he called off the ceremony in a cell phone text message to his fiancee

thats so cruel...

2004-12-23 10:00:22 AM
Kinda cowardly if you ask me- but for some reason SMS seems to be an ever growing medium for breaking up with people... Lawd knows I'd expect at least some exit-interview sex or something along those lines....

2004-12-23 10:21:22 AM
The bride is apparently entering into litigation over this.

SMS is strange. Here is America, it's mainly the territory of gossipy 14-year-old girls.

Elsewhere in the world, it's like some sort of legitimate form of communication between adults (this case notwithstanding).

Maybe someone can explain this phenomenon to me. I just don't get how spending 2-3 minutes typing in a message is better than just calling the person for 15 seconds.

2004-12-23 10:27:24 AM
Guess there needs to be a "followup-followup" tag.

2004-12-23 10:27:38 AM
my god... think of all the pain I could of been spared ..if only text messaging had been around when I was a kid....no more slaps when I'd break up with someone by saying "well actually your sister/roomate/best friend/mother is more my type"....

finalyl technology delivers a real benefit!

Because you don't have to initiate a lame conversation along with it. Get to the point and you're done. Also, it is non-intrusive. I'm no 14 y/o girl and I am in the USA, but it's my preferred form of communication.

cowardly yes, but all in all i don't think it should be anyones concern that he dumped her. he wasn't happy and he ended it.
the thing is that this has gone frome people disagreeing with how he did things to costing him his contract on the team, which is retarded. i fail to see how it 'tarnishes the states image' when it's just an issue between 2 people that shouldn't have been together. i don't see how his job should have anything to do with his personal life..

but maybe its easier saying "mind your own damn business" from the western world

A dick move to be sure but I don't see how one thing has to do with the other. His commitment issues affect his ability to kick a ball around?

Text messaging. Back in my day we broke up with girls the old fashined way. Via e-mail.

I think SMSs are a good thing. Here in Germany, you get assraped on the per-minute charges when using a handy, so it's cheaper to use SMS. Samples of the steamy SMSs that my wife and I send to each other:

"Hi babe, I'm walking the dog at the park. Could you pick us up after you get off the train?"

"Könntest du mal Milch holen, während du unterwegs nach Hause bist?"

It's articles like that that keep me single. Going on 14 years now and loving
it. Every once in awhile when I feel like I am missing out on the joys of
marriage I would go visit my friend who has six kids and the desire fades in
about 5 minutes, Now I have this article to read whenever the urge to co-inhabit
starts to waif over into my common sense.

This guy is my hereo. Text the b---h. Over 1000 people at the wedding. God if
that ain't a clue.

//Thank you Malaplace

re: dontmarry.com & nomarraige.com

Wow, funny how a few bad experiences can cause such bitterness. How over the top can you be? Of course there are some biatchy women and wives out there, but i know many women who have gotten totally screwed over in divorce settlements as well. It works both ways. Not to mention that most of that crap revolves around a few overly used stereotypes about upper and upper middle class women. Most families now days can't get by on just one income, and many women feel socially pressured, and pressure from their husbands to stay at home to be "good mothers." I would feel sorry for guys like this who are so completely clueless about women, but it's their own fault for picking dumb flightly princesses instead of real partners.

/agrees with him about the excessive weddings though...

Sir Cumference the Flatulent:

Here in Germany, you get assraped on the per-minute charges when using a handy,

You know, I live in Germany, but I'm not German, and I've always wondered what kind of practical joker introduced the word "handy" into the German language. It's an English word but no English speaking person on the planet uses it to describe a cell phone. What gives?

Anyway, regarding the player, there is a lot more to this than the short article conveys. It seems a bit odd that he's disappeared off the face of the earth. Does anyone know if he even sent that message or did it just come from his phone and no one has seen or heard from him since?

Even if it's nothing sinister, people that disappear suddenly without foul play being involved usually have some kind of mental or substance abuse problem.

Lastly, they can't "terminate" his contract unless they have a damn good reason, the FIFA player's association shows up with an disel powered asskicking machine whenever a club tries to do that. What they can do is buy him out of the contract by paying out the majority of the salary he would have earned over the next two years - minus bonuses of course.

Yeah... being humiliated in front of 1000 friends, family and 900 fans of your fiance is sad.

Being dumped with no word on your wedding day is sad too.

But all those presents going to waste... oh the humanity! I can really feel for her now!

I have no idea, but here a "Telefonzelle" is what we would call a phone booth. God, German is a biatch to learn...

