Last week's, "Marine provokes suicide by cop to avoid returning to Iraq" headline revised after it is discovered that he wasn't scheduled to be returned

My brain is confused.

He became withdrawn and unable to hold a conversation, and told them gruesome stories of house-to-house combat and watching Marines commit suicide. He questioned the war and said he did not want to go back.

That sounds like post-traumatic stress to me, just being in a War Zone cane fark up some people.

Hell I've seen guys freak just being at sea on an aircraft carrier.

For some people it don't take much to send them over the edge!

What does that headline mean?

are my gas prices any lower yet?

read the farking article.

he never saw combat.

Dont worry

My comrades in the mainstream media will still find a way to blame this on Bush

/ maybe some kind of memo hmm.

See, last week, if you were a faithful reader, you'd have seen the headline "Marine provokes suicide by cop to avoid returning to Iraq" (or something to that effect). It's now come to light that he wasn't supposed to return to Iraq.

All that, and I haven't RTFA, I just know English.

"That sounds like post-traumatic stress to me, just being in a War Zone cane fark up some people."

Nah, not possible when you don't see any combat

"During our investigation, we found he wasn't due to go back to Iraq, never faced combat situations and never even fired his gun," Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputy Jason Woodman said Saturday.

He also had some cocaine in his system

Whoops! Imagine a "journalist" getting something wrong! Quel surprise!

"The military trained him to kill. Let's say he didn't see combat, but he was there,' Cortez said."

Maybe he watched "Platoon" or "MASH" one too many times.

The media was all over this. Their reasoning was painfully and embaressingly obvious. They cast soldiers in a bad light every chance they get.

Blame the war
Soldiers are bad
Bush is bad

"...never even fired his gun"
Unless that means died a virgin, it doesn't make sence.

Now how to undo all the leftwing newsgroup posts ? Look up "Andres Raya" in deja.com or google.com.

So he was a liar and a gang banger. Interesting.

Maybe, but maybe not. The guy could have just been a whack job from the word go and his experiences in the war may have had zip to do with this. From what the article says, he was never actually involved in the fighting.

Not defending him, his actions, or this godawful mess in Iraq, but before we slap a PTSD lable on this dude as an explanation for his actions lets make sure the facts are straight. People out there that actually do suffer from this disorder deserve that much.

I onced watched a M*A*S*H marathon.

The next day I couldn't fire my Winchester anymore!
And cutting a Honeydew melon was out of the question.

Oddly, I had a craving for Grape Nehi.
And cross dressing.

This whole story seems a little fishy to me. Why was he shopping for combat supplies? The "gang member" reasoning sounds a little too simplistic and flaky to me.

http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=Andres+Raya&btnG=Search+News

google news kicks ass. i see so much on google news that eventually shows up here (probably after kickback agreements)

i'm waiting for a headline to duplicate the marine who went awol, didn't go awol, was kidnapped, didn't get kidnapped, is missing, is in custody, isn't in custody, was actually kidnapped, got run over by a reindeer, etc. etc. etc...

2005-01-17 11:57:54 AM
You know, maybe the dude was just farking crazy to begin with?

underdog - Why was he shopping for combat supplies? The "gang member" reasoning sounds a little too simplistic and flaky to me.

So PTS sounds more reasonable even though he never saw combat and wasn't going back to Iraq? And the "gang member" reasoning is less believable even though they found evidence of him wearing gang colors and using gang signs? Man, some of you people are so willingly blind.

2005-01-17 12:03:24 PM
So did he make his list and check it twice?

WTF is the point of making a list anyways, just buy the s**t and be done with it! Writing it down doesn't make you a big man.

i have an idea. lets round up all the known gang members in the u.s. and send them to iraq. give them lots of guns, ammo and drugs. we can send them to north korea next. if they get the job done, they will all be heros. if they get killed, population control. (not to mention, finacialy less burdening to us)

sounds like a cover-up to me.

I knew the guy who wrote the original story at the Modesto Bee. I'm sure it wasn't an attempt to blame Bush so much as some keystone cop action resulting in bad analysis from Ceres, California's Finest. The Mod Bee is pretty conservative.

