Times like this that I'm glad I have cats and snakes. If one doesn't get the rodents, the other will. :)

Ask not what your rat infestation can do for you, ask what you can do for your rat infestation

giant soybean drats!

So many animals hunted to near extinction yet we can't control those pesky rodents.

This should be a government problem, not the ship captain's. When I "sail" (what is the word for a non-sailing ship's movement?) a cargo ship across the ocean, my biggest concerns are a) not sinking and b) controlling mutiny with an iron fist. Notice that predatory rats are not in the list.

/problem solved.

Abdul, I'm guessing this ship's captain failed at your poing A. Ya know? His ship DID run aground.

I live in Alaska, and I kind of like being rat-free.

/hope they are able to clean the spill and contain the rats soon (even though this spill happened 22 days ago...sigh)

Snakes and cletus's (or neibhors as I like to call them) are plentifull in my area. The mongoose however, those are harder to come by.

seffner:

Snakes can't/don't live in alaska. Down here in juneau, the temp range is about right, but an average of 251 days of rain a year keep 'em out, and when you go farther north, it gets too cold in winter.

Yep. But rats...rats can withstand anything. So let's hope they didn't make it ashore. I'm all for soybeans...but not if they come with mandatory rat infestation.

Lets genetically engineer a new rat predator. We failed with dogs because they got all inbred. Cats figured out that they can just lay around and get fed anyway. Talks with double agent rats aren't going well. Also, nature isn't helping fast enough.

Could these be the End Times?
Earthquake+Tsunami+Volcano+2 rat invasions
It doesn't look good, folks.

Good point. Each snake released shall be issued an attractive asian herpetologist (because they are teh hot) this will ensure the snakes will stay warm while hunting the rats.

Hee hee...Regarding the tsunamis, I actually heard this from a relative at one of my family get-togethers last weekend: "...and you don't think the End Times are near?"
He was serious, of course. As a closeted anti-religious type, I would've been ostracized by everyone if I would've openly dismissed his claim (as I've wanted to every five months of my adult life when a natural catastrophe occurs). He gets to make his inflammatory remarks as if they're golden mantras, of course. Oh well.

1988 came and went without the End Times. My ultra-religious (and late) grandparents virtually guaranteed we'd be kissing Jesus H. Christ's feet by October of that year due to their cult-like Pentacostal church.

I think it would be odd for the creator of all there is to portend the end of a species on Earth by a string of unrelated catastrophes in proximity to each other. He's sitting "up" there, finally decides, "Okay, that's enough of the humans. Before I flip the switch, though, here's a series of deadly catastrophes. Because I love them."

/"religion" should be synonymous with "cult"

wait, the article said that the rats can be a threat to the local sea lion population?

what kind of candy ass sea lions you got up there that can't take out a stinkin' rat?

RTFA, but not too closely...

Palin: What's for afters?

Jones: Well, there's, uh, rat pie, rat pudding, rat sorbet or, uh, strawberry tart.

Palin: Strawberry tart?

Jones: Well, it's got some rat in it.

Palin: How much?

Jones: Six. Rather a lot really.

Palin: I'll have a slice without so much rat in it.
