Cosby has been playing this riff for years...

Best moment from "The Cosby Show"(courtesy IMDB.com)

[Theo has received a "D" and is explaining why he should not be punished]
Theo: I mean, you're a doctor, Dad. And Mom is a lawyer. But I don't love you any more because of that! So if I just want to do something normal with my life, then maybe you should accept it and love me because I'm your son.

Cliff: Theo... that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life! No wonder you get D's in everything! You're afraid to try because you're afraid your brain is going to explode and it's going to ooze out of your ears. Now I'm telling you, you are going to try as hard as you can. And you're going to do it because I said so. I am your father. I brought you into this world, and I'll take you out!

Do you see us white people defending all the hicks who think Elvis is alive and who worship him? No, you don't. We make fun of them. Black people need to try making fun of the idiots that perpeturate their "race". If your defining attribute in your life is something you can't control (race, sex, etc.) then guess what happens? You will be associated with it.

Couldn't have said it better. Most whites laugh at trailer-park hicks. They are the shyte portion of the white race. I'd like to see more black people denouncing the shyte portion of the black race. Which guys like Chris Rock and Bill Cosby do superbly, and which I only admire them for.

Exactly. You don't see white people going around saying "Well, he likes Limp Bizkit and not Slayer, so he isn't white anymore" or "He wants to be a inner-city social worker and not a tennis player, so he can't be white like me".

There's nothing wrong with a man such as Bill Cosby expecting and asking for more from his own race.

Late to the game, but I just want to get this out there.

I can't wait until we stop thinking of everybody as "different." Black, white-- we're all people. Myself, I only see two groups of people in the world: smart and stupid. The smart people go out and work for themselves, not waiting for their problems to become someone else's. Stupid people are the exact opposite-- everything needs to be handed to them, they can't solve their own problems, but rather require huge efforts from others to solve them, and of course, nothing is ever their fault. EVER. I'm glad to see that most of you, my fellow Farkers, are smart people. You'd rather get a job and buy a cheese burger than wait for food stamps and yell at "the man."

I say we all just shut up and work. The smart people should cast off the deadweight (non-working governmental programs, ie. all of them) and move forward as a country. Let the smart people succeed, and the stupid people fail. Maybe after people stop caring will the stupid people be compelled to do something for once.

Yes, I'm white. Yes, I go to college, and a good one to boot. I worked my ass off throughout high school to get here, and I sure as hell deserve it more than some ghetto thug dropout. I agree wholeheartedly with what Bill Cosby is saying, but I think he's talking to the stupid people of the country. He's saying "Hey stupid people! Us smart people hate you, and here's why."

/ Saw Cosby a year ago. Friggin amazing

I'm white, grew up in a white town, all that jazz. My favorite musicians tend to be black, but that's not the matter at hand. I don't know what the black experience is like in America, but I do understand it sucks ass to be poor and hungry. So on that tip, I'm going along with Bill Cosby and a line of other VERY important black men and women who'd say the same damn thing as him. Every successful black person I read about says the same thing: damn the torpedos and make it on your own merit.

Many of the Sergeants at basic were black, and a lot of them were the most driven people I'd ever met. If you knew the daily schedule of a basic training instructor, you'd be amazed how they kept it together and got so much done. I had mad, mad respect for those men. I looked up to them more than anyone else there. I came to understand that they worked as hard as they did because of factors like being black in America, and coming from rough backgrounds.

"It's this, or nothing. Glory or death." That's what I picked up from them. It affected my own career goals in the military a lot - and I'm a white dude from the suburbs. I know for a fact I could've coasted my whole life. My childhood wasn't hard. I had every opportunity to set cruise control, work in a cubicle until I was 65 and plan my retirement in a tract house with a 2-car garage. It would've been easy to not do sh*t with my life. But who were the role models, besides my family, to want more and go after it? Black men. I'd have to say the most influential figures I've read about or met have been black men.

