I've always wanted to have an urban paintball tournament. In a large office with working elevators, furniture, etc.

/would be shot first

I'd say the strategy would be to seize the transit loop and Promenade Park and then make Monroe St. the frontline for the only thing of strategic value:

Fifth Third Field! Goodnight, Chesty, wherever you are.

Major Cramer said Marines will be dressed in green and will be carrying rifles through the streets, but the exercises should have a minimal impact on the downtown area. He said the Marines will be firing blanks and conducting operations throughout the area.

am i to understand that the Marines will doing their excercises while people are going about their daily activities? as in they're not closing off the blocks? i have one word for this idea: AWESOME!

"We used to do this when we were kids - you know, running around the woods," Ms. Atkin said. "They're just going to use the downtown."

anyone else want to have a Fark party in Toledo during this? we could all dress up in cammo and run around w/ squirt guns trying to squirt Marines. obviously, this is after getting very drunk. i'm sure they won't mind too much.

Instead of not using redundant headlines, submitter uses redundant headlines instead.

That was on Fark earlier this year, two guys running around the office shooting each other. They were arrested.

Feh... they won't let me play paintball anymore since I started carrying Grey's Anatomy with me. Is it my fault I was only taking soft tissue damage, and never in a vital organ?

they also pick up male prostitutes and after they are done, shoot them and go nuts in mcdonald's parking lots.

typical.

I remember a Western Challenge Ex I went to... or was it the last Milcon in '91... Maybe it was the first Western Challenge... anyway, Training in a town near Fort Wainwright Alberta, we got to run around the city and conduct excercises after getting a briefing from Military and RCMP officers that had served in Northern Ireland. Was pretty good. So realistic in fact, that I got to watch an RCMP officer get his leg broken when we were operating a roadblock. I can still hear the sickly crack of his fibua.

2004-12-29 01:40:52 PM
Heh.

/Thinks it would be hilarious if a whack-job sniper set up shop during these operation and started laying out marines.
//Thinks the military is full of shiat.
///Will pay for the sniper's ammo.

MOUT. Goood stuff.

2004-12-29 01:42:46 PM
Yea, believe it's only a training exercise. Before you know it, right after the Inauguration, Bush will hold 'training' exercises in all the blue states. Believe me man, I only voted for Kerry because I live in Massachusetts.

2004-12-29 01:43:03 PM
It would be safer to train in Baghdad & fight in Toledo.

2004-12-29 01:43:37 PM
Oh Great. As if parking didn't suck enough already from all the construction in there has been in downtown Toledo... Now I have to worry about plowing over a few marines on my way to work? WTF? I knew there was a reason I wanted to get out of this two-bit glass city.

2004-12-29 01:44:12 PM
Instead!

Oh, joy. Not only do I have to slog through farking shin-deep snow, I have to dodge a bunch of psychos with automatic weapons.
/hates this city

2004-12-29 01:47:26 PM
This headline needs the "What could possibly go wrong?" cliche attached.... Wasn't there a training exercise in NC in which the local sheriff (not in on the secret) justifiably blew some trainee's head off when the guy pointed a gun at him?

2004-12-29 01:47:51 PM
Praying for a live tank round and/or antitank round to go through an office bldg.

Holy Toledo!

/I guess this is where I type "obligatory"

2004-12-29 01:49:45 PM
It's about time, everyone knows what a threat Toledo is to the national security.

2004-12-29 01:49:57 PM
hazeleyedwolff: You're missing the point. These are marines actively training in a US urban center. This is becoming more common and less feared, why? Because Bush & his cronies tell you it's in your best interest to have the military running around "training" in your back yard?

Don't make me quote Ben Franklin again.

This in not in America's best interests. If it was the local National Guard, I could understand, but we're talking about the marines. If you don't think they have specific training camps already in place for urban warfare training, you need to do your homework.

/Buys some more guns and ammo.

ah, yes, my memory was not playing tricks on me:

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/US/02/24/soldier.killed/

Again I ask: What could possibly go wrong?

Try it with paintball guns or BB guns and see how long they will mind hehe

skinink:

If I remember correctly the county Toledo was in was a blue county.

2004-12-29 01:50:06 PM
Mark you calendars for:

1) Hilarity from the out-of-towners who don't have a clue that this is an excercise
2) The right wing nut job that tries to defend Toledo single handedly against the invading UN tactical team.

Yeah, that was the Rangers. They weren't in cammies. Just wanderin' around woods and backroads with automatic weapons in the car.

Not that the Marines are a whole lot safer. The number 1 cause of death in the marine corps is training accidents, and the number 2 is suicide. Go figure. If the guy to my left doesn't take me out, I just might do it myself.

These stats are pre-GWOT though. Maybe the iraquis have taken one of the top spots.

2004-12-29 01:53:18 PM
What a shame, all those marines firing blanks.

Check my profile. I've been to the MOUT facilities. I'm not saying this is a good idea. I'm saying that if you want someone to snipe them, I'd prefer you tried it yourself.

/Seriously.

2004-12-29 01:57:03 PM
Green Berets, actually. I don't think that's the same thing as the Rangers. Anyway, it might actually be an improvement that they are telling people about their plans to practice in Toledo, Twizeek. I mean, considering that they've been doing it in secret in North Carolina for years and years.

2004-12-29 01:57:21 PM
How exactly does one train with downtown Toledo? Isn't it hard to load?

/Marines to train in downtown Toledo instead of "running around the woods"

2004-12-29 01:58:13 PM
TwizeeK
Why don't ya make it Iraq? There's a bunch more over there? Oh, it's the ones with blanks you want. Gotcha.

2004-12-29 01:59:33 PM
I'd love to participate in this kind of exercise. I dont think there is too much danger placed on the public by allowing the Marines to train inside a city, any city. Twizeek, the particular Marines training in Toledo are essentially the same as the National Guard. 1/24 is a reserve unit. Jimbo: why do we have to be psychos?
//Marine that listens to NPR

WHY DONT THEY JUST USE THE OLD FORT ORD SITE IT WAS THE BEST MOUNT SITE I EVER TRAIND IN. IT HAD SEWERS FIVE AND SIX STORY BUILDINGS AND GAS STATIONS

2004-12-29 02:01:40 PM
Office_despot: I'm aware. They have also trained in New Mexico, Texas, Georgia, and porbably almost every other state. You are correct, this is an improvement, as I understand it there have been several times that this training has occurred w/o warning, scaring the living shiat out of the local citizenry and para-military organizations.

The fact that the marines decided to annouce this one doesn't make it any better that it's happening at all.

/So much for the idea that the US has a defensive military.

They just need to put signs like this up all around Toledo.

2004-12-29 02:05:24 PM
gis for urban warfare

2004-12-29 02:05:26 PM
MOUT (Military Operations in Urban Terrain) towns are great training but they dont allow for the random behavior of civillians. Urban warfare is, I dare say, exponentially more dangerous that battles across fields or in jungles. During our introduction to MOUT in combat my squad suffered 60% "casualties" at the hands of a lone instructor. My fellow Marines need all the training we can possibly get to survive in areas of the world where rude strangers want nothing more than to see us die.

2004-12-29 02:06:39 PM
Ahaha, Iraq. I don't need to go to Iraq, like minded Iraqis are doing it for me. With improvised weaponry or archaic weaponry.

Mission accomplished my ass.

So, who should we invade next.

/If it was up to me, Texas.
