RE: Teen Girl Squad.

Funny the first time.
Not funny the second time.
Third time deserves a beating.

Reminds me of the skit on Saturday Night Live that always starts around 12:45 a.m., clearly isn't funny, but just keep playing and playing for 10 minutes because they have to put something there and couldn't come up with anything better.

I tried, how I tried, to laugh at this but I justn't couldn't.
Bonus points to JackassBlack for the SNL 12:45 skit comparison.

Am I the only person who hates these Dumb animated on-line cartoons?

I used to date this girl who hated the Simpsons and The Onion. I think it made her feel left out that people around her got the references and were enjoying it. So, in effect, she really hated the part of herself that was unable to understand and enjoy.

Hating ages you.

Kiribub:

Can someone explain to me the function behind a "multi"
guitar? Does it allow for a greater pitch range?

A double-neck guitar is really two guitars on the same body: one neck has 6 strings, the kind virtually everybody under 60 has picked up at one time or another. The other is a 12-string, which has six sets of doubled strings. Each "double-string" set is always sounded together, so it plays more or less like a six-string, but obviously it feels a little different under your fingers.

The 12-string has a different sound, since every note you play is actually two notes. If you've ever heard the distinctive jangly guitar sound of, say, the Byrds (think the intro to their version of "Mr. Tambourine Man"), you've heard a 12-string.

So the double-neck is, theoretically, designed so that if you need to switch between 6-string and 12-string in the middle of a song, you can do it without swapping out guitars. The chances that you'd really need to do that are remote-- in fact, if you don't have a double-neck guitar, the chances that you'll write a song where you need to do that drop to right around zero. ;)

Mostly, the double-neck is a show-offy gimmick. Guitars with more than two-necks are purely visual jokes; there's no real reason for it. They may be playable, but they're really just custom-built pieces of stagecraft.

The thing about the double neck guitars is that they're just cool in a 1970's 'these go to 11' kind of way. As for the 5 neck guitar that was actually Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick who played that particular monster. And I've seen him play it too. The bottom two necks are totally unplayable if he's wearing it on a strap and standing upright. Man what a show!

Hey, 12-sided dice are dodecahedral, not icosahedral (that's a 20-sider!).

And now, I will please stop.

I adore TGS and find it very funny, without fail. Stupid humor? Yes, that's part of the appeal. Completely random and surreal? Yeah, I think that's part of why it's fun, too.

If the humor's not sophisticated enough for you, there's plenty of other places on teh Internets to find teh funny.

I agree with mekkab. If it's not funny to you, you might just not be wired to laugh at it. I find it relaxing because of how dumb and random it is. Maybe you don't. Whatev.

F'rinstance, I don't follow sports, so I don't click in sports threads on Fark. Watching sports is boring to me and I find the entire industry to be mildly ridiculous. Do I post about how dumb it is? Nah. Takes a lot of energy to actively hate something--decrying the dumbness of these flash toons is really a colossal waste of time and effort.

I love Homestar Runner, but every time they put up a TGS instead, it's a wasted week. I keep looking in hopes of finding one as good as Spring Break, where we saw Abraham Lincoln and Henry Rollins.

Hasn't happened.

A scientific expedition disembarks from its plane at the final outpost of civilization in the deepest Amazon rain forest. They immediately notice the ceaseless thrumming of native drums. As they venture further into the bush, the drums never stop, day or night, for weeks.

The lead scientist asks one of the natives about this, and the native's only reply is "Drums good. Drums never stop. Very BAD if drums stop."

The drumming continues, night and day, until one night, six weeks into the trip, when the jungle is suddenly silent. Immediately the natives run screaming from their huts, covering their ears. The scientists grab one boy and demand "What is it? The drums have stopped!"

The terror-stricken youth replies "Yes! Drums stop! VERY BAD!"

The scientists ask "Why? Why? What will happen?"

Wild-eyed, the boy responds,

" . . . BASS SOLO!!!" -

Unless the third neck is in a really odd or open tuning that the song calls for. But I doubt that's why Vai uses it.

That was the first time I have LOL'ed at the computer in a long time. Thanks, Bros Chaps, for a great one.

You do *not* have to be from a certain generation to get it. I swap HR jokes with kids half my age and less. I know a college girl who likes TGS so much (she and her suitemates all have TGS identities; I pity whoever has to be "the ugly one") that she wants to get a white dress with narrow, pale blue, widely-spaced, horizontal pin stripes, to be her TGS outfit. That way she'll look like she was drawn on notebook paper.

"I love Homestar Runner, but every time they put up a TGS instead, it's a wasted week."

I'm guessing they came up with TGS so that they could take a bit of a break on the animating. I mean, they come up with one of these things every week, it's gotta get stressful after a while.

Unless the third neck is in a really odd or open tuning that the song calls for. But I doubt that's why Vai uses it.

In fact that IS why he uses it (at least in concert... obviously he only used it in those David Lee Roth videos to show off).

He switches between playing the two right-handed necks, each of which is set up with a different tone. The left-handed neck has a third tone and is tuned to an open chord, which gets strummed intermittently for texture.

/thinks the Nordegg Special is still the coolest guitar Vai plays
