Wired's list just isn't the same with Duke Nukem Forever as number one.

Yeah, whatever happened to Windows SE (Stable Edition)?

2005-01-08 10:20:17 AM
Not to nitpick, but half the products are made by hardware companies. Maybe the headline could be readjusted. That, and I didm't think hardware could qualify as vaporware. If so, does that mean when I lose my homework I can call it vaporware?

2005-01-08 10:20:20 AM
Duke sucks!

2005-01-08 10:22:45 AM
At least with(out) Duke Nukem we have something to look forward to. Growing up I always used to hear that flat screen T.V.s and a pill to grow hair were "just a few years away." Now we have flat (thin) screen television, a lotion to grow hair, and pills for male sex performance.
What a brave new world we live in.

/Votes to close the patent office because everything is now invented.

HaywoodJablonski: I didm't think hardware could qualify as vaporware.

vaporware: /vayprweir/, n.

Products announced far in advance of any release (which may or may not actually take place)

(From the Jargon File, which is kinda definitive for these things.)

I'll settle for a version of Windows that doesn't suck.

Duke Nukem is gonna suck
does anyone even care?

2005-01-08 10:29:15 AM
Now I may be wrong, BUT, I saw the phantom on tv being demoed at CES. I realize that just because it's being demoed doesn't mean it'll be out to us any time soon, but nothing else on the list even exists in a prototype form to show the public. So does that mean that the Phantom is now just disappointing?

2005-01-08 10:30:02 AM
I was sad to find out the keyboard with a lotion and kleenex dispenser was vaporware.

You actually think it's gonna be released!? I have a magazine reviewing the blade runner game that was released in 1998. under a screenshot of a futuristic advertisement is a caption reading "Duke Nukem Forever - coming any day now." seven years ago it was a freaking joke. Now it's more of an embarrasment.

See, this is why I use ancient technology. Nothing like a Pentium 133 on 56k, that's what I say! Who cares if the newest products come out or not if I can't and won't be using any of them.

Duke Nukem forever is not real, nor has it ever been. I stopped believing the lies years ago. For some reason this company, 3drealms, feels like this joke is funny. Maybe it IS funny that thousands of gamers continue to hope for it.

I'm a little disappointed that www.go-l.com and their "products" didn't make the list. I first found out about this website from The Screensavers (pre-G4 makeover). They have some absolutely incredible computers and displays, and they just sound too good to be true.

And as far as I know, no one has conducted a review on anything this site offers.

So it has to be vaporware at best, a scam at worst.

The best way to wrap your brain around the duke nukem fiasco is this...

Duke nukem forever's original release date was before halflife 1 ever came out.

Think about how long ago that was...

2005-01-08 10:56:03 AM
I have a 1997 or 1998 PCGamer (are they still in business) with Duke Nukem on the cover, with the headline: "HOT FOR THIS CHRISTMAS: DUKE NUKEM FOREVER".

Feh. 3dRealms has a SERIOUS rude awakening for them when they finally release the game and people don't buy it purely out of spite. Yes, gamers are that petty.

2005-01-08 11:07:46 AM
How the heck can 3D Realms still be around even when they haven't released a product in years and years?

As for Duke Nukem...it's already a joke, and also irrelevant. There's no way any product, be it a game, OS, car, or anything else can live up to 7 years of hype and expectation.

If anything, when it is released, it'll be remembered for years afterward only for its former vaporware status, even if its a better game than, say Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 combined. Which I highly doubt it'll come even close to.

2005-01-08 11:08:43 AM
After this long, it is pretty obvious that they are not going forward with the release period.

Many thing delay the release of new titles. Licensor contractual issues, developers being lazy asses (they all are), creative problems (box design, manual design, etc).

Mostly, it all ties to the royalty rate guaranteed the developers. If the financials don't work with that rate, and the rest of the physical COGS cannot be reduced, you've got yourself a problem. The solution is to kill the project.

2005-01-08 11:09:47 AM
At last - AmigaOS4 isn't on the list any more... They've obviously realised that it's almost finished, and since it's available in beta form it isn't vapourware. Hurrah!