Before I go, take one example. This man named Gil. I met him 2 years ago, after I graduated college. I only met him once, but I spent a couple hours with him. He was laid up in the house, and had to use an O2 tank to help his breathing. So he set up his basement to be a den for all his entertainment. He was pretty computer savvy, and was constantly getting movies, music and such from wherever. Anyway, I talked with him about 2 specific things: his tour in Vietnam, and the beginnings of his career. Gil served in 'nam, as I said. While he was there, his platoon got sacked, and he was separated from his unit. Alone, and in the jungle, he made his way back to post. Stayed in the forest for about 3-4 days, eating nothing but onions for food. When he got back, what happened got reported, and eventually he was commended for his survival. As he should've. He did what he was trained to do, and succeeded.

War stories aside, he talked about what he did to open the door after graduating college. He told me how he went to each "door," and banged hard as he could on each one until one opened. Gil was driven, every bit as driven to have a good job and make a nice home for his family as he was to survive the jungles of Vietnam and return to his unit. I only met him once that day, but it had an impact.

Ah well, I'm rambling and most of you would prefer an old fashioned left v. right flamewar, so I'll let you get to it. I was just saying Cosby's words are true and I know people just like him from my own experience.

One love.

bill cosby is saying what white people, for some reason, arent allowed to say.i watched a comedy special the other night with the black guy from the movie new guy, dont recall his name.anyway,he said attractive and successful African-American at least three hundred times in the show, explaining conversations he had with his friends and referring to his friends as such. now, you tell me what adult any of you know that carries on a conversation in this manner? its ridiculous.the majority of blacks destroy everything in their wake and cry racism when theyre called on it.spare me, i dont care about the problems of the blacmman, im white i work and i pay my own way.the man is holding me back..my assssssssssss. the sad part is you listen to a conversation by two black people of any age whatsoever and they all speak the same. its actually cool to be illiterate and unintelligent. its frightening and funny at the same time, you see nobody needs to keep them down they do it all by themselves.

If Billy Cosby's white on the inside, then so is Chris Rock. In the two HBO specials I've seen of his he has lots to say about the behaviour of a lot of black people. The mostly black audiences are killing themselves laughing but Rock also has a dead serious message.

2004-12-24 02:14:04 AM
Definitely awesome flamewar.

The Cos is right: get off your @$$ and get educated. Why is this so debated? News flash: THIS APPLIES TO US ALL. He's telling this to blacks because he is black and among many areas with blacks, most aren't staying poor due to their own lack of education. It's one thing if you grow up in El Salvador with no opportunity for education and then come here and work hard. It's another to throw away your opportunity for education and do nothing with you life. This applies to all races, no matter who you are.

The problem is that in black areas (referring to urban ones), society as we know it is disintegrating faster than it is in more white areas. Society itself is, but the urban areas are going much more quickly. Yes, education is good, and getting off your @$$ and doing something with your life will do wonders. But society IS falling apart because we no longer have a focus, whether as a society or as a race.

This issue has me so riled, that I have to make a comment
that is as short as possible, otherwise you'll have
chapters to read. Here goes:

1) My family has been middle-class since I was about a
teenager (Single parent household too...well done, Mom!)

2) I grew up feeling alienated by blacks b/c I was
apparently "trying to be white" in school. Also alienated
by some whites for the same reason. Had/have more white than
black friends in my life in no small part due to this.

3) *I* paid for my own college degree because I felt that
was the only way to truly appreciate the value of a degree.
(Up to 3 P/T jobs held at one time) Now working as a DBA and
plan to go to school in 5-10 years for my Master's.

4) I have old grudges against the blacks who used to tease
and shun me for being different. (I have a grudge, a temper,
and several years of martial arts experience just
HOPING to meet up with some of them. Yeah...that
crap sticks with you for a long time...in my 30's now)

5) Agree with quite a bit of Cosby's tirades...just wish he
didn't base it solely on the poor...those stereotypes and
attitudes are everywhere...

6) If *Cosby* has done "nothing" for Black America, then
I doubt anybody's done a thing for Black America. How much
more can one man do?

7) There *ARE* more "Black leaders" out there, but they
aren't as outspoken and inflammatory as Jackson, Sharpton,
or Ferrakhan...which makes them "not so newsworthy" in a
news system that bases the majority of its stories on
the most inflammatory personalities it can find.

8) GuinnessDrinker
Most whites laugh at trailer-park hicks. They are the
shyte portion of the white race.

