it is kinda eerie that the iranian earthquake happened exactly one year before this one.

black magic? anyone?

2005-01-07 09:45:34 AM
Nah, it happens every December 26th. It's caused by Santa ditching the toys that he didn't get a chance to deliver the night before.

sigh. these theorists tire me. smithers, release the hounds.

Scientific evidence, however, cuts little ice with many conspiracy theorists.

Well, yeah! The scientists are IN on it!

God hates non-christians, that's why President Bush made this happened.

the sad thing is, in some parts of the world all the average folks get is no education at all or just a madrassa religious education.

they will therefore have learned nothing to evaluate these rumors against and will not have the critical thinking skills to challenge the theories that al jazeera and others tell them, and will accept what they are told.

2005-01-07 11:40:24 AM
"There's a lot more to this. Why is the US sending a warship? Why is a senior commander who was in Iraq going there?" whispered designer Mark Tyler, drinking a pint of beer at a bar in Hong Kong's Wan Chai district.

No doubt not his first one of the night.

I have it on good authority that all the jews headed to higher ground several hours before the tsunamis started hitting the shores.

2005-01-07 11:43:07 AM
Remember the guy that predicted Houston would get nuked on Dec 27th? Well, he theorizes that Russian caused the tsunami in order to stop it...

This guy is a real dumbass.

albo

from what i understand on state-run TV in the part of the world that watches Al-Jazeera, they're the "liberal" voices...just because they're mailed UBL audiotapes doesn't mean they're backing his ideology, UBL just knows good PR when he sees it. No doubt you'll respond with some linkage to various damning sources against what I've just said, but at least I've politely invited any counter-criticism. ;-)

Bleh - i'm still reading up on the "German Guy" message board where the "Wolfowitz Syndicate" planned on detonating an atomic weapon in Houston on the 27th of December of 2004.

Thank GOD German Guy helped to avert this disaster!

/doesn't really read it anymore...
//never really believed it

You know, I never undrestood conspiracy theorists. With so much in this world/galaxy/universe waiting to be explained or discovered, why would one devote so much enery to disproving something that is so matter-of-fact (the moon landing, 9-11, etc.).

The other thing that irks me is that while they will pile up mountains of "evidence" that supports their particular theory, they will never supply a motive. Ever. I never understood how someone can form an opinion without wondering about the motivation for the action.

Um, because the USS Abraham Lincoln (a carrier) happens to be in that area anyway (routine deployment), and they have lots of 1) manpower, and 2) helicopters?

No it's not. You ever looked at a map of the world showing all the seismic activity that takes place in just a year, never mind a decade?

http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/general/seismicity/world.html

That Iranian quake was a 6.6, which isn't particularly large as these things go. Quakes of that magnitude are ridiculously common all over the world.

2005-01-07 11:48:19 AM
DavidKirkBeale, i don't understand you point. all i was pointing out was that in that part of the world where the populace is not well-educated, they are open to believing what they are told by authorities, since they don't have the education to evaluate that information critically. and al jazeera and some other muslim media sources and governments do spread rumors about the west. what did i say incorrectly here?

Anybody ever see "Conspiracy Theory" (1997 Mel Gibson movie)?

"A good conspiracy is unprovable. I mean, if you can prove it, it means they screwed up somewhere along the line."

Of course, most people with conspiracy theories won't listen to logical arguments.

Someone told me they thought an underwater nuclear test caused this. I informed them that it was unlikely and sent the the following information (Link just goes to the same info)

http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/pub/louie/class/100/magnitude.html

An earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale has about a thousand times
the power of the most powerful nuclear blast.

Richter TNT for Seismic Example
Magnitude Energy Yield (approximate)

-1.5 6 ounces Breaking a rock on a lab table
1.0 30 pounds Large Blast at a Construction Site
1.5 320 pounds
2.0 1 ton Large Quarry or Mine Blast
2.5 4.6 tons
3.0 29 tons
3.5 73 tons
4.0 1,000 tons Small Nuclear Weapon
4.5 5,100 tons Average Tornado (total energy)
5.0 32,000 tons
5.5 80,000 tons Little Skull Mtn., NV Quake, 1992
6.0 1 million tons Double Spring Flat, NV Quake, 1994
6.5 5 million tons Northridge, CA Quake, 1994
7.0 32 million tons Hyogo-Ken Nanbu, Japan Quake, 1995; Largest
Thermonuclear Weapon
7.5 160 million tons Landers, CA Quake, 1992
8.0 1 billion tons San Francisco, CA Quake, 1906
8.5 5 billion tons Anchorage, AK Quake, 1964
9.0 32 billion tons Chilean Quake, 1960
10.0 1 trillion tons (San-Andreas type fault circling Earth)
12.0 160 trillion tons (Fault Earth in half through center,
OR Earth's daily receipt of solar energy)

I think it might be because they have self image problems. Everyone needs to feel as though they have some sort of purpose or place in life. Most people feel content within their social circle of family, friends, and careers. However, if you didn't feel that way, you would need something else to make you feel important/have a place in society. So, being the only one who knows what happened or being part of an "in-group" of people who know provides some sense of belonging.

At least that's what the microchip in my brain (controlled by major league baseball) tells me.

I blame the RIAA.

Think about it for a sec: you've got motive, what with all the rampant CD piracy in that part of the world, and you've got the ability--all they had to do was reverse the polarity of the last couple of major albums from 'suck' to 'blow', and you've got waaay more than a billion tons.

Gimme a couple minutes to swig some more cold medicine and I'll even come up with a diagram on how they got Clay Aiken five miles under Indonesia, too.

German Guy:

What I meant to say was "Gigantic wave in the Indian Ocean on the 26th." But it was misintrepreted as "Nuke Houston by Paul Wolfowitz on the 27th."

They're sort of similar...Just sayin is all...

The government got wind that I spread the word and plan B was initiated. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Since when did we start paying attention to conspiracy theorists? Mind you, the law of large numbers says they eventually have to be right about something. Think about that.
