Cue the people complaining about how obnoxious cell phones are and telling us all that they don't have one...

2005-01-05 02:07:53 PM
Uh, I <3 Sprint?

2005-01-05 03:41:21 PM
No cell phone works very well when forcefully jammed down the throat of the caller.

i've had my Nokia 3650 with T-Mobile service for about a year now... hasn't given me any problems.

I think cell providers are getting a little too 'feature packed' with their phones. You know what I like about my cell phone? I can dial someones number and talk to them if they answer. And if someone wants to call me it makes a noise that alerts me of that fact. I don't need my cellphone to take pictures, surf the internet, text chat, play games (in hospital waiting rooms with signs that say 'turn off your phone'), organize my schedule, play mp3's, do my taxes, or any of the other features phone manufacturers are trying to cram into the phones. I just need to (occasionally) talk to someone.

For that my LG phone does a fine job.

2005-01-05 07:38:53 PM
Considering you can pick up a 3 ounce piece of plastic & talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime...I'd say they're not so bad.

2005-01-05 08:08:45 PM
so it's the phones that suck, not the providers, right?

2005-01-05 08:17:10 PM
Too bad I'll never own one of those annoying little gadgets, so I'll never know.

2005-01-05 08:17:26 PM
cell phones suck and u r all dum 4 havng one, i dont even have one you suck

My Treo 600 can kick your ghey little cellphone's ass.

2005-01-05 08:19:21 PM
I got the smallest and lightest phone nokia had to offer, that is all i was looking for in a phone. No complaints either =)

2005-01-05 08:19:49 PM
I don't like those camera phones, such an invasion of privacy. Everywhere I go people are taking pictures left and right. I might as well right my social security number on my forehead or something.

Uh, that would be me. *raises hand* right here. No cellphone. Proud of it. All that good stuff. No e-Leash for me.

Thanks for the cue.

I have a cell, but Im not one of the obnoxious ones. Id rather the companies worked on making sturdier more robust phones and better xmit/rx tech in general than a phone that wishes it were a gameboyPDAmp3digitaltoastgrindingtextmessanger.

2005-01-05 08:22:07 PM
I have a Nokia 3361 and live by high power lines..holy crap..I have to be in a certain spot just to recieve a signal strong enough so that I don't break up to the other person. Usually its laying down on my bed with my face turned to the left..

Even when I'm somewhere else I usually don't remember getting more then one or two bars.. Damn AT&T

/raise the bar my ass

2005-01-05 08:25:56 PM
Wow. That looks exactly like me phone sid007

I'm switching to Nextel from Cingular this Saturday. I'll be extremely happy to get rid of the POS Ericsson R278d.

I have a feature jammed Motorola v600, its call reception is very uneven in Chicago and it consistently drops calls, however I am able to play Sexy Poker 2004 in any location, which is fantastic.

For some reason I never had these problems back when I had an all analog phone. I could be wrong but I blame the switch to all digital. The so-called clearer calls, as they called them when digital phones started coming out, are actually worse. I'm just basing this on my personal experience, though, I could be wrong, it could just be due to different network areas/phone brands.

1998-2001, Analog - NEC phone with CellularOne, never had any problems. In fact I gave the phone to my parents when I moved to college and it still works perfectly for them to this day.
2001-2002, Digital - Samsung phone with Sprint PCS, constant problems
2003, Digital - Motorola with T-Moble, was so bad I drove over it with my car in complete disgust
2004 to Present, Digital Samsung with T-Mobile, not as bad, still get lots of disconnects and no service in areas where I'll get excellent service at different times of the day. T-Mobile decides to tell me the circuits are all busy at certain times of day and I can't use it.

2005-01-05 08:27:32 PM
Does anyone think besides me that it would be a smart idea to allow phones to be interchangeable between providers?

That would be me as well. It's useless to try and get a signal where I live, and if I could deal with not having a phone PERIOD, I'd welcome it. Stupid people wanting me to play music contacting me at all hours.

2005-01-05 08:30:27 PM
Greenbeanx - No; That would only spur competition, which is bad.

2005-01-05 08:31:12 PM
my cingular rep notified me that i'll never be able to find a nokia model like mine again: no hinges, no color screen, no photo capablities, and dense as all fark so it's nigh invulnerable.

i'm kind of dreading the day when this one dies.

2005-01-05 08:31:18 PM
i have a nextel motorola i730, the actual cell phone service (phone calls only) is pretty good and i rarely have dropped calls. the walkie-talkie, on the other hand, is godawful. my i90 never seemed to have the issues this new model has... are tehre any other nextel useres who think it's just this model, or does everyone have issues with the direct connect lately?

2005-01-05 08:31:38 PM
I've got a decent phone, but I rarely talk so I'm good. What is really a lovely piece of technology is my iPod.

*sniff*

It's...so...beautiful.

2005-01-05 08:32:40 PM
I don't have a cell phone. I want one, but not enough to actually pay for it. What does that make me?

