I personally think the cultural references are hilarious.

You don't watch Homestar Runner for the thoughtful dialogue. You watch things like Strongbad emails for the funny culural moments.

This one had to be Steve Vai's thriple neck heart guitar.
I laughed out loud when I saw that.

... which generation do you have to be to appreciate it again?

/Quite likes SB E-mails.

2005-01-17 09:24:09 AM
cbm5 has distilled the appeal to a T.

For example, the Strong Bad email which was the genesis of TGS had an "easter egg" at the end where the TGS comic was in a snooty independent record store, next to a "Brothers Johnson" record. A loop of Sonic Youths "Teenage Riot" played in the background while the clerk and a customer went back and forth about how each was more "down with the scene" than the other... it was truly hysterical, and truly genius. Yeah the frets are B modal, cuz its that same producer....Albeeno (thats a guitar and a Steve Albini joke)

That being said, this TGS was great. Really really great. While "Three Noses??!?" and "Wave of babies" ( jokes from a previous TGS) are funny in a non sequitor way, this was an allusion dropping festival of funny.

So in conclusion, get a brain, moran. Errm, I mean, this is only funny to the people that get it. If you didn't get it, its not your fault. The Brothers Chaps simply aren't aiming for you.

Kiribub:

Can someone explain to me the function behind a "multi"

A double-neck guitar is really two guitars on the same body: one neck has 6 strings, the kind virtually everybody under 60 has picked up at one time or another. The other is a 12-string, which has six sets of doubled strings. Each "double-string" set is always sounded together, so it plays more or less like a six-string, but obviously it feels a little different under your fingers.

The 12-string has a different sound, since every note you play is actually two notes. If you've ever heard the distinctive jangly guitar sound of, say, the Byrds (think the intro to their version of "Mr. Tambourine Man"), you've heard a 12-string.

So the double-neck is, theoretically, designed so that if you need to switch between 6-string and 12-string in the middle of a song, you can do it without swapping out guitars. The chances that you'd really need to do that are remote-- in fact, if you don't have a double-neck guitar, the chances that you'll write a song where you need to do that drop to right around zero. ;)

Mostly, the double-neck is a show-offy gimmick. Guitars with more than two-necks are purely visual jokes; there's no real reason for it. They may be playable, but they're really just custom-built pieces of stagecraft.

The thing about the double neck guitars is that they're just cool in a 1970's 'these go to 11' kind of way. As for the 5 neck guitar that was actually Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick who played that particular monster. And I've seen him play it too. The bottom two necks are totally unplayable if he's wearing it on a strap and standing upright. Man what a show!

I adore TGS and find it very funny, without fail. Stupid humor? Yes, that's part of the appeal. Completely random and surreal? Yeah, I think that's part of why it's fun, too.

If the humor's not sophisticated enough for you, there's plenty of other places on teh Internets to find teh funny.

I agree with mekkab. If it's not funny to you, you might just not be wired to laugh at it. I find it relaxing because of how dumb and random it is. Maybe you don't. Whatev.

F'rinstance, I don't follow sports, so I don't click in sports threads on Fark. Watching sports is boring to me and I find the entire industry to be mildly ridiculous. Do I post about how dumb it is? Nah. Takes a lot of energy to actively hate something--decrying the dumbness of these flash toons is really a colossal waste of time and effort.

A scientific expedition disembarks from its plane at the final outpost of civilization in the deepest Amazon rain forest. They immediately notice the ceaseless thrumming of native drums. As they venture further into the bush, the drums never stop, day or night, for weeks.

The lead scientist asks one of the natives about this, and the native's only reply is "Drums good. Drums never stop. Very BAD if drums stop."

The drumming continues, night and day, until one night, six weeks into the trip, when the jungle is suddenly silent. Immediately the natives run screaming from their huts, covering their ears. The scientists grab one boy and demand "What is it? The drums have stopped!"

The terror-stricken youth replies "Yes! Drums stop! VERY BAD!"

The scientists ask "Why? Why? What will happen?"

Wild-eyed, the boy responds,

" . . . BASS SOLO!!!" -

I know a college girl who likes TGS so much (she and her suitemates all have TGS identities; I pity whoever has to be "the ugly one") that she wants to get a white dress with narrow, pale blue, widely-spaced, horizontal pin stripes, to be her TGS outfit. That way she'll look like she was drawn on notebook paper.

Unless the third neck is in a really odd or open tuning that the song calls for. But I doubt that's why Vai uses it.

In fact that IS why he uses it (at least in concert... obviously he only used it in those David Lee Roth videos to show off).

He switches between playing the two right-handed necks, each of which is set up with a different tone. The left-handed neck has a third tone and is tuned to an open chord, which gets strummed intermittently for texture.

