Here in Austin, we get a lot of GI's in town from the base up in Killeen (Fort Hood). When they come to my store, they actually seem to all buy games like Battlefield 1942 or BF Vietnam, Call of Duty, etc etc.

It's good that they enjoy what they do enough to even do it (well, "virtually") in their free time. I don't think I could bring myself to play a Computer Repair Game, if one ever existed...

Well, I'm thinking being in the army or something like sports star is a tad more exciting...which causes those that do it for a living to continue playing virtually.

Just a thought

BTW, you mean everybody doesn't turn to Halo for stress relief? Amazing...

I'm thinking maybe it's a whole lot of things like digging holes and painting things, and also trundling around being terrified of landmines and snipers.

Note that being in the armed forces is nothing like playing these games, just from the level of action. In the games, you are constantly in combat. In reality, you are mostly pulling guard duty, cleaning, maintaining equipment, etc.

when i was in iraq, we networked xboxs together and had our own private wars playing halo, between tents. it wasnt until i got back that i realized how funny it actually was. with all the crap going on, we had our arses parked in folding chairs intently playing away. meanwhile....

thats what we should have been doing. instead we slacked off and played games. well, the cleaning and mantaining part. cant shirk guard duty. you have to sit up in a tower and think about how your friends are all playing games without you.

you have to sit up in a tower and think about how your friends are all playing games without you.

That must make it seem twice as long :-(

I was never in the regular army, just stationed in Fort Livingroom (Army Reserves).

Have y'all ever thought about rigging up a camera system instead of poking your head over the sandbags on a guard tower? I'm sure there are lots of us here in the states that would pitch in for the camera and monitor, so you could look for the enemy without being a target. If your CO goes for it, post on fark for donations of the equipment or money to pay for it.

/If he doesn't go for it, post anyway and use the money for your beer fund ;-)

that is an awesome idea. too bad im not in iraq now, or id take you up on it. we had unmanned aerial vehicles watchin over us, so nobody got close.

Well, Duh! I play it all the time. If you're online sometime, look for a server called MODDY GULCH. Red vs. Blue rules.

Meh. Halo 2 is overrated. Half-Life 2 is where it's at.

2005-01-04 04:39:05 AM
It's just coincedence that only msnbc sees this as news worthy? The average age of a marine and the average age of a video game player probably coincides nicely so its pretty obvious they'd be playing video games. Oh wait they are playing HALO, another m$ property. Let's plug it right away! This is like whichever network Disney owns running a "news segment" about an upcoming movie on a Disney owned studio. Welcome to the media age.

"In a game, you can die and press start and go all over again. This is a little bit different... "

At last, Military Intelligence!

But seriously, I'll never turn to Halo(2) for stress relief. A first person shooter isn't supposed to be played on a console, it's witchcraft. Once you go PC, you never go back.

Whatever happened to going to 3 day weekend passes, female mudwrestling, and the like? Now that's stress relief.

Damn, wish I had stuff like XBox when I was in the Corps. We did stuff like drink beer, play cards and pass around the latest issue of Playboy.

Should be playing doom.

I'm the only one on Earth I believe that can't stand the keyboard/mouse setup, and would love for the Xbox controller to be used on all PC games. Closest I got to getting used to it was MOH:AA, but I still MUCH prefer FPS on consoles.

2005-01-04 05:02:52 AM
Rows of Nintendo's "Metroid Prime: Echoes" for the GameCube console went untouched, probably because the Xbox and Playstation are far more popular here.

The fools!

2005-01-04 05:07:46 AM
"'Half-Life 2', 'Madden NFL 2005', 'Halo', 'Sims' among favorites"
...
"They like the latest games military games, car games, everything with speed."

So now The Sims is a "speed" game?

PurpleHaze:

All in a matter of preferences. I used to use a strictly keyboard setup with first person shooters. I did that for years. I learned to use the mouse/keyboard combo with Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Truth be told, however, the aiming is MUCH better with a mouse/keyboard combo. A controller can only do so much. But again, it's a matter of preferences.

"Rows of Nintendo's "Metroid Prime: Echoes" for the GameCube console went untouched, probably because the Xbox and Playstation are far more popular here."

The Xbox is a stylish paperweight. Halo is the only thing keeping it alive, and it's an average FPS at best. I haven't played Metroid Prime Echoes yet, though I want to.

2005-01-04 05:12:18 AM
wait til they get to the end of the game, that'll piss them off

Yeah, although I'm 100% sure that statement is true, it seemed like an unnecessary dig at GameCube. AgentPothead might be on to something.

I imagine they all read about Echoes' mediocre multiplayer and opted for Halo 2 instead.