2005-01-17 12:19:04 PM
Schizo, then they would just set up shop there. Oddly enough, the gangbangers I talked to really aren't out to go and die. They would rather make money, by any means necessary, and ensure their place in the heirarchy of gang life. Dying is an unfortunate side effect, percieved to be a failing of others but not capable of happening to ones self.

/Didn't know every dog had his day, until he seen (sic) his.

untrustworthy

Hey now, don't call me blind just because I think there's more to the story than what we're getting. I wasn't saying the gang story is completely unbelievable. Something strikes me as odd about this story that I can't put my finger on.

2005-01-17 12:24:30 PM
Paranoid: Bad analysis? "Excuse me, Mr. Cokehead. I know you just shot 2 of my compatriots, but wouldn't you rather think about what you've done and make better choices in the future?"
"No, I know you didn't mean to. Don't worry about it. I'll break it to their families. Then, maybe some punch and pie."

Officers/deputied have the capability to make the decision that someone willing to kill 2 officers is probably a danger. If you know of a law enforcement body that is not capable to make this assessment, I suggest you never visit or leave immediately.

oh wait......wrong thread

It's all Bush's fault!!!!!

Who cane up with the original story?

Mary Mapes?
Dan Rather?

Of course our unbiased media would never jump on an ubsubstantiated story just to make Iraq look like another Vietnam.

And they always get the military stories straight.

I just have one question: Medals were mentioned in TFA.
Medals for what???
Is this guy's military record available for examination publically??
Just stop and think folks, before you accept the "official" version of this.

/not a tinfoil hatter, just a Vietnam vet that endured the "all those guys are crazy and it's not the Govt's fault they're just drug addicts or were nuts to start with" bullshiat before they finally owned up to the reality of PTSD and other issues.

Mr. Clarence Butterworth,

Nice Black Forest Cuckoo Clock. I have one of those I picked up in Switzerland.

The liberal media lies. It's really quite pathetic.

GIJoeBob,

I dunno, but it was interesting.

It is kinda stupid to hack into it, since it's basically military computers, but it's kinda funny to play considering all the fun cheats out there.

the engine is pretty much stupidly written, and imo should be open source.

If i knew how, i'd file for a freedom of information act suit to get the source; there is some questionable stuff in the game using our tax dollars.

Wow, the lefties are staying quiet in this thread. Where's the unfortunate logic of the likes of Butterworth when needed?

Is it just me or does it sound like there's more to this than one newspaper article? Let's examine what we do know for sure:

1. This guy was in Iraq. Whether he was in combat operations or not is questionable, most likley not from what I see. But he did claim he saw many guys commit suicide. Many is probably a stretch, but even one can mess you up pretty bad.

2. He was on drugs at the time. Not to make a statement about drugs one way or another, but it will alter your perception of reality, no?

3. He was probably a gang member. There is photographic evidence to suggest this and a shopping list that would make Frank Castle proud. Not exactly the signs of a well-balanced individual.

Conclusion: If this guy was already messed up on drugs, involved in a gang, and not going back to Iraq after having not been in the soup or seen a whole bunch of guys commit suicide, then I highly doubt he had an acute case of PTSD. Perhaps he was just screwed in the head and on coke, and did something to cause police to react with deadly force. Sad and tragic, but the media goes for what will sell. Right now, that's war, sex, and scandal.

2005-01-17 01:06:28 PM
The credo of the liberal media is to "never let the facts interfere with a good story or agenda"

2005-01-17 01:12:52 PM
If you read the articles you'll see that the media reported what the parents and friends said about their Son Reya; as more details surfaced in the days after the shooting, more info came-out. And, this somehow makes the media lying liberals? Bwwww-hhaaa-haaa...

Was he realy going to be sent back to Iraq? No way of knowing for sure now.

Until the media ONLY reports the neo-con agenda in a favorable light - it will always be liberal??? bwaaaaa haaaa...

2005-01-17 01:15:52 PM
CDMaker

And the conservative media is so much more Fair and Balanced, right?

If you really believe there is ANY such thing as fair reporting in this country on either side, well then I happy for you that you think that. Keep taking your media opium, everyone.

2005-01-17 01:18:37 PM
Oh well, I guess they'll have to wait for another 'Viet-Wacky-Iraqi-Case' to project and exploit their liberal ideals onto.