2005-01-05 08:33:20 PM
well, i have alltel or however in gods name you spell it, and i always, even inside and in basements andsuch have at les 3 bars
i also have a camera phone, and it is completely useless. the camera serves me zero purpose. but hey! guess who got a brand new camera phone for fifty bucks
ebay, if you were a man, you would be more of the man than shaft
cell phones are handy, and arent too bad as long as you arent a fink about using it. i turn my volume down and speak somewhat quietly so everyone doesnt have to hear what im talking about
and ringtones are stupid. my ringtone goes ring ring
stupid 5 minute long concerto ringtones loud enough to hear over a dying yak

gameshowhost: Greenbeanx - No; That would only spur competition, which is bad.

Really..so allowing people to use there phones would undermine the fabric of society? It never made sense why you have to buy a new phone for each provider..just seems stupid and wasteful..they're locking you in with your phone

Cell phone users are obnoxious, and I am not one.

2005-01-05 08:35:01 PM
The problem with mobile phones is they came too long after the CB fad died and instead they got compared to land line communication rather than other radio. The stuff now is astronomically better than the old mobile systems. I think I still have my first suit case phone somewhere.

2005-01-05 08:35:55 PM
I love Cingular, but I hate Motorola. Can't wait until Nokia releases a decent clamshell for the US market.

2005-01-05 08:36:29 PM
I work on the network side of things for a cellphone company.

Really, I do.

Let me tell you all:

You're going to drop calls - you've got a tiny quarter-watt transceiver that's talking to a 40-watt transceiver that could be one block away - could be 10 miles away. This may not mean anything to the average user, but it's a hell of a thing that it ever works for that reason alone.

You're going to drop calls. You just are. There's not ONE reason, there's about 20, & they're not always fixable from the network side.

You're going to have interference. Imagine you've got a cluster of 10 radio stations in a 10-square mile radius that are transmitting on a limited amount of channels. Interference is EVERYWHERE in the environment - that tiny quarter-watt transmitter in your pocket is at its mercy at all times.

Capacity on a cell-site is limited. You're sharing a limited amount of that with other users. Most times it's available - there are times it is not. When it's not available, you won't be able to make a call until someone gets off THEIR phone.

I'd go into bit error rate, frame error rate, C/I ratios, AMR vocoders, EFR vocoders, VSWR, antennas, and some other stuff that you wouldn't understand - That I fully don't understand if this wasn't too long already.

A cell phone is not a land line. If you NEED to be in constant contact with the rest of the world, get a land line phone & sit by it. If you are dying from some horrible disease & need to have consistant, reliable communications with the outside world, get a land line.

This stuff is all voodoo & witchcraft put together with duct-tape & 8lb fishing line.

The Treo 600 is great for it's data functionality, but sucks as a phone in non-metro areas. The 650 is supposed to be better, but I'm not too sure of that.

2005-01-05 08:37:00 PM
I have to admit it pisses me off hearing about all these damn worthless "features" like ringtones (gee - look at me look at me!) and streaming video when I still have a dropped call at least once a day. Get the basic functionality working first, stupid.

That being said, I have Verizon because they have the best coverage, but their phone selection sucks. ;-)

Amen Consumer Reports!

I miss my old candy bar phone. Worked great..

"Well I don't have one o' them newfangled wireless tel-ee-phones, nope. I don't like all the convenience they be providing. They's just a fad, like them motor drawn carriages."

Sorry people, but not having a cell is nothing to be proud of. Not that having a cell phone IS someting to be proud of, its a lifestyle choice. Its kind of like sexual orientation, you're in one group or the other and you live with what you choose. No need to bring pride into it.

2005-01-05 08:38:44 PM
Motorola Motorola Motorola...abused everyone I have had and couldn't break the damn things. I have used a couple Samsung and they were garbage reception wise, durability wasn't terrible. I busted my Nokia within a month.

2005-01-05 08:39:08 PM
My mobile has my life in it. I have a MotoV600. Good phone. It's brothers and sisters are good phones, too.

2005-01-05 08:39:50 PM
Cell phone users are obnoxious, and I am not one.

I rarely - if ever - use my phone in public places.

I did use it once while stranded on a small Northern Cali highway to get help. Obnoxious?

Ha! You are either poor, cheap, have no friends or some combination of each.

That or you're a dinosaur.

Or a hippie.

Once my two year plan was up on my phone, I cancelled the service. Rogers didn't like that.
I hate how cellphone companies slip in all those fees. A $25 a month plan turns into $35 a month and if you miss a payment they are sure to promptly let you know.

2005-01-05 08:43:27 PM
un1337: The 650 is supposed to be better, but I'm not too sure of that.

Please tell me you work for T-Mobile. Then, please tell me you know when this is being released. Then, tell me when!

Thanks

I have a 3 y/o LG TM520 that I love.
It has been dropped on concrete, gotten soaked in the rain, and left out in my car in sub-zero weather. Still works like a charm.
I have Telus. I have pay-and-talk, but I have them take it off of my credit card every month so I don't have to keep getting those phone cards, plus it saves me money compared to the subscription plan. Best of both worlds.

As far as I know, most GSM phones already are. Want to switch to a different GSM provider? Take out the sim and put in the sim from the new provider. Ta-da!

...Unless, of course, you have a phone that's locked to one provider, but there are usually fixes for that.
