nice headline.

i like that last quote from carlson. can you imagine hannity saying something like that? i always thought there was something behind his slimey opinion-loaded questions, and am consistently disappointed when it would be a repeat of whatever white house soundbyte he found. he actually seems intelligent...well, besides the bow tie phenom

/liberal

Stewart in '08

2005-01-09 01:54:15 PM
The bow tie is an affectation, a schtick. If he weren't a pundit, he wouldn't wear it. The only reason he has it is to get attention.

Stewart for Prez!!

I would quit my job and work the campaign for free.
As long as he promises not to hoot!!

/and he MUST keep the smirk!

2005-01-09 01:56:01 PM
"When my opinions diverged from those of the White House it was difficult" to conduct the expected debate, "particularly when I opposed the Iraq war," he said.

Wow, that about says it all, doesn't it? Partisan rivalry trumps sensible policy discussions.

TV News is not news anymore.

Paddy Chayefsky was a prophet.

So, will Tucker be as big a dick in the unemployment line or at the soup kitchen?
Stewart/McCain 2008

2005-01-09 01:57:24 PM
So Tucker knows he's a partisan hack. Interesting.

See, my problem with the show was that it wasn't conservatives VS liberals, it was rebuplicans VS democrats. So the conservatives could never criticize the republicans, and vice versa. Meaning nobody would ever hold politicians responsible, since politicians don't care what people at the other end of the political spectrum think.

What we need is a show where the liberals grill the democrats, and the conservatives are equally rough on the republicans.

2005-01-09 01:57:39 PM
Stewart/McCain? McCain's a sell-out. He used to be cool, but he's been biatch-slapped down too many times.

/I'd still vote that ticket

2005-01-09 01:58:33 PM
"I think he made a good point about the noise level of these types of shows, which does nothing to illuminate the issues of the day," Klein said. Viewers need useful information in a dangerous world, he said, "and a bunch of guys screaming at each other simply doesn't accomplish that."

No farking shiat

2005-01-09 02:00:02 PM
Let us commence the celebration!

But we do have a little bit more work to do than this.

2005-01-09 02:00:13 PM
That had to be the funnest thing I ever saw. They expected him to be funny, but instead he ripped into them, and they just sat there. They didn't know what to respond with, and basically looked shell shocked, looking like they just wanted it to end.

2005-01-09 02:00:41 PM
The article spins it as tho CNN decided to cancel 'Crossfire' after Tucker left.. But numerous stories a couple of days ago stated that CNN fired Tucker & cancelled the show at the same time.

Here's a few about Tucker getting bounced.. Apologies for the cut n paste:

He's not saying it was difficult to diverge from White House opinion, he's saying that the format of the show didn't work if he didn't take the expected diametrically opposed position to Begala. (Who, people seem to have missed, was ripped by Stewart as well.)

Good riddance to this show, and any show like it. Hopefully they're a dying breed. I don't care if the viewers watch more when they scream at each other, this is supposed to be news. Crossfire and its ilk are little more than Fark on teebee. It's not difficult to find intelligent and reasoned people on both sides of the aisle to rationally discuss topics and differences in ideology.

2005-01-09 02:02:23 PM
"When my opinions diverged from those of the White House it was difficult" to conduct the expected debate, "particularly when I opposed the Iraq war," he said.

So, basically, it was his job to be a right wing shill.

I know that's not news, but considering the shiat he gave Stewart...and the shiat people who were on Carlson's ("official") side...

He was arguing for things he didn't believe in, but when Stewart points out that all Crossfire does is fan the flames...Stewart is the jerk??!?! When Carlson tacitly admits it was their job to make sure an argument kept going, no matter what people may feel is right or wrong...

I don't agree with his politics, but at least Stewart isn't a professional butt boy.

2005-01-09 02:03:48 PM
Stewart should've Kilborne on the Late Late Show. That Craig Ferguson guy isn't that funny, and half the time I don't understand his accent.

/Watches Trainspotting with the subtitles on

2005-01-09 02:04:45 PM
JOhn McCain

bucks his party, hes COOL!