I am sure there are many women who have gotten screwed over. But we aren't
talking about them right now. That's for another thread. It's all about US at
the moment so let us continue please without interrupting and changing the
subject and moving the focus away from the true meaning of this discussion. I
believe that could have been the single most important text message that
gentleman could have ever sent. I have dated many women of all shapes and sizes
and most of them started out being the nicest, sweetest, lovable gals. Then
something happens. I don't know what it is but they get possessed. They don't
live at my house and have only known me for a few months but they want to start
nagging about stuff that doesn't even concern them. What would it be like after
we got married and they lived there! Yeah I leave the seat up on the toilet. So
what. I don't care how you leave it when you get done. I'm a big boy and can
lift the ring up or the lid. Yeah those are the same socks on the floor that
were there two days ago. So what. It ain't a dead cat. No big deal. Yep..that
pizza was in the fridge last week. It's still good. Nothing fuzzy on it yet. You
see...you women need to let boys be boys. Don't sweat the little things and just
think of us as small children and all these things we do are cute. It's the
nagging that always gets to me. I try to ignore it but you gals won't let us.
You are all pros at it. If girls could make a living by nagging they would rule
the world. Sometimes I think they already do...they got me wasting my time
typing this. God I've been had.

//going to warm up that Pizza now if I can just find a clean plate

There's no way a woman can get screwed in divorce court. The man is instantly the villain in court, no matter what happened during the relationship. Women want to be equal when it suits them, but want preferential treatment otherwise. Full disclosure: I'm not married and have never been, but when I was in college, I worked as a clerk in one of our local domestic courts. I'm almost certain that marriage is not for me.

I'm single. Its what I wanted.
My friends feel bad that I am not married (ofcourse, they are married).
My friends that are married with children feel bad (but they know I can leave their place and not have to change a diaper, clean up puke, ...).
I just have to watch my verbage around the lil ones.

What is even nicer, is that My sis and older bro have kids. So, I am not obligated to breed for family name sake. I'm the bachelor uncle. I have the "cool" toys, fast car, nice home, debt-up-to-here, friends that are great, girlfriends that visit once in awhile, and yet...no nagging, no divorce payments.

Even better is vicariously. I've dated 20-something babes that even though they were one-to-three week lasting gigs, my married friends can't do this without losing the castle and family. So, I keep them happy with my stories. Ofcourse, I have to watch and not be stupid either. Death is but a bad sex partner away.

Do you know Ive met several girls that wanted kids but no dad? Hey, if the ammo fires, best of luck.

/Watched Elf lastnight.
//Hope no Will Farrel shows up at my work in 20 years!

2004-12-23 12:40:14 PM
I think everyone is missing something here.
"Hasmawi has since gone missing. Efforts to contact him by his family and 23-year-old Norlida have drawn a blank."
From what info there is in the article, he is apparently still missing. If someone else had possession of his cellphone, couldnt they have sent the message just to throw everyone off?
Until Hasmawi shows up, they have no idea who sent the text message, whats going on with him or if he's even still alive.
Before everyone gets all upset about him leaving his bride on the altar, it may be a good idea to see what actually happened to the fellow.

I dunno, I'm thinking my oldest sister is begging a judge to tell her where she can cram her alimony suit.

It's like this - she's in her mid 30's, meets some 17 year old guy on IRC, decides she wants to abandon her 6 and 12 year old daughters for a year and go explore the possibility of a relationship with him.

Fast forward a few years, her husband has bought her a house that she picked in another town, and then she divorces him. She's on record asking the judge "What if i don't want to see them that often?" with regard to visitation. Yes, the father has full custody, she didn't want custody at all.

Fast forward to the present, her only living expenses are utilities and food, yet somehow she can't support herself. Something to do with her being really lazy. She believes she has various imaginary neurological disorders and paid out of pocket for an MRI which proved that she has none of them.

And now she wants her ex, who remember is paying the mortgage on her house and is the sole care provider of her children, to have to pay for her upkeep.

So, what exactly is she going to tell the judge? Her stated intention is to tell the judge that she can't work because she has a brain disorder that her MRI indicates that she doesn't have. She knows she can't claim that the MRI came out positive because she told everybody that it didn't and we're all willing to testify against her. I hope the judge tells her to get a friggin job. A court ordered public apology to her daughters for being such an asshat wouldn't be out of line either.

What does his marriage (or broken up marriage) have to do with the team he plays for? So if you're engaged to someone, and break it off, you can be fired for it?

Smells like "future litigation", to me.

I'm male and I find your habits of leaving 2-day-old socks and pizza boxes sitting around to be disgusting.

Funny how women have to go out of their way to disclaim Andrea Dworkin and the man-haters, but similar exception does not need to be made by men for her male equivalents.

Some day, only gay people will get married.

2004-12-23 01:27:19 PM
1. I remember an article about a year ago: Under Muslim law/tradition, a man must say "I divorce you" three times, and a cleric said it was OK to send the "IDU" via text message.

Maybe this guy was following those guidelines.

2. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a dowry involved, and any lawsuit filed by the bride involved recovering the dowry.

3. What does his marriage (or broken up marriage) have to do with the team he plays for?

Maybe that's the reason he decided not to get married

*nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*

Seriously, the guy was fired from the team for violating the "morals clause" (conduct that reflects badly on the team image) in the contract, kind of the same tact the Yankees are using to void Giambi's contract after he admitted using steroids
