Mmmm, Soylent Green

I can relate. All I saw was a picture on the Internet and I can't bring myself to eat any kind of meat at all right now.

Hmmmm. Now that I think of it.....seafood will still be caught, processed, frozen, and shipped to grocery stores all over the world. It will probably be a long time before I eat it again.

The answer = fresh water fish.

I defer to the crappie thread from earlier.

Ok, that's just plain stupid. I'm not even going to waste the time going into the biology and physics of it all.

The answer = fresh water fish.

Aha. Well when I get back to the frame of mind where I can think about meat again, I'll do that.

Ok, that's just plain stupid. I'm not even going to waste the time going into the biology and physics of it all.

Okay, then can you waste the time posting a link or something? I'd sure like to feel better about this.

*Should not have clicked that earlier link with that big ol' picture of .....tsunami graphicness*

i know of someone who was 'sitting on the dock by the bay', when they fished someone out, the body had been underwater for a while, and was covered in crabs... he hasnt been to fishermans warf since

on the other hand, lakes around mt st helens were restocked by ducks, they stick their heads into clouds of fish eggs in on lake, then spred them around to others...

What's so wrong with that, I happen to be in the mood for Thai. Thai people.

Fish eat far worse stuff than humans. Like feces, etc.

I can understand the psychological prolem, but there shouldn't be any danger.

And to JustIgnorant, I'm sure these aren't the same people that are starving to death.

2005-01-03 06:33:00 AM
I'm with Just Ignorant on this one. I thought people were starving to death over there.

Coming soon to your local supermarket dressed as Mrs. Paul's Fish Sticks. Check your Sunday newspaper for a valuable cents-off coupon.

I read elsewhere that their entire fishing fleet was destroyed.

I wonder if that too could have something to do with decreased fish consumption?

2005-01-03 06:51:42 AM
Sometimes you get the fish, sometimes the fish gets you.

/all organic matter on the planet has been been cycled through living things thousands of times.

I think it's horribly sad that these people are allowing superstitious beliefs to rob them of a vital protein source.

What were the fish using for bait?

2005-01-03 07:03:41 AM
Ok, I RTFA, didn't see anything about anybody finding any bodyparts in thier fish.

If I were in Sri Lanka right now I'd be taking advantage of the low prices. I don't think anything could bring down seafood prices here in Japan.

2005-01-03 07:26:45 AM
Actually the answer isn't freshwater fish, it's realizing that everything cycles through and there's a good chance that things you ate chowed down on something you've never even dreamed of. There are more creatures living on your body RIGHT NOW than there are humans on the earth, so just get over the squeamishness and be a realist.

Speaking of Sri Lanka: Check this out.

I have learned that I can go to Sri Lanka and help with tsunami relief, and I intend to leave as soon as possible. Wish me luck.

I will sacrifice my comfort and relative decadence to aid others who are in need, and hopefully I will move toward enlightenment. A large percentage of Sri Lankans are Buddhist, like me, and I will help all of them indiscriminately, be they Tamil "terrorists" or not.

I don't have enough money to contribute significantly, so I will use what I have after quitting my job to make my trip, after which I will have literally nothing but gratitude, humility and determination.

I have volunteered with UNICEF, and they will be in touch with me with follow-up information regarding my volunteering. I will try to let everybody know what happens before I leave.

This will be the most spontaneous thing I have ever done in my life, and hopefully the most rewarding.

We're Americans, we're bored by this tragedy already. And let's be frank; the only reason we cared about this to begin with is because like all fine liberals of the west, we worry deeply about all the brown people living in countries we plan to vacation in someday.

Donner, party of ten, your table is ready.

2005-01-03 08:45:24 AM
abdul its great that you're going over there but don't do it so that you can reward yourself with enlightenment, do it so you can help those in need. Otherwise, you will be dissappointed.

2005-01-03 09:00:33 AM
At least the fish are organically grown. Eat more fish.

2005-01-03 09:01:47 AM
Ok so they arent eating fish any more, I just feel sorry for all those cats and dogs soon to be on the plate.

2005-01-03 09:02:46 AM
aggrazel: I believe it will be a trade-off.

2005-01-03 09:37:55 AM
good on you, abdul... (see the good Karma already starts)

enlightenment is like a stray dog. the harder you go after it, the faster it will run away from you.

relax and walk through your life. it will come to you.

Crabs, prawns and groupa lay on wooden boxes.

Groupa? Must be a New England thing.

Notice its only in Sri Lanka. The people in India are already accustomed to polluted water with dead bodies in it.

Good luck and best wishes. I heard the most damaged areas were parts of the island controlled by the Tamil Tigers. There was a 3 month cease fire before this. Maybe this is a chance for the government and the Tigers to cooperate in rebuilding and help bridge the gap between them.

I wonder if the number of cow births is going to skyrocket in Sri Lanka seeing how they believe people are reincarnated as cows.

Won't touch the fish but my toilet, nut licking dog can give me kisses all night long..

2005-01-03 10:37:55 AM
abdul that is very, very cool of you. I wish I could hear of lots of people doing the same thing. Perhaps you can start a blogger or something and keep people updated on your progress... that is, if you can find internet access over there. How long are you staying? Is UNICEF going to keep you fed and stuff? I'm not too clear on the whole process.

This guy gets my award for best quote in article:

"Naturally, the fish would have attacked some of the corpses," said Thilak Ranaviraja, head of the Disaster Management Center. "But people shouldn't worry. It's like eating pork. Pigs eat all the rubbish. But we eat pork, don't we?"

Let me make sure I've got this right. Pigs eat rubbish. People are rubbish. Fish eat people. People eat pigs. People eat fish. Does this mean that pigs need to eat more fish for the trifecta? Or pigs should eat people?

I need to think on this one a little more.
