If by "forces" you mean the forces of nothing-is-free-and-you-have-to-work-your-ass-off -if-you-want-to-get-ahead, then yeah... there are forces, indeed.

downstairs wins!

Personally: look in the mirror.

Politically: There's some people who are trying to screw you. Don't let people tell you otherwise, they're lying.

2004-12-23 04:37:50 PM
Cosby's only saying what everyone else has been thinking for several years. More power to him.

2004-12-23 04:38:31 PM
The obvious solution to combat these evil forces aligning against us is to tax the rich more and give it to everyone else. By rich, I mean families making over 50K/year. They don't need all that money and comfort. The misery should be spread around equally. After all, equality is what democracy is all about.

"You don't know the power of the Dark Side, StomachMonkey -- it is useless to resist."

that's why we need this guy

Personal responsibility should be a "duh" thing. Like no duh.

The Problem is that the Limbugs, Con Hannity's et. al., then use it like a bludgeon anytime they need to fill 20 more seconds of air.

So folks don't know how to take what the Cos has to say. But he's right.

2004-12-23 04:39:43 PM
He's pissed, and he's saying what everyone is afraid to say: Believe in yourself, even when no one else does.

Yeah, but the Left can't say that sort of thing. Just look at some of the things the Democrats say about Justice Thomas or Dr. Rice. It gets really offensive when you see who they DO hold up as examples - Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

If I were black, I'd be pissed enough to vote republican.

2004-12-23 04:40:44 PM
Can't argue with Bill, but his words ring "white" within the Black community, therfore his words will be discounted.

/yes, racism continues to thrive - on the other side.

From VH1.com biography:

William H. Cosby, Jr. was born in Philadelphia on July 12, 1937. The son of a maid and an absentee father, he grew up in abject poverty, ultimately dropping out of high school to join the Navy. After earning his diploma through correspondence courses, he won a football scholarship to Temple University; while taking classes during the day, he tended bar in the evenings, where his easy ability to make customers laugh resulted in the decision to pursue a career in comedy.

In case you feel it's relevant.

Bob55:

I know of a black man who was ridiculed for being intelligent or considering going to college. I believe he's now a MD, but he's one of the rare few that can fight against the negative images of education in the black culture.

Being picked on for being the smart kid is hardly a black-only phenomenon.

And, fact is, there are more poor whites than blacks last I checked. Yeah, there's a higher percentage of blacks that are poor, but in raw numbers there are still more whites. Personal responsibility is important for all of them, not just the ones of a certain color.

Oh, and I refuse to call blacks "african americans" when I am referred to as white. How retarded is that? I don't mind being referred to as white at all, but why waste the syllables on them when they don't on me?

The good thing about Cosby speaking up is it's not only to the kids. He's calling out the parents to start paying attention. For the parents to take stock in the behavior of their children who they're supposed to be raising. Black or white, parents are not being responsible and it's a huge issue which is much easier to ignore than to talk about.

2004-12-23 04:44:14 PM
Boy, smackem yackem, you sure are bitter that some people are better off than you are. I have zero sympathy for you.

You are just jealous that some people are more successful.

Yeah, some people start off in worse off places in life, (that's called life chance) but there isn't anything you can do about it but pull yourself up by your bootstraps... something you seem to think isn't realistic. Come on man.

I'd like to state for the record that this is not, nor should it be, a Democrat/Republican bullshiat argument. In cr@ppy, ghetto neighborhoods, there is no such divide.

It's a human issue, methinks: Believe in yourself when no one else does.

/getting exhausted by the Demo/Repub flamewars

Being picked on for being the smart kid is hardly a black-only phenomenon.

I second this motion! I grew up in a rural, all-white area, and I was the "smart kid." And yeah, everyone hated me, and picked on me. Dumb, ignorant people come in all colors.

2004-12-23 04:46:00 PM
Weaver95: Again with the gross generalizations. You know which side of the spectrum I'm on, and to me, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are little more than racial extortionists. Not admirable at all.

Wow. There is hope for the world.

Great job Mr. Cosby. You are a hero.

Merry Christmas...

"But the whole pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps American/Republican Dream thing is generally bullshiat."

Sorry, but no. This "American/Republican Dream thing" you refer to can and does work. "Work" is the operative word here. You will have to work your tail off and it doesn't come easy, but it can be done. My ancestors came here to the US with no more than a dollar to their name and managed to work their way up from poverty to living a decent life. They weren't wealthy by any means, but they weren't living in the gutter asking for handouts from anyone. I and millions others are doing the same thing now and we've managed to do pretty well. Anyone who says otherwise isn't paying attention.

2004-12-23 04:50:00 PM
McDork It is a human issue - I totally agree. And not to flame the political side - just to enlighten you on what many people see, myself included, is that the Dem party has used the poor and downtrodden for years with promises that never come to pass. The worst thing that ever happened to the black woman was welfare. A trap that was nearly impossible to break out of.

