Lights, not fire. Still a great pic. I think I saw the movie "Fire and Ice" too.

Some say in ice,
Wrong, biatch,
the world will end in fire

BackAssward:

Funny, heh. Its one of the first rules a photographer is to not put your subjects in the center.

However, the next rule you learn, is that rules are made to be broken when appropriate. I see boring, amateur photographs all the time that use the "rule of thirds" to the point of monotony.

Most pros actually center their stuff often if you check out wedding, product, advertising... but this is because they know when center is right.

Reminds me of why I hate sodium lights so much.

2004-12-29 12:49:33 AM
yeah the rule of thirds is more a suggestion, by breaking that rule he adds a element of symetry that probably helps the picture more then it would have to put the subject on the thirds line

GIS, "fire and ice:"

Damn straight I would...

gilliam: You've got it.

I would photoshop out those things (snowflakes reflecting the strobe?) on the center top though. They're distracting. Being a newspaper though, such retouching is usually a no-no...

Holy sodium vapor, Batman! Talk about yer light pollution!

2004-12-29 12:53:49 AM
it would be alot cooler if the city in the back ground was actually on fire.

That's much cooler than some dumb frozen tree and faux fire.

It's a picture of one of the Mars rovers coming across its discarded heat shield. Quite a long haul...keeps going and going and going and going...

I would also think to get rid of the grass near the tree, though that is iffy because it helps ground the tree, but at the same time it also draws away attention from the main subject. Though unless he was carrying around a lawnmower there isn't much he could do.

/Still probably not qualifed

BackAssward [TotalFark].

Photographer has subject matter in the center? That's like, so not how you do it.

I know man, and I learned how to do it in the booklet that came with my digital camera, and remember reading about it in 'how to draw comics' or some shiat like that...you want the target of the image to be 1/3 from the left side or 1/3 from the right side.

Picture was cool, but not that cool. And now that I'm a regular farker, I assume that every pic I ever see, anywhere, has been PSed.

Sandelaphon,

Yeah, I found that picture a while back when I was just searching the 'net for pictures of babes to put on my desktop. So I found that one and resized it to fit my display, 1280x1024.

Very nice picture indeed.

At least Sandelaphon's second linked image was located in a very decent folder. Thanks for pointing that out, Blhack.

I was most disappointed in what I found upfile of mine.

Hey, at least it's a boring nature photo in color, as opposed to that Ansel Adams stuff which is boring nature photos in B&W

I never understood what was so great about that guy's pictures...

BarkingPumpkin: Damn straight I would...

There's times I really hate being male. The nature pictures are amazing, something I'll never see the like of in real life. ....yet I keep scrolling up to the girl.

Bah ... Rule of Thirds is more like a Suggestion of Thirds. Symmetry is quite appropriate for a photo like this. Lone subject, simple surroundings, high contrast...

//no, not amateur porn

Yup to hell with the rule of thirds, first thing I learned in photo class is that the traditional rules make nice photos, nice boring formulated compositions, if you like that... overesxpose, underexpose, jump, scratch megatives if you like. But for a newspaper photo, that rocks, I wish I saw the shot...

Ok fellow farkers & farkettes, let me share with you a quick story. I am a professional photographer. I belong to various associations (Professional Photographers of Rhode Island, {PPARI}, PPANE, {New England}, and PPA {AMERICA}. I entered an image earlier this year titled "Fire and Ice", in a competition against other pros. To make a long story short, it wasn't that great, and it got a crappy score. But I am flattered by this uncanny coincidence which I belive to be: Someone saw my image and improved on it. If this person didn't get their inspiration from my crappy image, then this is the strangest coincidence I have ever seen. Here's my 2 year old image...

P.S.- Kudos to the artist, I have no harsh feelings if this is the case...
