Sadly, this is a major problem in China. I remember similar cases arising when I lived there, and since we were taking care of a baby at the time we made sure to buy only recognized brands from reputable stores.

A lot of the problems arise from the fact that most "stores" tend to be a window to someone's home that's just opened up and stocked with basic necessities on shelves. You have no idea who you are buying from, and they often sell both prepared food and raw ingredients, even live animals.

My original headline was, "Chinese man jailed for making formula so low in nutritional value that babies starved to death after eating it. Everyone knows only adult Chinese food is supposed to do that."

But if that's what it takes to make the main page, so be it.

You don't have to go to China for that, that sounds like a bodega anywhere in New York City.

True, but there it's mostly poor people buying, and even legit packaging tends to be shoddy and cheap stuff to begin with, and on top of all that there is little regulation going on.

I once bought a fake pack of cigarettes that was incredibly lifelike, it just had minor errors in the printing on the package. When I opened the pack it smelled weird, and when I lit one it tasted like crap.

There are people on every corner selling cigarettes in China, you can sometimes get them relatively cheap from old people dragging wooden carts full of cartons around. And like every other product, sometimes it's fake.

/almost never bought anything fake, though, if you've got money to shop in the right places that just doesn't happen

Right ON! Why is it that the women who seem least likely to be able to afford formula are the very ones not using the brains and boobies evolution gave them to care for their babies?

/plus, breastfeeding makes for bigger busoms
//husband and father of happy, breastfed baby
///not a shot at people who have medical problems that prevent nursing

/er... "bosoms"

And, to prove that breastfeeding makes the Baby Jebus happy, here is a great work of religious art:

Ehm, guys, most women do try their best to breastfeed, many simply can't produce nearly enough milk. My mother couldn't produce any at all. Without formula I would have subsisted on unenriched cows milk and suffered much malnutrition and other badness, same for my sister.

Being a third world country, they have never been able to afford anything even resembling "big government", the country is too big and poor to regulate effectively on their limited budget.

But, like you said, things are changing. Ironically I think with the fall of Communism they are likely to increase regulation of goods, or at least start regulating more effectively.

Ever occur to you that mom herself is getting insufficient nourishment to breastfeed a child?

That is false. Most women will produce more than enough milk; they just give up after a few days. They think that a) they need to produce gushing amounts of thick milk to nourish their children. Human breastmilk is thin and pale in consistancy and blueish in color. For the first few days, not all the much is produced, but the baby doesn't need that much. The more baby nurses, the more milk is produced.

Bigger breasts do not produce more milk; small breasts will produce plenty of milk.

I'm sure YOUR mom did have issues; but most women don't. It is actually very rare for a woman to not be able to breast feed her child. The main reason a woman isn't able to breast feed her child is that she starts supplementing b/c she's afraid her baby is starving the first few days, so she doesn't nurse frequently enough and so she's not stimulated to produce enough milk. A few ounces of breastmilk every few hours is enough the first few days. It is so much more nutritious than formula, a baby needs alot less. Especially at first, when the baby receives colstrum, which has nearly twice the nutrients of regular breastmilk.

Trust me, most women are capable of breast feeding, even AA cups with inverted nipples.

/sorry for the rant, the formula companies have got the public well and truly brainwashed. There is no reason Chinese babies should be dying of malnutrition due to crappy formula. No reason at all. This is disgusting.

Actually, I'm with Tiga here. Most women can produce enough milk. Otherwise, their genes never would have been passed on through the 150,000 years of human evolution prior to formula. Even though there may have been wet nurses for the rich and watered-down cow's milk for the poor, it's too big a reproductive disadvantage to make it this long.

Usually, what you're looking at there is a correctable latching problem. One of the problems with our modern, industrialized world is that women are isolated from each other when it comes to intimate things like childbirth and breastfeeding. In a tribal culture, a woman grows up seeing all the other women doing it all the time, she understands what to do, has less anxiety about it, and get a lot of support if she has trouble.