Wired - you suck :-)

2005-01-08 11:09:55 AM
Monkeyfro, how the fark did your date stamp say 2005-01-08 10:11:54 PM??? And it appeared only a moment after my last one.

Monkeyfro put words that trigger a time filter, kicking his post 12 hours into the future.
RE: Vaporware, yeah, I'm looking forward to the children of 3drealms' developers completing the game.

Does anyone know an actual release date for Gran Turismo 4? I look at Target, Amazon, CDNOW, Best Buy, and they all have different release dates. I'm so confused about when this freakin' game that I've been waiting forever for is going to come out.

Voice recognition should have been here by now. Didn't IBM drop half a billion into it or something a while ago? vartian,
THC vaporizes at about 350 degrees. when you smoke pot the thc next to the flame is vaporized and released into the air.
burning or oxidizing thc breaks it down into other chemicals. that do not have the same effect.

what bothers me about vaproizers , is when your done smoking , you still have green weed that looks like you can still smoke it. i feel bad throwing it out

Half that list was frickin gaming or gaming related. What I want to know about are the products that are promised that would actually change something that matters, like when the hell will Verizon get DSL to my area of the state!!!!!!

This site amazes me. Is it the same people wishing the death of handicapped kids in stairwells who are anxiously awaiting the release of a farking game called DukeNukem? I can't think of any bigger waste to the gene pool than people who look forward to a Duke Nukem release.

Flying cars would suck... especially here in Florida... with all the old people... and farmers markets...

2005-01-08 12:03:24 PM
Looks like MonkeyFro got caught trying to be the Weeners. He keeps moving down the list!

Anyway, I have to agree with the Duke Nukem...it's mid 90s vaporware that likely will never see the light of day. If it does, it will likely die a slow agonizing death in the $9.99 and less bin.

2005-01-08 12:05:49 PM

NiteClerk: there is a pill for hair loss now.

I think part of the problem with DNF is that 3d realms keeps starting over with every new engine that gets to the market. Im still not sure whats kept them alive this long. Duke is way old, and the handheld version isnt so new either. I think what they need to do is look at what happened with Daikatana. That bit of vaporware was hyped and almost immediately relegated to the bargain bin.

2005-01-08 01:21:01 PM
They can have Duke. I am waiting for the new Shadow Warrior to come out! Wooohooo!

JackMoore: So does that mean that the Phantom is now just disappointing?

The Phantom is actually a huge scam.

HardOCP recently had a lawsuit levied against them for exposing that the CEO and board are nothing but family members, and the CEO has already driven several companies into the ground.

1. Get a couple investors in a fury over video games on demand
2. Use and flavor of XP and take off the shelf games.
3. Mold a case and put the games on the HD with generic components.
4. Market like crazy.
5. Collect your CEO salary while all employees are not being paid in lue of stock.
6. Crash the compnay claiming you never got the funding you needed.
7. Walk away with a mil or two.

Really, how hard would it be to build a custom case and put generic components in it? Display some games at CES and wait for investors to pour in.

Microsoft's successor to Windows XP was originally promised to ship in 2004, though the company subsequently pushed the launch date to 3015 or something. Obviously, Microsoft won't be able to finish the code until it's had a peek at Apple's forthcoming Tiger.

pwned.

A kid in high school obsessed with Duke could have graduated, gone through college, gotten a few years of industry experience, and then actually started WORKING on his "dream game" by now. When are they just gonna give up?

2005-01-08 03:54:33 PM
3DRealms has been making spinoff Duke games for consoles such as PS1 and GBA, and even a PC game that resembles the original games with sidescrolling action. They all suck, but I'm sure someone buys them.

5. ATI's Radeon X800 series of video cards

My computer must be part vaporware, as when I put it together about two months ago I put in a Radeon X800. It wasn't cheap, but it looks and performs awesome.

2005-01-08 04:27:35 PM
if you're a programmer and they send you to hell they make you write vaporware

I don't think vaporware is neccessarily a product announced that never comes out. It can also be a product that is never intended to be completed, for whatever reason.

