Why do these guys have to buy games? Shouldnt they just give them out, you know as payment for being shot at
2005-01-04 09:56:26 AM
No you're not, i hate playing games on PC. It's not the fact that i have a laptop, but even on my home PC (brand new dell), it just doesn't feel natural. i'll just go back to the Xbox.
/played some troops on Live in Halo II
2005-01-04 10:06:42 AM
My buddy just got back from Iraq last week. Army medic...A lot of his guys are former Marines, and he reports that the game of choice in his unit was Battlefield Vietnam, wireless LAN style.
2005-01-04 10:41:07 AM
For those of you who hate console FPSes, go to and order the SmartJoy FRAG. It hooks up a PS/2 keyboard and monitor to an Xbox or PS2.
2005-01-04 10:53:25 AM

Star Ocean is my game of choice right now.

And Deus Ex: Invisible War (hey, I just bought it used for my Xbox for $10. Gimme a break!)
2005-01-04 11:01:02 AM
I like halo co-op. The Vs. mode bores me. :)
2005-01-04 11:08:22 AM
Good for them. I personally use GTA:San Andreas for my stress relief, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
2005-01-04 11:30:42 AM
"This is a little bit different," said Sgt. James Atakoglu, 28, who drove a bulldozer during the battle for Fallujah, often smashing down buildings where insurgents were believed to be hiding. "I don't think games are going to have a dozer crashing into a building."

Oh yeah? Old idea.

I could kick anyone's ass in Halo 2. Anyone's!!!

/just saying
2005-01-04 11:41:42 AM
See? Everything's all right over there. They're playing video games, for fark's sake!
2005-01-04 11:50:12 AM
come on then SacriliciousBeerSwiller, I'll take you all on!

Meh. Halo 2 is overrated. Half-Life 2 is where it's at.

I love these guys. Halo 2 is an amazing game, that fully lived up to the hype, until the abrupt ending. It created more questions than it answered, really.

Just distill your stupidity for what it really is, guys:

You love your PC FPS (or otherwise) games and think consoles suck. I am a PC gamer myself, and having played both HL2 and Halo2, I am of the opinion that HALO2 is better hands down. Your mileage may vary based upon your experience, or apparently in some of your cases, bias.
2005-01-04 12:02:29 PM
Maybe they like the video games because they are about kicking butt - the fun part of war. I'm sure the game wouldn't be so popular with marines if it was merely about scavaging for metal, and having to practice the trade skill of welding the pieces to a vehicle.
2005-01-04 12:04:27 PM
I downloaded the demo for Half-Life 2. It sucks much ass. Great graphics, but the gameplay sucks. You want a great fps then pick up Call of Duty United Offensive. Best multiplayer fps ever.
2005-01-04 12:20:16 PM
Be fair to half life 2. Ravenholm is a horrible place to set the demo for the game, because it's nothing like the rest of it.
/would have used Nova Prospekt.

The Xbox is a stylish paperweight. Halo is the only thing keeping it alive, and it's an average FPS at best.

You can say that as many times as you like, but it won't make it a true statement.
2005-01-04 12:23:27 PM
PC > Console
2005-01-04 12:31:13 PM
Wizzin: PC > Console

Brand new PC + latest graphics card + huge HD + large monitor > console

console > 4 year old PC
2005-01-04 12:35:57 PM
After killing, they cool off and destress with simulated killing.

Sounds great.
2005-01-04 12:54:13 PM
They are SOLDIERS jack.
Maybe if you were man enough you would join up too.
2005-01-04 12:55:14 PM
Crap - my 12 months spent in Kuwait (no shots fired - I was a REMF), I bought an Xbox, a BUNCH of games, and about 400 movies. I also read about 200 paperbacks, which I left in country for other troopies. The enemy in Kuwait was sheer boredom...and the stupidarse officers who were disappointed that they weren't "in combat" in Iraq...

/thankfully my enlistment (all 8 years) ended in October...
2005-01-04 12:55:26 PM
The Xbox is a stylish paperweight. Halo is the only thing keeping it alive, and it's an average FPS at best. I haven't played Metroid Prime Echoes yet, though I want to.

