If they can do this, then why doesn't my sprintPCS phone work right without dropping freaking calls all the time?

Vger

It's a shame that this little amazing piece of engineering will reach the nearest star LONG after the aliens have had plenty of time to judge our civilization from "Jenny Jones" signals beamed out into space.

Now that cracked me up!

Only 2 million years to the next rest stop... Just pinch it.

2002-03-03 01:12:49 AM
The reply they received: "hi, this is Pioneer 10. I'm afriad I can't get to the phone right now, so please leave a message after the beep. Oh, and by the way, resistance is futile. Prepeare to be assimilated."

2002-03-03 01:13:20 AM
That is so bad ass...

2002-03-03 01:14:29 AM
Happy birthday, Pioneer 10! 30 w00t!

2002-03-03 01:15:44 AM
I bet the baud rate is less than 3 bps.

2002-03-03 01:17:14 AM
i wonder if theyll get it back in a few hundred years

2002-03-03 01:18:47 AM
You can hear Pioneer 10 at this address:

http://www.ienni.net/pioneer.html

Kinda cool but I'm easily entertained.

2002-03-03 01:19:25 AM
Hey we think we're big time but we don't even know where the heliosphere for our own farking sun is and it's taking us 70 years to find out.

2002-03-03 01:28:19 AM
Adonbary: It's kind of like listening to a broadcast of the Atomic Clock. Fun for about 30 seconds. :)

2002-03-03 01:29:30 AM
Amazing to think that they designed this thing to "only" last so many months ...

2002-03-03 01:35:55 AM
That's so cool! WEEEEEEEEEEEEE

2002-03-03 01:49:02 AM
NOW they've done it! The Borg now know about us and will be here in weeks!

2002-03-03 01:49:47 AM
Thats way cool! Pioneer 10 was designed to operate for 10 or so months and it celebrated it 30th. b'day yesterday.
Wish I could say the same for my Yugo.

2002-03-03 01:53:07 AM
I was close, it's 16 bits per second.

2002-03-03 01:53:39 AM
i wish i could say the same for humanity's chance of exploring space

2002-03-03 01:56:31 AM
we are going to die on this planet.
We're going to keep driving SUV's, we're going to keep eating mccrap and the only people able to go into space, other than people smart enough to build a farking space station, are the new kids on the block, or whatever they are called these days.

2002-03-03 02:02:31 AM
to bad it can only beep back

2002-03-03 02:21:49 AM
I guess NASA knew the difference between a meter and a yard in '72.

WE are, but our descendants aren't.

Besides, some of us are immortal. Did you ever think of THAT, mister Smartypants???

Wrong. YOUR "civilization". Thankfully they will get the quality BBC signals before the lesbian makeovers - we turn dogs into hogs, my brother is my lover, my dad is my husband and So I shot a few people with my Gun - does that make me so bad? episodes of Jenny Jones.

2002-03-03 03:02:55 AM
w00 w00! Pioneer 10 LIVES!!! Too bad they don't make them like that anymore :-/

2002-03-03 03:13:39 AM
"Jenny Jones"?? That's nothing. Wish I could see when the aliens see Britney Spears. Urg...

2002-03-03 03:34:11 AM
Farkanoid: You know, Americans can go a whole day with out comparing ourselves to England.

2002-03-03 03:34:19 AM

Like all that Benny Hill you guys blasted into infinity?

Don't get me wrong, I like England and all that, and I grew up on Benny Hill reruns here in the states, but it's a little frightening to think of what the aliens will think of us when they see the door closing on the sign to spell "knickers". Nevermind the endless repetitions of 'Yakity Sax' that went out eith it.

They'll probably dig the little bald guy though. He rocked.

2002-03-03 03:44:50 AM
God Bless Benny Hill and all the boobies he showed me.

May he be pulling the great hose-pissing joke in the sky.

2002-03-03 03:52:29 AM
It's funny that many Americans think we still watch Benny Hill (I never did) and think that everyone lives in London (hey, do you know a guy called John who worked in the local pub there?)

There was a TV programme over here about American tourists visiting the UK. One girl was convinced we eat squirrels so she actually brought a whole case full of American food.

Actually, I love Americans really. Although you should stop sending TV shows like COPS and John Bunnell specials over here - it makes Americans look crazy.

I said you guys still watch it? News to me. I haven't seen any of it in years myself.

I lived in Lodon for six weeks in 1994 for a summer semester of college, one of the best times I've ever had. Did just enough for the classes I was taking and was there just long enough to start not feeling like a tourist. One of the best big cities in the world, IMHO. Maybe someday I can get back and see some of the rest of it...

