The intuitive Cat:
fact...up to a full 10% of the volume of an aspartame containing soda either self converts (in the can) or isdigested into wood alcohol and formaldehyde.

O.K, let's think abou this one here. First of all, you are SLIGHTLY correct- but only slightly. Yes, components of aspartame are converted into methanol (wood alcohol.) by digestive processes (not "in the can" or anywhere- if the necessary reagents were already in soda, then Aspartame would not be an effective sweetener, since it would react in the can, and methanol does not have a sweet taste. (yes, the beginning substances are sweet, but think of how chemistry works: Hydrogen gas is extremely flammable. Oxygen gas is necessary in an oxidation reaction- combustion is an oxidation reaction. However, a chemical compound containing just those two elements will put out fire- H2O, or water. Enough chemistry)
If 10% of the soda became methanol, then anyone who ever drank more than a few sips would be dead. Anyone who ever drank a sip or two would have gotten very sick. look at it this way: a 32-oz. cup of diet soda, by your logic, would contain 3.2 ounces of methanol, which is more than enough to kill you or at least cause blindness.
Aspartame is a combination of 2 amino acids- present in all living things- phenyketonuric acid(phenylalanine) and aspartic acid. It's the phenylalanine that becomes methanol. And, as the article states, cooked chicken contains up to 1,000 times the amount of it than a diet soda. This is NOT my only source- I know someone w/ phenylketonuria, and trust me, his life is very difficult, as there are so many foods he has to avoid. By your logic, eating 1/2 a McNugget would make you blind and the entire thing would kill you.
I'm not being paid by the soda makers or Equal. As the brother of a doctor, I am simply VERY irritated by people who start foolish health rumors on the 'net, because many of these rumors cause people to stop or start doing things that can actually have very real and dangerous effects on the health. (I know you didn't start this one, you're just an example of one of the people who has been tricked by it) Another example of this kind of "false" science(started well before the web existed, but now very popular as a joke on the web) was a fake study that a group published in order to show the dangers of people making claims about products. a summary:
There is a chemical called Dihydrogen Monoxide which is seriously believed to have very serious health effects, and should be banned immediately. Here is a list of problems with Dihydrogen Monoxide:
1. It is found in cancerous tumors
2. It is a component of many hazardous chemical solutions used in industry
3. inhalation of a relatively small amount will cause death within 5 minutes
4. many people are injured each year as a direct result of contact with this substance.
The group presented these and other "problems" to many people, and unless they had a chemistry or other scientific background, they immediately said that yes, it should be banned or seriously regulated. A congressman who was shown the "study" soon went to work on drafting a bill to halt use of it until more work was done. In the end, the group finally let people know that "Dihydrogen Monoxide" is the chemical name for water.
The problem with people is that not everyone is a scientist, and many don't understand science at all, and will believe anything that a person with an appearance of scientific knowledge tells them.

Yea, yea - Coke had cocaine in it at one point, but if I remember correctly, it was such a tiny amount, that it would have no effect on you at all. You would have had to drink a hundred or something like that and then we get back to the whole insulin coma thing.

Personally I think sugar is one of the worst things we put in our bodies, but then again, I'm an Atkins-head so go figure.

Bah, I miss out on all these tasty diet foods.

I had a bad reaction to aspartame a few times... kinda like what people get if they are allergic to MSG. Still, when some burger flipper serves me a diet coke instead of coke, I'm not a happy person, because i've already drank the stuff before my face turns numb :P

But that's me. Otherwise, it's safe as far as we know.

Greek: I liked the version on Snopes even better...

Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide!

Slightly bitter? Its one of the most bitter substances known.
2002-03-07 01:57:51 PM
SLAYERSWINE. What the hell do you know about addiction and substance abuse!!

Soda without caffeine is not soda. So nyah.

Dissolving a caffiene pill in water woudln't give you a definitive taste of caffiene. There is only 200mg of caffine per pill (Trust me...I've got my trusty bottle right here...good replacement for meth!!) Each pill weighs more than 200mg...can't say how much exactly because i dont' have a scale...but yeah. alot more. so you have the added taste of other shiat in there. but i do believe caffine has a bitter taste. Now...time for more caffeine!

Interesting fact:
Look up "caffeine" at
The entymology is from the German/French word for coffee...I suspected as much.

Hmmm...these fries are pretty bland. Could you please pass the caffeine shaker?

You are a font of misinformation. Take the truth and twist it slightly, it becomes a lie.

"Aspartame is a combination of 2 amino acids- present in all living things- phenyketonuric acid(phenylalanine) and aspartic acid. It's the phenylalanine that becomes methanol."

Liar. Phenylalanine does NOT become methanol. The methanol is what the two amino acids are bonded with to make aspartame. And while chicken does contain thousands of times as much of the two aminos, it does not release methane into the system as aspartame does.

Is having a brother who is a doctor supposed to make you some kind of authority? Big deal-- my DOCTOR is a doctor. Also, I know how to look things up and read about them. You should give it a try.

What the hell is so unlikely about this?

Just try the caffeine-free versions of a soda, and tell me that they taste just the same.

[image from too old to be available] Addiction isn't the only reason that Coca-cola and other companies add caffiene to soft-drinks. Caffeine is also a diuretic (i.e. it slows your body's ability to absorb water, thereby making you piss more). So once you drink your Coke, you're still thirsty. "Hmmm... what will I drink now? Well how about another Coke?" :-)

More Coke consumption = more sales = more $$$

They didn't widen the mouths on Coke cans for fun, they did it so you consume more in one gulp. So once you're done, you'll say: "Gee that was fast. I must have been really thirsty. I should go have another!" Same reason, more $$$.

Human consumption of caffeine goes back nearly 3000 years, reportedly to an incident involving the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. As water was being boiled for drinking, leaves from a nearby tea bush accidently fell into the pot. The delightful aroma led the emperor to try a taste.

My husband just suggested that I get professional help to get over my caffeine addiction (sodas only). I quit every 6 months or so, generally after feeling sick to my stomach for 2 weeks. I go through 4 days of withdrawl headaches, naseau and fatigue and then I'm fine physically but the craving is still there and I'm back to drinking again in less than a month. Man I'm glad I've never tried cigarettes or any other drug. I think I'd be dead now.

Hahaha CAFFENINE AFFICTION? Oh my god thats so farking funny. What a little priss

Although Greek's science was off, his point is still well taken. Methanol exists naturally in many foods, and often in larger amounts than one would be exposed to by drinking/consuming aspartame. There are NO valid, peer reviewed studies to validate any of the hysterical claims made about aspartame.

And for what it's worth, I AM a doctor, though to some that just makes me part of the conspiracy. Whatever.

One more thing, methane is NOT the same thing as methanol. Look it up.

It is. It has a slightly bitter flavor.

That's what my wife says.

Everything is a flavor. Pain is a flavor. "Dave's Insanity Sauce" has loads of it. Mmmmm... mexican food with a side of pain...