It is stylish, isn't it? I have the super stylish Halo Special Edition-

You play your games and I'll play mine. What do you care?
2005-01-04 12:55:57 PM
...funny how they take the time to both plug halo/xbox many times and then subtley bash Metroid.....only to choose an accompanying picture of them playing on a Gamecube.....

/Halo 2 is just a patch
//its still a fun patch
2005-01-04 01:02:04 PM
this scares me.
2005-01-04 01:21:19 PM
I sent a bunch of games over to iraq to my friend. Doom 3, cod, nfsu2, hl2, farcry. He passed them around the camp for the guys to install on thier lap tops. He says they help them forget about the war and beeing separated from family.
They also enjoy strong booze sent in mouthwash bottles.
2005-01-04 01:29:24 PM
When I was in Iraq we played about 400 seasons worth of Madden, NBA Live, and NCAA. Oh so long ago when I was stationed in Korea we used to have Tecmo Superbowl seasons when we were in the field.
2005-01-04 01:30:57 PM
You sure Vado? It looks like an Xbox to me. I think I can even tell they're playing Halo 2. I think I see that big rocket launcher taking up the right half of the screen.

Hmm, I took another look. The Marine in the background might be playing on a blue GameCube.
2005-01-04 01:36:45 PM
Ya just gtta watch out for that gets into everything!

/Sent a GI a free Halo 2 copy...
//Enjoy and Happy New Year, Soldier!
///Now if only you could use Covenant weapons on them insurgents (like a sticky grenade on a radical muslim! pop!)
2005-01-04 01:37:42 PM
OK, one more time. I see a black GameCube on top of the set, but I think he's playing the Xbox underneath it. Looks like multiple consoles hooked up to one tv.

...and they're probably soldiers, not Marines. Grey shirts & black shorts are the new Army PT gear.
2005-01-04 01:43:45 PM
Those are US Army soldiers. Those are our PTs and you can see a pair of DCUs hanging behind them. Also it looks like the cords from the controllers are going to a console underneat the TV. It looks like an XBOX. The cord coming from the gamecube leads to besides the TV.
2005-01-04 01:59:39 PM
too bad the innocent iraqi civilians they indiscriminately kill don't get to unwind like this.

...It's kind of a shame.
2005-01-04 02:43:16 PM
ahh yes....i see the xbox now. seeing a guy in the background, and the black gamecube on top of the tv with a wavebird receiver, AND not taking the time to meticulously follow the cordage.....yeah, that's a rocket launcher.
2005-01-04 03:17:13 PM
I never want to see that game again. it was horrible! consider yourself served.
2005-01-04 05:47:55 PM
I played for a night with a bunch of guys in Iraq on Rainbow six. They were on the main satellite channel taking up bandwidth because it was the middle of the night there. Amazingly it had almost no latency. Sometimes their tactics would work and others not so much. Probably a good training tool as far as tactics go.

Haven't played Halo2 since getting ghost recon 2.
2005-01-04 07:39:59 PM
Playing Halo creates MORE stress in me than it relives.

XBOX makes a great DVD player for my kids tho.

/anyone remember Intellivision (w IntelliVoice)?
2005-01-05 06:12:57 AM
How about setting up an open internet cafe near to the camp with a WiFi link to the server? Let the insurgents and the marines frag each other electronically instead.
2005-01-05 12:04:04 PM
I spend my free time in Iraq trying to locate the soldier chicks who wind up on those amateur pr0n sites...
2005-01-05 01:21:48 PM
"In a game, you can die and press start and go all over again. This is a little bit different," said Sgt. James Atakoglu, 28, who drove a bulldozer during the battle for Fallujah, often smashing down buildings where insurgents were believed to be hiding. "I don't think games are going to have a dozer crashing into a building."

Stupid, stupid marine.
It's not in there now, but it will be in the next release. They're going to hire some guys whose time is up as consultants on the realities of the real war.

So, in actual fact: the whole war in Iraq only serves as a live fire drill for how the gaming industry is going to develop in the next few years.
That's what all those millions are being used for and I for one think it's money well-spent.
Bush a genius for the economy after all? Who would've thunk?
