Ever since I've seen Good Woman of Bangkok I've kinda wanted to go to this Thailand (no, not for that.)

More to see it in person. It looks like a place that needs to be experienced (no, not in that way.)

We should try to put together a Fark party in Thailand ... maybe get group rates on a place to stay and airfare there.

newmoonpuppyhead would probably be in.

Whoa, first a tsunami, and now a tidal wave? Those poor Phucketeers...

or is it Phuckers?

Here's my cousin's brief account, emailed to me this morning:

We are at The Evason, which has property at the southern tip of Phuket and on Bon Island. At about 10:00 am yesterday we were relaxing at breakfast at the hotels main restaurant overlooking Rawai beach. The hotel has a long pier for the boat service they operate to Bon Island. Many people were waiting on that pier and the bar area nearby. There were two signs something was strange. One was the sound, a thundering roar in the background and the sea seemed to literally leave the beach, as if a sudden low tide. The next minutes were absolutely unbelievable. The wave hit with such tremendous force and volume, the pier with all the people on it, the beach huts and all the boats were swept away at once. Gone in a second. It was quite the sight. Water was not all that was moving. Large rocks from the sea bed, debris, etc. were airborne. It was simply luck that we were in the restaurant. All were evacuated to high land (the hotel is built on a side of a mountain). I joined the beach effort, which was a nightmare, as a second wave was building momentum. Fortunately that didnt hit us anything like the first. There were sections of Phuket north of us that were hit 3-5 times.

C'mon, really.. an Isle named Phuket?
And improper English speaking English woman?

I couldn't see no water," said Rita Smith, a 54-year-old jeweler from England.

The morbid, sick bastard in me wants to see a video of the tsunami hitting. Is there such a thing out there?

Uhmm..
I always hear the British bag on Americans for butchering the english language and now I'm seeing quotes such as these:

"Me and my boyfriend, we were both in bed when it happened," said Laura Lynch, a 21-year-old office assistant from Wiltshire, England. "We were asleep. The fan stopped working and all the electricity went out, and we heard screaming.
"My boyfriend, Mark, he went out to see what was happening...."

"...all these people were screaming and I couldn't see no water," said Rita Smith, a 54-year-old jeweler from England

misquoted by nimrods or do these people really speak this way?

Here's some pics I found of the tidal wave.

I've been to Phuket (poo-KET) a few times with the Navy. It's a cool little town, I feel bad for those people.

"Ms. Lynch and her boyfriend were "lucky" because their rented bungalow was on a hill on Phi Phi island."

Hee hee. Pee Pee.

There should be no stupid comments about this tragedy. It looks like the death toll will be over 100,000 people. A lot fewer people died in the twin Towers attacks and the responses were not stupid. I'm not downplaying the New York attack but c'mon people.

damn, southeast asia hot spots are getting wiped out. bali? your tourist a splode. phuket? out to sea. looks like vietnam and cambodia will have alot of future business.

A word of advice: if you are at the beach, and the water heads for the horizon, head for the hills.

Phucket in a Bucket.

iFilm has several of the vids in the 'viral videos' section posted.

There's one where the tsumani hits a resort...everyone is running to the bar on raised ground. People are screaming. You see two tourists trying to climb ontop of a table, or a fence?...then the wave comes and completely washes them away -- they're almost certainly dead. The video cuts out when the bar is filling with water, and the cameraman can no longer keep the camera dry...

truly horrific.

I don't think that article is particularly well written. Out of everything I have read so far on the event this one has to be the worst.

Phi Phi appears as if it is two, jungle-covered islands built from craggy, hills and united by a narrow, flat . . .

One can usually only find such imagery on a pr0n for women site

Forgive me for being an asshat, but a 100,000 people have(mayhave) died... the Earth is overcrowded. It's the whole reason we have war, famine, disease, and natural disasters. It's nice to see that four horsemen are still on top of their game.

2004-12-29 04:03:19 PM
Here's a great page of recent Phuket pics. I was trying to find out what happened around kata and karon beaches, where I stayed, but here is patong beach, with at least one pic of a wave hitting. We took a day trip to ko phi phi, and I can't imagine anything there surviving.

Jonny.the.Q : Yeah, because overpopulation causes earthquakes.

You need a kick in the teeth and a tsunami-sized boot up the ass.

I spent the week of Thanksgiving a month ago at Patong Beach, Phuket, Thailand. I guess you could say this is the closest I've ever been to a major natural disaster. I keep thinking of all the people who worked on the beach, brought us food and drink, tried to sell us anything and everything, God..I hope they made it. Nicest people in the world. It's really spooky and sad to see all of these pictures and video of places I was just enjoying 4-5 weeks ago. Unbelievable.

Hey, is there any call for a Fark based aid campaign? (Seriously) If we can Fark a website don't you think we can get together more cash than Bush?

There should be no stupid comments about this tragedy.

Well, bear in mind that posting stupid comments is a way that some people deal with their feelings. People are going to feel frustration, shock and other uncomfortable emotions when something like this happens, and we each deal with it our own way.

If you see stupid comments, try to just ignore them.

I was merely pointing out that it's the Earth's cycle doing it's shiat.
I never said people caused Earthquakes, unless a Jenny Craig convention was doing jumping jacks......
OR BETTER YET! How about a giant Earthquake producing government issue tessala coil machine!

I have personal scale, If something is so offensive and insensitive and inhuman that tarvuz is calling for your ass to banned, then it must be the worst thing ever uddered by man.

2004-12-29 04:15:23 PM
Jonny.the.Q:

If ignorance is bliss, you must be the third happiest man alive (behind George W. Bush and bshur). Even if your statement were correct, which it is not, you are an asshat for posting it here and now.

Besides, the dangers of overpopulation on a global scale are vastly overrated (with notable local exceptions). Declining birthrates combined with an increasingly long-lived populace in wealthy countries (like the U.S.), offer a more significant threat. So you are not only insensitive, you are also wrong.

Why have you not removerd yourself from the food chain? This is a serious question. Really, I'm sure many of us would like to know.

I just donated $1000 to the International Red Cross at www.redcross.org.

I encourage you all to do the same at the disaster relief site of your choice, even if it's just a little. You won't even notice an extra $20 on your credit card bill, but if we all do it it'll be a big thing for the people there.

2004-12-29 04:20:43 PM
What I found disgusting about this whole think is immediately the talking heads (the news type and not the band) were trying to assign blame. They didn't ask what was being done to help all these people but only who was at fault for no advanced warning.
