Let them drill. Who the hell on this thread or anywhere in America has even stepped foot in that part of the earth? Whats that you say, you might have seen some special where somone flew a plane over a reindeer heard? No one goes up there, it is a god forsaken hellhole of an environment. Its not a vacation spot, its not Yellowstone. I lived in Alaska for 8 years, and my friend lived in Katsebuke growing up, and has never been there. My dad used to go up there for Artic Brimfrost training for the Corps of Engineers, and the sun doesn't even come up for 3 months and you can't let engines quit running or they will never start again. Drilling here isnt going to hurt anything, at least no more than the cute little birds and fuzzy animals that were killed and displaced for that house or apartment you live in.

The Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge? I would assume none, since it's a wildlife refuge.
Historically letting private companies use/lease/buy federal lands becomes a huge fiscal burden on taxpayers when the land has to be cleaned up after private companies. I assume you aren't for higher taxes.

Out of all the things on that list, you people focused on ANWR?

Pathetic. And I thought you guys knew how to flame.

jrsharfan: All these angry liberals and so many years between elections. What will they do, what will they do?

I know, we can't just take out our anger on foreign countries and the environment the way Republicans tend to.

Prospero424

Couldn't agree more.

Let's talk about her mention of Ashlee Simpson instead. Probably one of the top 5 things on there that pisses me off most.

The fact that someone like that lipsynching no-talent bubble gum factory media creation gets to have an album is a far worse signal of where our society is than ANWR will ever be.

Beslan, Russia, Sept. 3, 2004.

Yeah, I'll bet she'd like to forget these dates. The problem is you should remember these dates. Nothing like hiding from reality to make you chipper in the morning.

TheChaz, I see. The references to bad pop culture and political shennanigans threw me off.

I suppose I could agree. 2004, not particularly a year worth recalling.

2005, now there's a more wholesome number. May it prove less disasterous than its predecessor.

One of the best ones:

That the woman who dismissed a presidential briefing entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S." as a "historical" document is going to be our next secretary of state.

I just sent a "historical email" to a buddy that says that I'm determined to drink heavily tonight for New Year's.

mcflizzy: I suppose I could agree. 2004, not particularly a year worth recalling.

Exactly. Who among us wouldn't like to erase 9/11 from our memories. While I wasn't employed by my current employer at the time they lost 295 employees that day. I worked with a girl who lost her Aunt that day. Almost everyone I work with watched in horror from th 38th floor of our building what happened that day. Some have nightmares, some raced to the scene to try to help. One worked down there at the time and had to run for his life as the towers came down.

Arianna hit the nail on the head. 9/11, 3/11 9/3 should never have happened and it would be oh so nice if we could change those bits of history bu we can't, so we deal and move on.

i especially liked this headline:

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan kept on skiing in Jackson Hole, Wyoming for three days after the tsunami wave killed 100,000+ people

ooops. never mind. the press never reported that one.

Should Annan have immediately flown Washington to meet with Bush instead?

Oh, wait. What? Bush was vacationing in Crawford again and stayed there after it happened? Oh.

While I cannot speak for Kofi, I can attest to the fact that it is very possible to be in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and be cut off from all media for a few days, esp. whe on vaction. I've been there, they have like 1 tv station and when I'm on vacation I don't carry a cell phone or pager, it is a vacation.

I'm not trying to say what his circumstances were I'm just speaking from my experience in J.H. Wy.

Beautiful place btw, Go there if you have the means, it's right by Grand Teton National Park which is right next to Yellowstone.

Oh, wait. What? Bush was vacationing in Crawford again and stayed there after it happened? Oh.

tsk, tsk knuckleball... thank you for proving my point! GWB being in Crawford was all over the news, for example (washington post):

"The Bush administration more than doubled its financial commitment yesterday to provide relief to nations suffering from the Indian Ocean tsunami, amid complaints that the vacationing President Bush has been insensitive to a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions."

but Annan continuing to ski 72 hours on vacation after the tsunami hit didn't even make a ripple in the main stream news.

thanks again, knuckleball!

Someday I'll go. Right now my greatest vacations are spent in the "wasteland" areas of Utah, Arizona, Idaho, etc. Pussies who can't get anywhere in their lifted jeeps may call them "desolate wastelands" because the terrain isn't fun for mudding, but being able to do 20 mile days for a week without seeing anyone, except possibly your friends if you're hiking with them, is incredible. There is no bland wilderness if you're willing to try to connect with it.

Kofi vacationing = no big deal
GWB vacationing = insensitive to a humanitarian catastrophe of epic proportions

and with that, i am outta here!!! happy new year to alllllllllllllllllll!

It's probably slightly more obvious to the the world and media when you're on vacation in Crawford, Texas, when you hold press conferences in front of a blue backdrop with a seal that says "The Western White House, Crawford, Texas."

