Before you cast you reel for cross-dressing cuttlefish remember to renew your Crying Fish and Game License.

"Then they trick their way past the females partner and often succeed in mating with her."

I guess these fish have seen Tom Hanks in "Bosom Buddies" then ?

My ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend--excuse me, wife--studies cuttlefish.

I wonder if he's in for a nasty shock one of these days.

Mmm... Cuttlefish...

\Except Cuttlefish isn't a fish, it's a type of squid.

"To compete, wimpy fellas hide their fourth arms a male characteristic and change colour to copy the females mottled skin."

Usually men like to call theirs a "third leg". I like to call mine El Martillo de Dios.

I thought that fish tasted funny
2005-01-20 02:23:39 PM
a) that's not cross-dressing, as cross-dressing involves dressing, not simply tucking your... well, you get the idea.

b) "To compete, wimpy fellas hide their fourth arms".... Eh? Fish have arms?

/clams have feet!

Species != gender.

Just for the record, cuttlefish are teh awesome. If you ever get a chance to check them out in an aquarium, do so. Bonus points if you watch them when they are being fed.

Do the manly male fish feel ashamed when they realize they tried to mate with another male, go to a sea vent in shame and boil themselves, or do they just gang up on the sissy fish and make him thier biatch?

If I'm not mistaken, scientists have known of this behavior for quite some time. I remember seeing a Discovery channel special on aquatic species over a year ago that demonstrated this. Why is this news?
2005-01-20 02:43:09 PM
Yeah I remember something similar occuring with elephant seals. How there were a lot of males with almost no trunk to blend in with the ladies.

They tuck in their masculine part in an attempt to look female.

Does that remind anyone else of this guy?

See guys, sometime the male really does just want to cuddle.

2005-01-20 03:53:12 PM
Ahh, so that is how homosexuality got started.

Some guy thought he could get closter to a girl by dressing like one, but instead he gets jumped by another guy. The would have stopped when they found out, but like most men, were too lazy to find a real girl.

these are the kinds of thoughts that made it neccesary for me to be separated from others in grammar school.

ARG this is so wrong, this is hardly the first species to do this. A local Michigan sun-fish does the very same thing, but it even has 3 seperate male phenotypes. The first acts like any other male, the second acts as a female - letting it get close enough to a real female which is usually in the primary males' nest. The third type darts into the nest the exact moment the primary male releases his gametes into the water around the female. What's interesting is that a researcher here studied a small population for several months, but they produced no offspring. It turned out all the fish were fooling each other too well and that there were no females present in the population at all!

Apparently this happens often in the animal kingdom, far be it for journalists to do 5 minutes of googling before making sweeping statements.

Here's a link to said sun-fish, sorry no html skills.

some folks have never heard of the blue-gilled sunfish.

3 brands of males and 1 female. the type-male, the "sneaky farker" who waits in the vegetation until the male leaves so he can drop his own seed... and the female impersonator who drop seeds all he wants without being seen as a threat and also draws the attention of the other males so they lay their seed in a totally wrong location.

dammit, Solicitous ninja'd me.

That researcher wouldn't have happened to be Prof. Joan Roughgarden of Stanford would it? Evolution's rainbow?

Male architeuthis dux (giant squid) have been found with sperm packets injected into their arms. Presumably, this occurs because in the normal course of mating (wherin the male squid uses a meter-long penis to inject sperm into the arms of the female) the victim either gets ambushed by another male, or is so excited that he literally shoots himself in the foot.

Cephalopods. Their sex lives are more interesting than most Fark Personals subscibers'.

/never expected to be able to say 'meter-long penis' in an acceptable context today

sperm packets injected into their arms...

Man. Injected? And I get all biatchy when it dries and glues the hair on my belly to my skin. [crack] [RRIIIP]