I have to say that's a cruel statement, IMHO. I think
calling any part of a society "shyte" is the worst thing
you can do...they're already devalued in every way, shape,
and form. Let's not believe that "trailer-park hicks" are
the cause or banner holders for racism. They didn't own land
and have slaves. They don't create "glass ceilings" for
women and minorities. They aren't heading the political
organizations of this country. They just get the blame
because they're an easy target that can't defend themselves.

Okay...I'll stop there...

/Needs to do some pushups to decompress...

Kenny, 17, a onetime stick-up man, puts it plainly. "Cosby is ... talking about me holding up my end of the bargain. Listen ... I robbed 'cause I was hungry. If he's going to put food on my table, if he's going to give me time to pursue education vigorously, then fine. But if he's not, then I'm going to hold up my end of the bargain and make sure I get something to eat."

"Times are different" than in Cosby's heyday, said Sonia, 20. "Back then even if [men] worked at a factory they'd get up every day and go to a job in a suit. Nowadays ... most black males don't have good enough jobs."

Sounds like the message is really getting through. , indeed. Since when was pointing out the obvious heroic?

You're the ones who were all surprised that all the random school shootings are perpetrated by white kids.

During school? No. On the playground after school? Yes.

Were you suprised that Lee Malvo and John what's his name were black? I sure as hell was. I totally expected the angry white man. Who knew?

There are several cultural dynamics that make the experience of being white or black "unique". Unfortunately, the negative dynamics that make the black experience what it is appears to be (I'm as pasty as it gets, so I'm sure I will be considered totally unqualified to speculate on, or comment about the "black experience") in many cases, the alleged reprehensible lack of/resistance to responsibility or civility in that community.

Don't get me wrong - I am acutely aware of the fact that when these same elements combine in poor white communities, in places like Jasper, TX for example, what we get are Aryan whack-o's who are incomparable to street thugs in their lack of moral character, or sense of human decency. Just click those ruby slippers together and say "Timmy McVeigh" three times if you still don't get what I'm saying here.

As a white guy who hates the black/white "thing" (as Steven Tyler calls it), I guess I should summarize my thoughts on this whole deal:

The Cos' is right on about the people he's speaking about. If you're poor, or you're black, and you aren't engaged in this type of craptastic living and excuse making, then get over it and on with your life.

Poor White communities are extremely effective at turning out sadistic terrorists. Cold, inhuman monsters with the capacity and the will to mindlessly murder hundreds of people.

Poor Black communities are extremely effective at draining their young people of hope and ambition, and turn out a disproportionately large number of petty criminals.

Sadly, we are not socially evolved enough to debate poverty, and race with out qualifying the criticism of the "other" race with criticism of our "own". One day that may change, and then maybe we'll be able to address the actual problems, instead of dealing with our own problems by pointing out those of the "other" culture.

It's late, there are a lot of incomplete thoughts there. Hopefully some of that made sense, if not, oh well...

Sorry. Go "Uncle Tom" Cosby.

TaoKodr Well said!! I especially appreciated #'s 4 & 5! Bravo! Tho as a woman I cannot, uhm how to say, right previous wrongs through physical strength.

I can only look upon the heartless B's who took such glee in tearing me down in Junior High and High School and think - who's better off? Who's got a future? Me who worked my A$$ off all these years. But guess what? I'm going to retire in some comfort. I don't have to worry about nursing home fees later - neither do my kids.

What kills me about young people is how being big and bad "NOW" is so important that they can't see their nose despite their face - is that the way that expression goes - sorry tired but can't sleep.

A great book that goes pretty deep into this topic. He also shoots about 3.4 bajillion holes into this 'the Man is keeping me down' stuff.

Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America, John H. Mcwhorter, Ph.D.

To make trekkiebear happy, YES, there are white people out there who will throw out your resume because you name is Shaliqua or similar. That's why we have lawyers. Sue the ever-lovin-shiznat out of them, then retire. YES, there are racist white people to teach their children to demonize, demean and belittle blacks. But ya know what, these white people are a pretty small minority of the white population. Itsy-bitsy you might say.

The simple truth is that the vast majority of whites couldn't possibly care less about skin color. Seriously. Unless we want to bang you. Even then, it's just a matter of flavor. Like trying a new flavor of icecream.