Zell Miller

bucks his party, hes a TRAITOR!!!

....... right??

2005-01-09 02:05:08 PM
err, that should say "Stewart should've replaced Kilborne"

2005-01-09 02:06:16 PM
So, erm, people are cheering the loss of a show because it was fully of screaming, opinionated, intolerant twits with no intention of having a reasonable debate much less coming to agreement on anything...

Fark's plug is pulled in 4...3...2...

That's a totally misleading comparison. When did John McCain give a speech at the DNC full of righteous venom directed at his own party? When has McCain publicly opposed Bush on any major policy initiative like the War in Iraq? McCain is an independent on some things, but he's not a tool like Zell Miller.

2005-01-09 02:22:02 PM
Now, when does MSNBC get canceled?

2005-01-09 02:23:11 PM
Stop hurting America.

2005-01-09 02:24:11 PM
Wow, because this is fark I never expected the headline to accurately represent the article. The prez of cnn US actually came out and agreed with Stuart? incredible.

2005-01-09 02:26:11 PM
Why do they keep reporting that Crossfire is cancelled? No real news source is reporting this, but I keep seeing it repeated.

2005-01-09 02:27:23 PM
These shows where people hold rigid positions based on partisanship while screeching at each other are annoying. I simply don't watch and will not miss it. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a trend to return to rational discussion. Hopelessly, there will probably be some 'reality' based replacement.

2005-01-09 02:28:32 PM
Stewart went from being a good comedian to a grandstanding loser.

2005-01-09 02:28:45 PM
Let's see... AP, The New York Times, and Bloomberg have all reported that Crossfire is cancelled. That seems like real news sources to me.

2005-01-09 02:29:54 PM
Habraham,

Good answer. Saved me some typing. McCain follows his beliefs, Miller listens to orders.

Regarding the subject article, good for CNN. Im glad to see they are heading in the right direction, as long as they don't cancel Lou Dobbs. That guy is the man.

2005-01-09 02:30:12 PM

That would be CSPAN. Shame more people don't watch it...

Does this mean all the news channel will eliminate the partisan shouting match segments from their 24 hour rotation?

Dude, I so called this outcome back when that happened.
tags for Tucker and Jon.

At least Crossfire was forthright in its oxymoronic premise of partisan even-handedness through fruitless stalemate. The real problem is with the programmers and editors who at their best construct bland, even-handed stories that sacrifice meaningful truth for the appearance of objectivity, and at their worst gorge themselves on Scott Peterson and Michael Jackson binges.

2005-01-09 02:38:48 PM
Score one John.

2005-01-09 02:39:06 PM
One can only hope Hannity & Colmes, The O'Reilly Factor, and Scarborough Country go the same way...

Applause to Tucker Carlson though, for the last quote, showing that he actually does think independently of the Republican Party.

I also think I'm one of the few that actually liked Crossfire. It certainly wasn't real "news" but then again at least it was relatively bipartisan, which is something that is lacking from many political debates on television these days.

2005-01-09 02:39:57 PM
I don't believe "spelt" is a proper word usement.

re: 'Tucker knows he's a partisan hack. Interesting.'

Yep. No one with an IQ above plant life could actually believe the bullshiate he spews, not even Tucker himself.
The target demo for Crossfire is people with the minds of children.
Stewart gets this. That's why he has children read transcripts from their idiotic show.
It's the political equivalent of Jerry Springer for the dullwitted masses.

Agreed, Stewart may not be the most qualified person to profess this opinion, however its been 4 freakin years, who else has stood up and mentionned the 400lb gorilla in the room? Grandstanding.. hmm.. Do you think he is gaining fans with this risky stance?

Frankly, its very sad that comedians and satirists are the only ones speaking the truth nowadays. News is so knee jerk nowadays that being a reporter on CNN only requires the ability to read cue cards and react. The days of Woodward and Bernstein appear long dead.

Ass+Head = Pull.
It will hurt at first, but it will pay off in the long run.

Jon Stewart was cooler when he was funny. Now he's just another left-wing idiot on TV.