As was said earlier, it's education. And personal responsibility.

2004-12-23 04:50:25 PM
I see the problem as kids having kids, if your parents are stupid chances are so are you. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree.

2004-12-23 04:50:43 PM
Not admirable at all

And yet, the likes of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are held out as examples of what the Democrats like to see in minorities.

How are they supposed to get a fair shake from the DNC when they face that sort of image? Let's face it - there is a definite lack of real, serious role models for the black community. And a good chunk of their leadership figures are little more than freakish cartoons. I don't care who the black community ultimately supports, so long as it's their choice AND they stop letting buffoons insult and represent them.

"This "American/Republican Dream thing" you refer to can and does work. "

It works when our economic setup leaves the poor without medical care and when we actively encourage low-wage illegals into the country. Are they going to be bad for society? Oh well, we don't live anywhere near where they live.

2004-12-23 04:52:49 PM
That kid who needs to rob because he has no food? I'd be happy to help him figure out where to go to get food stamps. If his 17-year-old ass is still in school, he's probably eligible for free hot lunches (or even breakfasts) as well!

where is im not rick james biatch? We need him to call all the white farkers racists for being in support of cosby's anti ignorance, self-responsibility tour.

That is crap that the American Dream doesn't exist. Hell my family is proof of it. My dad has a brother and two sisters. My grandfather delivered bread for a living and all his kids went to college. All make a good living. Look at Robert Johnson, the founder of BET and owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, the guy was born dirt poor but he did it. I could give countless examples.

Agreed, what_the_farking. My sister and I got reduced lunches at school after our mom provided proof of a low-income.

/wait, that means our mom cared.

To blame the plight of inner city blacks on white society is to a large extent accurate. To place the responsibility for inproving the circumstances of blacks soley on the same white society that opressed them to begin with is foolish.
At this point, if you can't or won't do it for yourself, it ain't gonna happen, and ghettos will remain the slow-motion death camps that they are.

Yeah, that was a huge copout. Kids don't generally need to steal for food. It's more likely he was stealing for spending money.

Actually, though, if the parents are letting the kid not go to school (and many kids wouldn't go if not forced) and are say, selling their food stamps for crack, it could be plausible. However, in that case, the parent is at fault, not the state, and it just goes to show that the Cos is exactly right in this case.

So either the kid was lying about why he steals, or was too dumb to blame the real source of the problem, his parents.

McDork

Whoaaa..
in the hood, there is a HUGE divide...Republican vs Democrat....
not to add fuel to the flame...but work in the inner city, and you will see very clearly.

I would love to be a full out democrat, its the right thing to help, and be progressive,

except reality of what i see daily, simply wont allow me to.

government run programs are the core of the hood, and corruption is the norm...and the amount of Bias and hatred is almost unbelievable.

at least in Milwaukee & Chicago's inner city

/not that my post matters, but i wish most people could experience the hood first hand...its an eye opener

A 17 year old shouldn't have to work to feed himself. He should be going to school and working part time should be an option.

The democrats have given the blacks everything they've ever earned

And the key word there is 'given'. Every time a black man/woman goes out to do something for themselves they are called names by the Left (uncle tom, or 'being white' are two i've heard often). The DNC *DOES NOT* want blacks doing things for themselves - they want to keep giving things to the black community, make them dependant on the DNC for everything. That way they'll always be able to count on their votes no matter how out of touch with reality the DNC gets.

2004-12-23 04:59:09 PM
ol' Bill "Uncle Tom" Cosby. he has the michal moore disease. i have no respect for those who would rather babble that shut the fark up and do something.

2004-12-23 04:59:19 PM
And there it is...I was waiting for it:

The Liberal Media Strike Back!

...and try to muddle, lessen, and obfuscate his message by showing 'Coz don't know what the streets are like' and giving examples of urbanites who'll counter him only because it'd be too painful to say "Yeah, he's right".

2004-12-23 05:00:17 PM
Cosby is one of the smartest men in America, if not the world. He speaks the truth, and the truth hurts people. The Black Summit he did with Jackson was absolutely astonishing.

He should be president. I would vote for him in a heart beat

2004-12-23 05:00:27 PM
Being a bleeding heart liberal, I still think people more control than they realize, they just relinquish it. You can live your whole life thinking "the man" is going to keep kicking you down, so you might as well cheat him out of a dollar OR you can unite and put your minds together and make something real happen. It's up to you.

2004-12-23 05:00:38 PM
from the dissenter of Cosby in the article: "If he's going to put food on my table, if he's going to give me time to pursue education vigorously, then fine. But if he's not, then I'm going to hold up my end of the bargain and make sure I get something to eat."

He still doesn't get it. If someone doesn't "give" you something you're going to rob for it. When does the asking for a handout stop? Probably when they realize the whole get rich or die trying is just about as far from the truth as you can get.
