OOOOH! I saw this one! It was when Geordi and the Romulan were trapped on the planet surface, and Wesley sent them a beacon so they could signal the ship and beam back up! This is the same thing, right?

(end geek mode)

2002-03-07 06:42:59 PM
Maybe it's that alien the Australian SETI group found!

2002-03-07 06:45:38 PM
It's my pager. I knew I left it somewhere.

2002-03-07 06:45:52 PM
that is freaky....cool, but freaky

2002-03-07 06:46:59 PM
Hey! They found the Monolith from 2001!

2002-03-07 06:47:08 PM
How long before Dubya bombs it?

2002-03-07 06:47:35 PM
is it just me or does this sound like a really big publicity stunt for the E.T. rerelease?

2002-03-07 06:47:49 PM
dit..dit..dah.. dah... It's Xenu calling L. Ron, are you there Ron?

2002-03-07 06:48:13 PM
Me wondered where big black rock with sharp edges went, me got tired one day and stopped dancing around rock. Woke up, rock was gone, me blamed fellow tribesmen, me sorry guys.

"How long before Dubya bombs it?"

When it flashes 666 times and he calls it evil.

2002-03-07 06:50:00 PM
Mmmm..... "pulsating auroral X-ray hot spot"

2002-03-07 06:51:11 PM
It's some wacky Jupiter kinda Old Faithful thing. It's just some thing spewing out shiat.
Or it's alien warlords trying to pinpoint Earth with thier giant lazer sight!

2002-03-07 06:51:35 PM
It's not unusual. Whenever solar wind picks up most of the planets with magnetic fields start emitting pulses of EM radiation near the poles.

2002-03-07 06:54:35 PM
"Chandra X-ray Observatory"

I knew it, CONSPIRACY, Condit is involved. He's pissed cause he lost yesterday...

2002-03-07 06:55:21 PM
I'm afraid I can't do that Dave.

2002-03-07 06:55:34 PM
Elvis.

2002-03-07 06:56:21 PM
Also spotted: pulsing beacon on (Dubya's) Uranus...

2002-03-07 06:57:39 PM
i need to watch 2001 again. just for the music at the beginning. And no, its not the monolith, its a jawa. Nuff said.

"While the researchers were using Chandra to observe Jupiter, two NASA spacecraft"

So thats where she went...

2002-03-07 07:04:32 PM
Dr Chandra was also the guy who built HAL, if you remember...

ooOOOOOOeeeeeOOOOOOO!

2002-03-07 07:08:21 PM
In 1968, Rock Hudson walked out of the Los Angeles premiere of "2001",saying "Will someone tell me what the hell this is about?"

A simplistic, unknowing, and brilliant statement.

2002-03-07 07:27:49 PM
More fuel for the tinfoil hat crowd. I think it's really just ricochets of Barbara Streisand concert warble-screams careening around the solar system.

2002-03-07 07:31:09 PM
Max Load
Kubrick did that to people. God rest his soul.

He asked a question ie "should we trust computers implicitly" in 1968 before Microsoft and AOL even existed.

Now that is brilliance.

2002-03-07 07:32:06 PM
That story is just half a misspelling away from being totally crackpot about the whole thing.

Yes, it's happening, but these guys are clearly too stupid ever to understand why.

2002-03-07 07:38:54 PM
It begins!

Bwahahahaha!

...I'll be quiet now.

2002-03-07 07:42:45 PM
2001 was about the evolution of mankind from our current stage to the next. That's why the monolith appeared when we learned how to use tools and later when we learned how to leave the planet. The whole Hal thing was just a sub plot.

2002-03-07 07:45:50 PM
My microwave makes similiar pulses when the burrito is done.

Hmm...maybe we're really were just a giant frozen cosmic burrito. Maybe....

2002-03-07 07:48:38 PM
It's Bob!

2002-03-07 07:51:44 PM
TennesseeBuck, Nuttercut, Max Load (cool name, btw), et al: That's the beauty of Kubrickian films, they're about everything and nothing- he leaves/left it up to the audience to figure it out, rather than hammer you over the head with whatever "point" he was trying to make (unlike other Hollywood productions, like, say, Star Trek). 2001 was about all that and more, and it's up to the viewer to take whatever he wants from the film.

2002-03-07 07:52:36 PM
(damn, forgot to close my bold tags... whoops!
Didn't mean to be so dark there, sorry guys

2002-03-07 07:58:57 PM
this could be verrrrry interesting indeed....

2002-03-07 08:07:22 PM
I always found it interesting in the way HAL spoke with more inflection and emotion than any of the humans did.

2002-03-07 08:27:22 PM
LOL, I guess I'm not the only one who thought of Clarke's work after reading this.

2002-03-07 08:52:18 PM
but can the Chandra X-ray Observatory find it's namesake

2002-03-07 08:53:17 PM
Which is why letting Spielberg handle AI was a bad idea.

2002-03-07 08:56:46 PM
The Chandra observatory was named for the now dead Indian-American Nobel laureate, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. If the X ray observatory is looking for it's namesake, it should be searching the swamps of Georgia.

2002-03-07 09:04:06 PM
Somebody cue "Also Sprach Zarathustra"...

Ladies and gentlemen, we've just lost the picture, but what we have seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has been taken over, "conquered" if you will, by a master race of giant space ants. It is unclear from this vantage point where the ants will eat the captive humans or merely inslave them; one thing is for sure, there is no stopping them, the ants will soon be here.

2002-03-07 09:09:18 PM
I was watching a Star Trek: The Next Generation rerun on TNN tonight. It's obvious this thing on Jupiter is a tachyon pulse. That has to be the most useful invention in the qhole Federation. You can use a tachyon pulse to do just about anything.

Damn, I need to get out more.

2002-03-07 09:20:52 PM
I thought it was just another run-of-the-mill temporal anomaly...

2002-03-07 09:25:19 PM
How long till SETI picks up "All these worlds are yours except Europa. Attempt no landings there. All these worlds are yours except Europa. Attempt no landings there. All these worlds..."

2002-03-07 09:34:55 PM
Cue the creepy Earthbound music!
*doo doo doo deee dooo*

2002-03-07 09:55:21 PM
The truth is out there

2002-03-07 10:00:09 PM
This sounds like a job for Zapp!!!!

Ahhh...the sweet feel of velour....

2002-03-07 10:04:25 PM
It's actually quite simple to explain, no mystery, no aliens. It's solar radiation being reflected from the Canadian loonie planted in the middle of the ice!

2002-03-07 10:51:49 PM
Bullsit alert.

"Indeed, says Gladstone, Jupiter has "Northern Lights" just as Earth does -- only on a different scale. Jupiter's auroras are hundreds to thousands of times more powerful than our planet's. Furthermore, the glowing rings around Jupiter's magnetic poles are twice the diameter of Earth itself!"

Do ya see it? An exclamation mark.

"And indeed it did. But the new image was a surprise. Chandra revealed that most of the x-rays came from a hot spot located very close to Jupiter's north magnetic pole -- not from the auroral ring itself. Furthermore, it pulsed!"
And another!

Respectable scientific papers simply do not include exlcamation points.

2002-03-07 10:59:02 PM
Uhhh, didn't the first Alien movie start out this way?

2002-03-07 11:17:05 PM
Now if it were coming from MARS, I'd worry... a huge jet of luminous gas, with a green mist trailing behind it...

ALL OF THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA... ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
ALL OF THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA... ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
ALL OF THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA... ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
ALL OF THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS EXCEPT EUROPA... ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE.
...

2002-03-07 11:17:49 PM
It's Chandra Levy!

2002-03-07 11:38:21 PM