This thread reminds me of a roommate I had in the Army. His name was Darcell. He used to hang out with us honkeys every once in a while on weekends. Why shucks, he even went to a metal bar with us a few times. Never once, at any time, was his race mentioned, brought up, or even thought about by me, my friends or any one at the places we went. Then one time, out of the blue, he tells me that almost all the other black guys in our company gave him crap about hanging out with the white guys. Darcell told me the only time he ever felt discrimination was when he was around the black guys.

Go figure.

I really wouldn't go that far, and I live in probably one of the most tolerant areas in the country. I would say the vast majority of whites wouldn't overtly turn someone down for a job based on skin color.

However, I would say that the majority of people of ALL races have preconceived ideas of how people of different races behave and apply them to people we meet without knowing anything about them but the color of their skin. It's only natural, we like to find patterns and fit them, whether or not there's really a pattern there. It's how our uber-monkey brains work.

Im a black male. From my point of view welfare only hurts the black community. So does rap music. I grew up in poor black areas and most poverty srticken blacks are proud of the fact they grew up in the hood, because of rap music. I did myself. Thinking there was somthing to be proud of about gangs and hoes being a crook. Like it made you strong are tuff. But theres not, trust me. Untill you re-educate the community there will be no change. Theres a difference between being ignorant and being dumb. Alot of black teens just dont belive they can be somthing more than a hustler and thats got to change.

albtraum - hip hop appearance and slang IS mainstream

Where? The convenience store? As a customer? Not as an employee, other than at a music store. As casual attire, knock yourself out.

trekkiebear - In response to your diatribe:

I want to see the thread where someone ADMITS that they threw Sheniqua's resume in the garbage regardless of her qualifications.

Nope. The company I work for (job 1 of 3 I may add) is hiring people who can operate a keyboard and breath at this point (growing).

I want to see the thread where someone ADMITS that they don't stand next to black people in elevators because it makes them uncomfortable.

Not usless the have bad BO. But I would care if they were black, white, brown, or flashing neon colors if they had bad BO in an elevator, I wouldn't stand near them.

I want to see the thread where someone ADMITS that they don't talk to the black people at their job and don't want to because black people are loud and lazy and stupid and probably got the job through affirmative action anyway, but not because they earned it.

Wrong again. The black people I work with are jsut like the white/brown/whatever colored other people I work with. They work.

I want to see the FARK THREAD where white people actually ADMIT they call black people n*i*g*g*e*r*s in their jokes and every day speech when black folks aren't around because you know it DOES happen and black folk know it or else how would your kid learn how to call MY KID that?

I don't use racially derogatory terms UNLESS I'm joking with my black friends, and I still don't use that term. So my 5 year old and my 3 year old have never heard that term in my house, ever. Have your kids ever heard that term in your house, ever?

I want to see the FARKING FARK THREAD where someone ADMITS that maybe they have the wrong idea about so-called "minorities" and that maybe just maybe some people out there INTENTIONALLY and PURPOSEFULLY on a daily basis descriminate against black people in jobs, housing, investments, insurance, car sales, and just about anything you can name.

No and yes, you've finally got me. I don't have the wrong idea about minotities; we're all Americans. Most work very hard, some skate along, and some don't even try. You don't have to be {insert your superfically determined race her} to be a lazy, no-account, good-for-nothing.

Yes some people do discriminate against black people. Some pick Jews. Some pick Hispanics or Asians. Some even pick white people to discriminate. I don't associate with any of them, nor will my children while I have a say so/control the purse strings (so to speak.)

When I see that farking thread with all your white mea culpas then MAYBE I'll start believing some of this crap. BUT don't sell me on the "complete personal responsibility of individual blacks" until you all get honest about some of the racist, discriminatory, farking crap you pull every day.

Never from me. I work 3 (count them - 1, 2, 3) jobs and my wife works as well. All this so my kids can go to a private school (Catholic, as is my wife and 25% black, for those of you small and shallow enough to care or count those things.) My wife gets to spend the summers off with the kids because I work 3 jobs; it's worth it to us. We sent our kids to a private school both for the religious aspect as well as the fact it is an enviroment where all the parents care about their kids.

I'm a black man (actually a halfie) from outside the US. I'm from the Caribbean and live in a very Americanized society. Though where I am is a British colony, proximity to the US kind of dictates where we import things from.