Actually, I love Americans really. Although you should stop sending TV shows like COPS and John Bunnell specials over here - it makes Americans look crazy.

But we are crazy. And hey, several of the 'Most Insane Car Chases' shows they show on Discovery Channel and TLC are almost exclusivly on English roads, so it's not just one way.

2002-03-03 04:03:23 AM
so farkanoid, you can pick and chose the the brit TV that you like, but every US citizen is represented by Jenny Jones? Face it, we're both stupid.

ps I love you guys too.

2002-03-03 04:05:20 AM
And it's late here and I'm rambling. I apologize for this inadvertant threadjacking. Please resume discussion of interplanetary and interstellar boobies. That is all.

2002-03-03 04:50:51 AM
I think you guys miss the point in this US/UK debate, and that is the we both rule night and day over the Aussies and the Canucks. Though "Crocodile Dundee" and William Shatner both have their entertaining moments.

2002-03-03 06:15:27 AM
Anyway, I think the gist was that we Americans still watch Benny Hill. I can't wait to see what gets popular enough over there to shoot our way next. I though Ab Fab ruled the universe!

PS I think chutney rocks, too.

Comedy in general has gone down hill over the past 5 years. I'm not a fan of American comedies (apart from animation), they just tend to irratate me. And the UK hasn't produced anything good for a while (with the exception of Coupling - that was hilarious). I still haven't forgiven Red Dwarf for turning to slap-stick comedy, grr.

Seems the only funny things worth watching these days are animations: 2DTV, Simpsons, Family Guy (the best) and Futurama (may she rest in peace).
And UK panel game shows: Buzzcocks, They think it's all over, Have I got News For You and Shooting Stars.

I'm also really pissed Ali G sold out with the mother of all seller outers, Shaggy. And you can tell his film's gonna be utter shiat because his sketches were turd anyway. His funnyness came from his improvised stuff like his interviews, which obviously won't be in the film.

I should really stop writing now, I'm making myself angry.

Fawlty Towers.

Don't mention the war.

Agreed - if you take back Ann Robinson from "The Weakest Link"- and take back "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" and "Who's Line is it Anyway?" while you're at it.

On the other hand, I seriously hope when the aliens make contact, they request a meeting with the Ministry of Silly Walks.

2002-03-03 10:03:34 AM
Wedge: you're welcome for all the boobies.

2002-03-03 10:15:23 AM
Typingsux: I realize I'm a little late answering, but the reason your Sprint PCS phone sucks is that Sprint PCS uses the ass-biting CDMA system, whereas every other country standardized on GSM, which actually works.

Switch to one of the US phone companies offering GSM. You'll thank me.

2002-03-03 10:36:26 AM
I admit "Who's Line is it Anyway?" is a big pile of wank, but I like "The Weakest Link". I want Ann Robinson's job on that show, it's much more amusing watching the host laugh at the contestants when they get an answer wrong rather than saying "Aww, it's good, but it's not right"

2002-03-03 12:11:16 PM
Ab Fab is well old.
However, they made a new series of it recently, I stopped watching it after the first 2 episodes tho, wasn't anywhere near as good as it used to be.

2002-03-03 12:15:23 PM
Did you folks in the US ever get to see "Men Behaving Badly"?

2002-03-03 12:23:06 PM
For something built in the early seventies, this probe is built much better than what NASA sends up nowadays. I wonder why.....

2002-03-03 12:25:17 PM
Dr_Satan : I think Comedy Central was going to pick that show up here in the US, but I don't know if that idea ever flew. I saw some commercials for it, looked humorous.

2002-03-03 02:41:39 PM
Hopefully, if/when aliens pickup our broadcast signals, Mystery Science Theater 3000'll be one them. Who knows? Maybe they'll spare us whatever horribly fate's instore for us, just to have more episodes produced. I dunno.

2002-03-03 04:06:49 PM
And the UK hasn't produced anything good for a while (with the exception of Coupling - that was hilarious).

So, you've never heard of the The Office? Tsk!

2002-03-03 04:34:28 PM
This show was great...

2002-03-03 05:10:59 PM
Bmr68: Yep. I have been trying to find an episode or 2 of that show to download for a couple years now. That and Hitchhiker's Guide. Now THAT was a good show. There were just too few of The Young Ones episodes made. The show was going on great, funny like nothing since and then BOOM the guys drive over a cliff in a stolen double decker bus. I still go "What was that?!" when I think of it. I mean, why? I miss Neal and Adrian and Mike and that other guy. At least we got to see Mike in AbFab. AbFab is too eerie to watch. It is like seeing the internal monolog that went on inside my ex wife's head.