2005-01-04 05:29:06 AM
So glad to see a good number of folks with their heads on straight in this thread. I'm referring, of course, to those who insist that FPS and Console are anathema... as well as those who recognize that Halo 2 doesnt live up to all the hype.

smuuba-

We were over in Baghdad, one of my guys built a server, set up wi-fi, and ran Day of Defeat tournaments. Everyone who had, or could borrow, a laptop in the camp was on.

'Cause there's nothing like shooting Nazis. Especially when they're your friends.

Our server had movies and porn, too.

AgentPothead: Welcome to the media age.

i dont think halo2 really needs to be plugged anymore. the reality is, hoards of soldiers, marines, etc. are playing video games over there. its no conspiracy.

My gf used to be the same way. I made a fine example of her to prove my point. A fine, CS: Source playing example.
That, and after becoming a performance perfectionist on PC games, I can't look at a console game without saying "Ah! Where's the antialiasing?"

"I don't think games are going to have a dozer crashing into a building."

That would be cool.

"sometimes you read too many books"

Can't have that.
Might lead to thinking.
Morons...

I can't believe all the Halo 2 thrashers. Just because I own a PC and have been playing FPS on a beautiful, beautiful computer _doesn't_ change the fact that Halo 2 is an excellent game. You know for a fact that there is NO hacking (well, not widespread) and the controller allows sniping and quick jerk responses better then then you can imagine is possible.

Hurry up and wait is a well understood expression by anyone who has ever served. There is only so much maintenance a person can do, so you do other stuff:

• 'Enemy action' (anything from spitball on up)
• 'Fender bender' (mid-air collision)
• 'Blowed up real good' (landmine)
• 'Bullet catcher' (friendly fire)
• 'Parallel parking' (another helicopter crash)
• 'Trip and fall' (non-combat injuries)
• 'Throw the pin' (friendly grenade)
• 'Hopscotch' (another landmine)
• 'Darwin Achiever' (killed by own weapon)
• 'Bar-B-Que' (burned to death by friendly fire)

In fact you have to drop down sixteen places to find 'Killed in Action' on CNN's Coalition Casualties list, so playing Halo 2 is your best chance for 'heroism under fire' while in Iraq.

/While in Bosnia the big favorite was Sunstorm's Deer Hunter. Go figure.

2005-01-04 07:36:11 AM
We played BOND 64 in Bosnia. This was back in 97 of course.

2005-01-04 07:36:52 AM
Quit crying about playing Halo with a gamepad, you don't have to.

2005-01-04 07:41:51 AM
smuuba you are the first person to bring up conspiracy. It's pretty obvious that msnbc hawking halo isn't any kind of "conspiracy". It is american business at work.

2005-01-04 07:57:14 AM
I'm thinking maybe it's a whole lot of things like digging holes and painting things, and also trundling around being terrified of landmines and snipers.

Then they definitely won't be relaxing by playing Halo 2 on legendary.

Damn sniper jackal bastards...

Oooh "high speed wires"!

2005-01-04 08:06:47 AM
Hey 311rulez! I still have an coffee mug I picked up from somewhere in theatre-'Operation Joint Guard'. Then again I knew it as Op Palladium or simply SFOR. It would make more sense if it were UNPROFOR since I worked spitting distance from a PX on that earlier tour and can't for the life of me remember visiting a PX on the later one. Oh well.

2005-01-04 08:32:18 AM
God I missed out - I should have joined the marines in high school! I could be shooting the bad guys during the day, and shooting my friends at night. Ok, I know that is glorifying it all but it is nice to know that something that I find very enjoyable (the games) is enjoyable to people who are fighting.

Raijin Z

I hear it doesn't work so good - at least that is what gamespot says about it.

I hate using a controller, but I am getting used to it. I can't believe being owned by microsoft that Xbox doesn't have a mouse and keyboard that is official.

makes me wonder about microsoft sometimes

Goldeneye tournaments(the original N64, not this Rogue Agent bullshiat) while deployed supporting the peacekeeping tournaments in Bosnia. Rocked.

Almost as fun as watching the drunken Russian paratroopers guzzling vodka from refilled Sprite bottles and getting into brawls with inanimate objects.

Peacekeeping tournament? sheesh.

Pong?

No... maybe Daikatana!@

Echos is still on the shelves, prob. because its mainly a single player, and you have better workings for a LAN party anyway.

Echos is awesome, but Halo is better suited for the enviroment.

Agreed. Hogging a TV & console with a one-player game is bordenline treason when you're in a combat zone. I haven't played MP: Echoes yet, but I've heard the Multiplayer is pretty lame.

GameCubes are good for multiplayer tournaments, because unlike the PS2, they come right out of the box with four controller ports. Super Smash Brothers Melee was pretty popular in Afghanistan.

We played a lot of Goldeneye & Mario Kart back in the day of the N64. I think Mario Kart Double Dash would be fun to play now.
