Who pays for this stuff? Is that what all those Sunday pass-the-offering-plates things are for?

Why not ? After all the Italian Police's using Lamborghinis.
Lamborghini's become the official sponsor of Police and God.

I have a request... could use a laugh today.. can someone photoshop the pic of the Pope above, turning the toilet into a wacky dragster type car racing down some raceway or busy road?

The thought makes me laugh, what can I say?

The Vatican is not "in Italy." The Vatican is in Vatican City ("The Holy See").

Ironically enough, this story is about Italy. No, wait, that's exactly what you'd expect. I have no idea what your comment is about.

Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

HappyDaddy, Vatican City is in Rome, which is the Capital of Italy. So, he's right about one thing. The Vatican is in Vatican City(which is the entirety of The Holy See), which is in Rome, which is in Italy. The nation may not be called Italy, but it's completely contained in it.

I assume it's these.

2004-12-27 09:42:47 AM
Happy Daddy: The Vatican is not "in Italy."

It's within the borders of Italy, so technically, it IS in Italy. However, it's supposedly under its own law, which can be argued is not entirely Holy.

I think what boohiss was getting at is that Ferraris are made in Italy; which would be like saying that The President's Secret Service men (and women) drive around in golf carts made by Ford (which would be really funny to see btw).

I always though that the Vatican City was it's own country. Can anyone confirm (or deny)?

Vatican City is "in" Italy in the same sense that Monaco is "in" France. Which is to say, it isn't.

Obviously a threat to US security ... I suggest a preemptive strike ASAP.

"People who come here don't need to worry. They didn't really need to worry before but now these little cars can give a greater sense of security," said Salvatore Festa, chief of Italian police who protect the area around the Vatican.

Well...that's comforting. No doubt about that. Nothing gives me more comfort than guys driving around on golf carts. Plus...it gives them a sense of dignity as they approach you at a whopping 30kph!

2004-12-27 10:00:47 AM
HappyDaddy is 100% correct. The Vatican City is a separate political entity and although it is geographically located in the area of Roma, it is not governed by Italy.

When I lived in Italy, I was always really impressed by the fact that the Italian police get to drive Alfa Romeo sports cars (I'm a huge fan of these things). I must say, my people know how to do it up when it comes to transportation!

Does anyone else think the cart pictured above could be a bit cooler looking, though? Maybe I'm just silly but I was really hoping it would look like a miniature Countach.

Yes, that's exactly my point.
Of course I know it isn't *in* Italy in the geopolitcal sense.
My point is, why is this news? Unless there's some Pope Fark fetish I don't know about, it's about as interesting a headline as "German government uses BMWs to get around."
That's all I'm trying to say.\

/would be funny to see the Pope scurrying around the Vatican in a little golf cart though

I drive a Countach once. My neighbor(who is an avid Porsche fan--usually has at least 4 of them) brother had one. He drove it there once I drove it. I didn't like much actually. The engine sounds great. However you can't see shiat when you are in the car---except in front of you which I guess is the idea. The clutch is extremely stiff too. Still I was not complaining. My neighbor had a 930 turbo at that time too---that was the fastest model out at that time. Now that was a blast.

I don't know, jondular . I read part of that link. If it is half as true as they are tring to make it out to be, the book would never have been published. In fact, that guy (the author) would be dead.

Pope John was a golf cart driver,
three hundred and ten years old,
had too many sacrifical wines one night,
and wrapped himself around a telephone pole.

Langdon had never seen St. Peter's from the air. The marble faade blazed like fire in the afternoon sun. Adorned with 140 statues of saints, martyrs, and angels, the Herculean edifice stretched two football fields wide and a staggering six long.

Well, you can't just be seen driving any old thing, not when your dressed like this.

Actually Texas is not wholly contained within the US. It is bordered by Mexico..
A better example would be Utah, or Colorado. Those are wholly contained within the US..

Just sayin'

boohiss, I think this is news because it's more like saying that american police are driving around in the golf cart equivalent of vipers.
Lamborghini, although made in Italy, is still a very inaccessible item for the vast majority of Italians, not to mention financially not feasible for law enforcement.

I think the whole point here is that it's a bit ironic that this religious institution that supposedly cares for the poor and sick is spending all its dough on designer golf carts. However, I would not be surprised at all if Lamborghini gave them a big price cut.

2004-12-27 10:40:17 AM
Would you people calm down? No where in the article does it say that The Vatican bought the carts. It does say that the Italian police bought the carts.

If you can find an article saying that it was, in fact, the Swiss Guards who bought the carts and that they paid full price then post that link. Otherwise, spare me the Catholic bashing and the prissy moralizing.

Look, the thing costs about 9900 Euros, which works out to about $13,500 US. We just bought a very low-key utilitarian work cart (electric) at work, at it was $10,000 US. The fact that it's a Lambo-made item is irrelevant...its cost is right in line with what we're paying here.

Those of us in the audience who are Catholic would appreciate it now if y'all would shut up bashing the Vatican on this. Those carts didn't cost any more than what your local college and university groundskeepers are using to putt-putt around on, and they'll serve a useful purpose.

Pretty sad when the best thing you can find to whack the Pope over is the cost of a GOLF CART. Some of y'all are pitiful.

HappyDaddy

If the Vatican is in Vatican City and Vatican City is in Italy then the Vatican is in Italy.

It's kinda sick of all the gold and priceless stuff they own. Also their long histroy of death, rape and thievery along with government manipulation. So much blood all for this stupid nonsense.

Wake up people, stop believing in fairy tales. God is real, but don't entertain stories about it.

2004-12-27 10:52:37 AM
Just for the record, Vatican City is a country, and it is also the world's smallest country at 0.15 square miles.

What are you talking about? Now, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure if a state is within the border then it is contained in the US even if it's on the outside. What kind of distinction are you drawing? Texas is completely within the United States.