I gotta agree with Mofo_Jones on this one. You posted it way to late in the thread to be able to call it a pre-emptive strike. There were at least 4 hater posts before you did it.

You know, dr_worm_md, I see you in every one of these Homestar threads copying and pasting the exact same post. Every single time! You don't even take the time to alter the post if you're OBVIOUSLY coming into the thread late. Sure, it's a little more effort than just pasting, but don't you want to at least make sense?

I've expressed my anger at what you do in these threads before, but it never seems to help. Do you ever post in other threads? And if so do you just copy and paste the same posts in there as well?

Have something to say, man. Don't just put crap up in here that probably doesn't even mean shiat to you anymore. You've posted that post about 20 times. Joke's over, and to be honest, it was never funny.

The 12-string has a different sound, since every note you play is actually two notes.

...At least for the G,D,A & E strings. The high-e and B strings are identical.

Another use for a multi-neck guitar is if you change the tuning of the guitar mid-song. The multiple necks allow for the different tunings. But the odds of a person playing rock being a good enough musician to not only use an alternate tuning much less multiple alternate tunings are about 150 Billion to 1. Jimmy Page is the only one I can think of, and of course he can afford to have Gibson custome build him a Les Paul with motors and switches and a computer that will automatically adjust the guitar to the tuning needed (Which he did in the mid-90's and used on "Kashmir" during their "Page&Plant: Unledded" years).

You know, dr_worm_md....

hook, line, and sinker. it's flamebait, don't you see? this is the first HSR thread i've actually read, and just by the replies to dr_worm_md, it's fairly obvious that he posts to get a reaction, and apparently he gets it every time. i seriously doubt he's going to change anyone's mind by trolling. just like you're not going to change his mind by responding.

everyone tells dr_worm_md not to click on the HSR link if he doesn't like it, well, don't let his posts get to you if YOU don't like what he has to paste.. er, say.

God I love TSG. Something about how surreal it is gets me every time.

I don't think Page actually commissioned that guitar. They are made by a 3rd party company. I remember seeing the company's website awhile back. Page also used the guitar in the late 90's when touring with the Black Crowes.

This is much funnier than the worn-out, dreary Simpsons. It's funny because it's Strong Bad's idea of an exciting cartoon show -- he even does the voices.

Best TGS ever. Still doesn't hold a candle to the rest of H*R.

And I hate to admit it, but I didn't get the "breadtangle" joke until I saw the easter egg with various pizza shapes.

dr_worm_md

It's funny that I only see you in the H*R threads. Always negative too. Do you watch them hoping to find something sophisticated and then cry cause it's never there? What's the definition of insanity?

Go read the New Yorker or something and leave us simpletons alone.

You're right, it's flame bait. dr_worm_md posts without even thinking about it trying to piss off Homestar haters.

The only problem is that he and I both really love H*R. (I assume he does) Go take a look at his post. He's posting against the people who trash H*R. I don't care much for those people either, and I definitely don't think they have any taste, but his way of dealing with it just pisses me off. He's lazy and mechanical. Wake me for his funeral.

"This is the guitar I want."

I always wanted one of Nigel's amplifier capos, which changed the pitch of the guitar by squeezing the speaker cone. Or at least one of his folding wine glasses.

It's indicative of the haters that they can sit through an animation with a joke count of around 40, and then come in and ask what the joke was.

Homestar Runner haters ,...,

used to love Homestar runner. Then they showed HSR to the non-fark friends in their triangle of friends and their friends didn't get it. So they get on here and ask US why it's funny so they explain it to their friends a week later. HSR is the next Disney and if these haters can't appreciate it, then let them eat cake -- sweet cuppin' cakes

When my family/friends get together, we load up any Homestar one of us may have missed. After that, our sides are sore for a while. Great stuff.

This was awesome and goes great with my *No One expects the Spanish Inquisition* sense of humor. You either get it and love it, or you hate it because you just can't understand why people are amused by what you don't find funny. Or you think it's just OK.

A great TGS to start with, but it's even better when you're on hardcore muscle-relaxants. I think I need to tweak my neck out and watch everything in the Homestarchives more often.

Pausing a TGS toon? You should use a bookmarklet. They're pieces of fairly complex javascript code that do some really cool things, like pausing Flash as it happens. Here's a link to one page featuring some of them. I use the one called "Seek Bar for IE", which I know for a fact works on Homestar Runner toons. Go ahead and try the others. When you're done getting that working, browse the rest of the site for some more good stuff, as well as another great site, Bookmarklets.com.

2005-01-18 04:21:38 AM
Pausing it is easy if you are watching it using Flash Player. I can't stand watching them in my browser.

Fullscreen > Tiny Little Window.