Like I waited forever for Wizardry III -- like years d00d! But it was awesome when it finally came out, I guess my point is there is vaporware and there is heckuv-late-ware.

2005-01-08 04:47:39 PM
Say what you will, but IF the Duke ever comes back, I'll be there. I was sold the moment he actually ripped the head off that alien and shat down it's neck. Comedy gold.

2005-01-08 05:01:58 PM
I'm not a fan of Duke Nukem, and I have no intention of playing DNF if it does ever materialize. I think it would be smart of the people to not have a website up with constant updates about non-existent software. It would also be smart if they would just develope their own game engine instead of adopting and then discarding others. They've already been through Quake II and Unreal's engines. I don't know what they claim to be using now, but I'm sure it is pointless to even mention it

2005-01-08 05:04:38 PM

Every copy of Fable ever made should be thrown into a pit and set fire to. The company should be dismantled and those in charge of the game should be put against the wall and silenced so as never to leak information as to what the game really was. That way we can go back to waiting for it and listening to the amazing hype.

I didn't hear about the game until a few days before I bought it, didn't hear much hype more than "It'll be open ended and really long" and it still didn't live up to the hype.

DN:F WILL be out. Just waiting for market to slow down from hype of al the diferent games the past year. Its completed. Ive seen it, ive played it. 3D Realms stays in business because of the MILLIONS it made from selling movie rights to a major studio. I know im gonna get flamed for this but i dont give a damn. 3D Realms has been great to my family. Also, DN:F will be out, VERY soon

TiVo announced the service at CES in January 2004, and released it Jan. 3, 2005. That was cutting it very close, TiVo! And the product still doesn't support the Mac or DVD burning!

Yes, my Uncle is Scott Miller since you obviously know who George is. You dont think George was trying to mess with peoples heads in the forums?? I know they are still implementing things and changing ideas, but about 3 or so months ago( time has flown by since ive got a son now, jot for sure)there was a finished product out, it was nice, but my uncle and george DO keep scrapping the date and trying to make the best game possible. I understand people being pissed about no DN:F for so long now. Hell, Im still waiting for my damned APOGEE sweater from my uncle. LOL So trust me, i understand ur frustration, how dop yopu think i feel, i get copies of al the games 3 mos or so before the stores do. I still like playing Rise of the Triad best though

Here I am on fark, reading a thread that involves Duke Nukem, and after all this time not a single soul has made the obvious comment? Well, it's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it, so here goes: Duke Sucks.

/Don't blame the messenger.

but nothing else on the list even exists in a prototype form to show the public

I think that is funny...

PearPC the actual software in that article does exist it's an open source Mac Emu which can run 10.3/.4 for us who were lucky to get the Developers DVD. I guess that guy is going to have fun eating his left nut.

As far as the actual CherryOS it doesn't exist. In fact we have already taken it up against Maui-X about the software. There is a line of code that labels Hard Drive image the term "a Shrubbery" in it in German because the main developer is German and he couldn't think of anything except the Monty Python movie when was writing the code. This code also exist in "CherryOS".

CherryOS will never exist seperate of a reskinned PearPC if at all. For more information PearPC is HERE

Voice recognition? My car 'understands' more than 600 terms, i can control the radio, cd player, navigation system, climate control, etc, all by voice.. it hasn't screwed up on me yet, even when i was having a real bad cold.

FarkmeBlind

I am busted. Will never, ever trust the "Find on this page" function again. I swear I looked for Duke sucks, and found no hits.

Make that, "Explorer Sucks."

But everyone knows that already.

Yay, an article quoting a bunch of internets who have done shiatall in the way of software development.

"This is taking way too long! I want X now!"

"Hehe, maybe Longhorn should be called Long wait. Hehehe."

"Stupid Micro$oft (teehee)! I don't know anything at all about what they're doing but I am justified in my indignance that they aren't doing it as fast as I want!"

You missed the point. This isn't about things taking a long time to be finished, it's about things that were PROMISED but were never delivered, and don't even come close to be.

Eh, you're right. I just wanted to make fun of the terrible jokes they were trying to make.