If Kofi Annan held a press conference in front of a backdrop that said "The Snowy UN, Jackson Hole, Wyoming", betcha you'd get more of that coverage you're craving.

Well, that's partially the fault that since numbers have been considered on vacation time Republicans are looking terrible. Clinton took very little vacation time in comparison to both Bush boys and Reagan.

costermonger:

In my opinion, if the oil companies/local yokels want to drill for oil, let them. As long as they own the land.

But they don't. Most of the land is federally owned wildlife parks and preserves. In order for it to be private land, the government would have to sell the land.

And that "2,000" acre thing is completely bullshiat. Does that even make sense? Look at the Texas oil fields and I'm sure they take up more than 2,000 acres for their supporting facilities. Where do the refineries go? Do we have to run a giant pipeline? Through Canada? Yea right! -- Oh, you want to rely on ships? Sorry... I think the ocean has had its fill of oil.

I'd rather just have a rewrite of the 2000 elections, starting with how Karl Rove was arrested for trying to bribe the Supreme Court and Katherine Harris blowing the whistle on Jeb Bush's illegal orders.

Ceph,

The technology exists now that allows oil companies to drill down and sideways and anyway they want...literally being able to drill an entire region from one small locale; htus, that is why they only need 2000 acres instead of the old school needing access to the entire reserve. They only need to build one facility on that godawful moonscape to be able to extract oil from the entire thing and not disturb the environment.

2004-12-31 09:33:45 PM
Why is this vacuous dilletante in the news at all? Was she ever relevant...because from where I'm sitting, she's a complete zero now.

It's like listening to a celebrity tell others how to think about a political issue...as if strutting around in make-up in front of a camera pretending to be someone else lends one a superior IQ.

Simply amazing...

TheGoblinKing but every foot you drill is very expensive. Ask anyone who has had to drill their own well (if you can get it for $10 a foot for an ordinary well you're lucky, let alone pumping crude). Sure, they're going to volunteer to drill a slant well 500 feet when a straight well would go down 50 feet. Uh huh...and when you tell the logging companies "hey, take out all that undergrowth in the woods...and you can take a couple small trees to make money on" they'll do a good job.

2004-12-31 09:38:35 PM
Sidi,

So it's more expensive, so what? The environment is saved, the oil is available for use, isn't that what we want?

2004-12-31 09:40:05 PM
Not gonna read the whole thread, but knowing Fark, let me remind you of the following:

(1) the UN is not a country.
(2) George Soros had more to do with the end of the Cold War than Reagan.
(3) Bush is the only president to use torture in the US history.
(4) Bush declared a War on Terror over 2 years ago and outside of Kabul there has been no progress. (See Russia, Indonesia, Iran, most of Afghanistan...)

Oh, sweet. I would be less weary then about drilling up there. If the method works safely, and we force them to use what they promise (meaning the oil companies), then they deserve a chance. I'd like the government to take giant security deposit, though, much like the rest of the country has to do on any new investment (rent, down payment, lease deposit, etc). If they fark up, they get kicked out & we have enough money, courtesy of them, to clean up the mess.

2004-12-31 09:42:19 PM
TheGoblinKing the big deal is that I doubt the drilling will all be done by slant. What I suspect is that the Repulican controlled congress+the Republican white house will lead to a blank slate. Basically I suspect a bill that says "The ANWR can be drilled" and then a contract handed over to a company to do it, without any restrictions.

Hey, I know it's crazy to distruct a government that has brought us everything from Teapot Dome to the Gulf of Tonkin. But maybe a blank check isn't the best way to deal with them. It's certainly lead to our current huge deficits.

Which worked in the Silver Valley (hey, the EPA wants to clean up all the lead we're drinking...as good little Idaho Repubs we don't...uhhh...what's that word...uhh...like that). Or Kellog (hey, our lead filter house burned down, but it would be expensive to replace...let's just keep pumping out lead dust and declare bankrupcy when our profits wane).

2004-12-31 09:48:23 PM
What's interesting about ANWR is that you have the Prudhoe Bay project to learn from...and I don't recall massive ecological disaster at the drill site from that. Why is it for some that drilling for oil automatically means ruined environment?

Slant drilling is how much of the Gulf of Mexico is drilled (I believe) and they haven't had some incredible environmental disaster. In fact, the worst environmental disaster from oil drilling ever was intentional (Saddam destroying Kuwaiti oil fields) and that was repaired much quicker than the hand-wringers thought. I'm sure the area must be devastated from the burning and spilling of so much raw crude...but you never seem to hear anything about that either.

I think that asking to drill on 2000 acres in that enormous reserve is reasonable beyond all arguments to the contrary.