Today, women receive little or no lactation instruction through example (heaven forbid women should breastfeed in public!) or support, and even time-pressed hospital staff are likely to panic and start supplementing with formula "donated" to them by corporations before the milk even has a chance to fully come in.

If at first you don't succeed, pump while you must, and keep trying. There really is no substitute.

I'm not a conspiracy guy, but I am the father of a breastfed newborn. I've seen what goes on, and I've learned a lot on the subject.

I agree with several of the other posters above.

Formula should be thought of as a last resort, to be used only if the real stuff can't be obtained. The safest milk that newborns can get is distributed under the "Your Momma's Tit" brand name.

2005-01-07 06:39:15 PM
Yeah it's best to breastfeed your baby. Unfortunately lots of third-worlders don't know this and it has lead to an increase in child mortality rates because people are not educated about it.

2005-01-07 06:39:20 PM
Albert Frankenstein, I was thinking the same thing.

If a woman is too malnourished to nurse her own baby, where is she getting the money to buy formula? In some parts of Africa, formula companies would hand out free samples, moms would feed it to their babies, it would run out, and mom would have to keep forking out for formula because her milk had dried up. And if it was powdered formula, mom was probably mixing it with contaminated drinking water.

Adman12 knows what he's talking about (speaking here as a mom between breastfeeding gigs).

Last time I checked, ignorant blob, China had a big government, in fact a totalitarian dictatorship, that apparently cannot manage a simple task like food regulation. Of course, letting babies die on purpose seems like another experiment in population control(or is it exercise?)

A story like this only makes Libertarianism look better, not worse (YAY!)

Hey that happened in the US with Gerber's organic apple juice for babies. Which was neither organic or had apples in it. Just good ol' sugar, water coloring, apple flavoring and water. Gotta love those profits.

For examples of big government in China, look to Tiennamen Sq. and the Falun Gong escapades. They gots some gubmint there.

On the the topic of breast feeding. I salute all of you breast feeding ladies out there. The benefits are too great for the baby to not do it. To all you moms that can't and want to: I'm sorry, you missed out on a huge part of the human female experience. As far as women breast feeding in public: I'll stand up and fight for your right to do so. If and or when I get married and some smarmy restaraunt manager comes up to tell my wife she can't discreetly feed our child, he'll be in for a thrashin'.

in closing... i luvs me some breasts.

Gooch:
What China has is a big population, spread over a lot of territory, and a great number of regional laws and governing/enforcing bodies. It is NOT a totalitarian dicatorship. There are loads of desperately poor, uneducated people trying to make a go of it in business. I'm reminded of the snack shop guy who snuck some kind of household cleaner into his competitor's flour supply (hoping customers would get sick, or think it tasted bad, or something), and then committed suicide out of self-loathing when several of the competitor's customers died. It's tragic, but it's not some kind of pure evil dictator's plot to kill babies. Jeez.

Anyone else wonder why the caregivers didn't notice the kids weren't thriving?

"Swap Children, Eat Well" - ancient Chinese saying.

You don't go to jail for eating foetus soup in China, just for creating skinny children, I guess. You never know, there might be a famine and they may have to resort to cannibalism, the way they always have. I have absolutely zero trust for the Chinese culture, they are, by far, the most evil thing going on the planet. The children who died at the hands of this asshat represent five less Chinese troops we have to face soon.

Let's all just take a few minutes to think about breasts, and see how much we all feel like arguing after that.

Yay socodog! Anyone in a restaurant who can't handle seeing the back of a baby's head and a quarter inch of upper breast flesh (as much as a low-cut shirt shows), or just a blanket tossed discreetly over the whole affair, while mom keeps baby fed and content instead of screaming and disturbing everybody . . . well, that person probably can't handle much of modern life.

China has had big government since their revolution, but it is big government to maintain control, not to better the lives of its citizens. Kinda like what the conservatives want here.

Also... Go Soco! Breastfeeding is completely normal. As red-blooded Americans or otherwise we need to fight this being a social stigma!
