Sickening. Course, not a single news outlet reported that...

Now please excuse me while I patch up the plastic sheets covering my house.

What a SHOCKING revelation. With all those accurate intelligence sources and credible information, I am left clueless in understanding how this was some sort of hoax.

"...possibly attaining somewhat useful information from an unconfirmed source that may or may not have viable information on the whereabouts of four unidentified men being saught after in or around the Boston community in connection with some sort of terroristic threat of an undisclosed nature"

2005-01-21 11:11:13 AM
cnn just reported that they are now searching for up to 10 people, including the 4 china men.

next line after that was 'the source still is uncorraborated(sp)

2005-01-21 11:11:35 AM
So does anyone think they would announce or warn an entire city like Boston, say if the threat is real? Wouldn't that cause major panic? Could you imagine trying to evacuate an entire city? Would the government really warn us?

2005-01-21 11:11:47 AM
Thank you, Drudge, for inspiring panic with your insipid approach to "journalism."

It used to be that "I heard from a guy that knows this guy that some guy he overheard on the phone said..." was not considered rock-solid info, but Drudge has liberated the truth from the facts.

Before you start whining about ABC, just take a look at who said "dirty bomb" first.

oh good, this means i can head into town tomorrow night without worry.
my wife hadn't even heard anything about it until i mentioned something to her last night.

2005-01-21 11:13:58 AM
It's all a problem of appearances.

If it turns out that the authorities ignored or downplayed a tip that actually did relate to a terrorist attack, the politicans responsible would be hosed.

But the authorities get large numbers of unconfirmed, anonymous tips. They have to do due diligence on every one, and they do - it's just this time, the threat got to the media. So the authorities have to do public due diligence - Romney flying back to the State, Guardsmen put on alert, etc. It's face-saving 101. Problem is, it also convinces the public that there is something to be concerned about, when really they're more likely to be killed on I-93 this rush-hour than by those nasty terrorists.

It's a vicious cirle, really.

2005-01-21 11:14:20 AM
I don't care what Drudge says, WorldNetDaily told me there won't be any more attacks on American soil because Bush told Bin Laden we would nuke Mecca.

No really. Drudge = gossip. WorldNetDaily = truth.

It had absolutely nothing to do with yesterday's address.

2005-01-21 11:18:48 AM
Let us remember the original fark headline:

Drudge, ABC Radio reporting possible dirty bomb plot unfolding in Boston

Let us also remember other sources who reported it:

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news/4108755/detail.html
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A21705-2005Jan19.htm
http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/ns/news/story.jsp?id=2005011916460002730482&dt=200 50119164600&w=RTR&coview=

Of course, the Post and CNN have removed their stories, just as Drudge has done. Let us notice that they will be not be called out on it, while Drudge will be.

2005-01-21 11:20:38 AM
Here's a couple more people who reported it as well:

Great. What the hell am I going to do with all this duct tape and plastic sheets?

I know there's some snappy and humorous comment that should follow that remark, but right now I got nothin' at all.

2005-01-21 11:27:26 AM
Nothing to see here folks. Continue being scared, don't ask too many questions. We are your government, we are your friends. We're only going to scare you a little bit at a time so that your collective minds don't ever start asking the real questions and ask what the real motives behind this administration's actions are.

Damn Straight man!
"McJesus People": Very funny!
I'm going to have to remember that.
I'd love to see a comic strip of McJesus.
"WWJO: What Would Jesus Order?
Definitely a Super Sized DQP Extra Value Meal."
"turn the other cheek my son, to fit another big mac in thy fat mouth."
"refuseth not the man who asks thee to super sizeth"

There was Dirty bomb in my bathroom this morning.

2005-01-21 11:31:27 AM
This whole "being scared of every news item" is growing really old. If you want to be scared, watch the footage of Washington riot police spraying tear gas into the crowds (behind 8ft steel fences I might add) at the Prez's inauguration yesterday, and hauling off protesters in police vans. Yeah. Rock on "freedom". I thought the whole point of being a "Free" country was that you had the right to voice your opinions and protest when you felt the need. Apparently not.

Yeah, I remember the good old days when protestors were allowed to get right up next to the president and scream in his face.

Drudge has moved past being an irresponsible reporter and into being a potential risk to public safety. This was unacceptable.

Let us also remember which of those parties actually used the words "dirty bomb" first.

Nice try, though.

That's because the Post, CNN, Google, etc didn't break the Lewinsky story. Ever since Drudge that he's been deemed unreliable.