I can't speak for the rest of the Caribbean, but in my country it's roughly 85-90% Black or mixed population and I have to say that the majority of us do not understand Black americans.

I lived in the US for a few years and I've traveled in that country quite extensively and most of the black people I've met there I feel nothing but annoyance with. How can people with the opportunities that abound in the US so utterly and completely waste them? How do they perpetuate the same cycles generation by generation, destroying their own communities and turning their children in to brainless killers or victims?

The first thing Black people have to do is tear down their projects and build real communities. The ghetto mentality is poison. We have it here too and *unfortunately* it's growing. It inspires laziness and greedy, backstabbing, entitlist behavior. It's a road that leads nowhere but down.

Take it from a black with a perspective of being outside with the ability to look in: You're going nowhere, Blacks in the US. Until you start to respect and encourage *real* ambition, you never will.

I think it was Spike Lee who said once that when he was a kid, speaking well, dressing well, having a good job and a good education was something people aspired to and admired. He thought it was sad that those same things are now considered 'selling out'.

Danger, irony follows:

I was chatting with a local purveyor of illicit chemicals and he and his friend were both biatching about how cheeky kids were today. Even as 28 year olds, they remember when their friend's mother/aunt/random-adult would dope-slap them for acting up or swearing.

These guys, allegedly the baggy-pants wearing assholes, thought just the same as Cosby. I found that illuminating, but I'm not quite sure what to call the thing that is revealed by the brighter light.

There used to be real black role models in the 60's (and white ones too).

Funny, how most of the ones who gained real power rest under headstones now.

Yes, a lesson was learned: put only expendable asshats who won't be taken seriously in positions of visibility. Otherwise, they'll just get shot.

So, saying a lesson wasn't learned, is simply wrong.

Hate to include a touch of religion in this mess, especially on such a secular occasion, but wasn't one of the sermons on the mount about teaching a man to fish thus feeding him for life? What Cos is saying is "quitcher biatchin" and fix your problems without causing other problems. Because you have a need does not remove you from your responsibility to provide to other's needs as well, like the need for security and civility. You get what you give and everyone always looks at what they get before they look at what they give. Even this time of the year...
To those taking Mr. Cosby's advise and making a difference, I'd go well out of my way to help them, but to the ignorant punk who has to rob to eat, well isn't he the same dipshiat that said school wasn't going to get him anywhere....? Yeah, listen to him...enlightened...

Although, I do also want to teach a course in "when the time comes to riot, take the bus to a nice part of town and destroy something tasteful."

It is galling however, to see so many people say "anything a black person earns has been given to them, so they never earn anything."

So....why earn anything if you're never going to get credit for it?

BTW, the United Negro College Fund supports the United Negro Colleges. If you are white and want to go to a historically black college, apply for a "minority" scholarship offered by the UNCF to that institution, and then stfu.

Hmm, actually, they are also a gateway for the gates Millennium Scholars Initiative.....which includes as partners "the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, the Organization of Chinese Americans and the American Indian Graduate Center Scholars."

Maybe I won't have to pay as much for medical school, yay!

For everyone that disagrees with the Cos', you need to read this book:

Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America

It's written by a black professor in California...speaking the truth, just like Cosby.

There sure are a lot of victims in this country. This is not so much a white vs black thing. I see both sides carrying equal proportions of people that love to feel victimized.

Self-loathing is the in thing!

TaoKodr Well said!! I especially appreciated #'s 4 & 5! Bravo! Tho as a woman I cannot, uhm how to say, right previous wrongs through physical strength.

Heh..of course not. Nor am I advocating violence
(As much as I'd *LOOOOOVE* to sometimes ;-) )
Still, martial arts teaches to use things other than
strength to defend yourself.
(I finally managed to convince my sister to start training,
so I'm gonna try with you ;-) )

I'm going to retire in some comfort. I don't have to worry about nursing home fees later - neither do my kids.
Awesome! God be with you, and good luck to you!

That shiat sticks with you and does you way more harm than it'd ever do those guys, even if you ran into them and beat the tar out of em someday.

I know...believe me, I know...I skipped my high school
reunion in part because of what I thought *COULD* happen.

Well, old wounds can die hard sometimes...
but I'm surviving and doing fine in spite of them.
They aren't worth the effort, but I'm always ready just
in case (MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA)

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all!
