"I went to call him, and there were no footprints. I kept on calling for Gizmo, but there was no Gizmo."

Poor little Gizmo!
My brother's Chihuahua was nearly carried off by an owl last fall. That was one ballsy bird.

And around America hundreds of small yappie dogs are shoved outside by fed up spouses...

Small yappie dogs are no better than cats. Sorry cat owners.

I have tons of red tailed hawks and a couple of horned owls on my property. I can sit and watch them "work" the pasture for hours on end. A hawk wrestling a snake in a tree is like some kind of bizarre ballet...

We have one which likes to hang out in the courtyard of the building at work. I managed to snap a photo of it as it was on watch -

Magnificent bird.

Excellent pic! I keep trying to get one of the owls but they are a biatch to find when perched and they don't let you get real close. The hawks for some reason are a little more comfortable with people...

"I kept on calling for Gizmo, but there was no Gizmo."

p.s. I will find Gizmo

I love seeing hawks on the side of the highway, waiting for their next meal. On Thanksgiving I saw a bald eagle! It was HUGE. They're pretty rare around here, but are making a comeback.

/has aspirations to be a falconer in her lifetime

We used to have a sharp-shinned hawk living in our backyard in NJ. My brother discovered this fact when he was coming home from a mountain bike ride and the thing shot out of a tree, dive-bombed him, circled a few times and then retired back to the tree.

Vici...they have a falconry hunt out here in January...I told them that they could come out and hunt my land this year...Hope they do! I have never been but I hear that it is teh cool!

small dogs suck.

my mother had a toucan that would ride around on the back of our wolfhound. i was too young to remember, but i have seen a pic. cool.

oh and for the record, a bald eagle can pull a moving 20lb salmon out of the water.

Not worried about my labradors getting carried off by birds, just shot by drunk hunters in deer season. But my sister just got a Yorkie, and as much as I don'tlike little dogs, that non-barker is growing on me, and I think she'd lose her mind if a hawk took her away.

This hawk needs a HERO tag.

Seriously, the only thing that could have made this article better is if the hawk had killed the owners too.

/Feeling the holiday spirit.

guess the owner doesn't need to worry about not feeding gizmo after midnight.

"Argall said there are 'plenty of red-tailed hawks in the area but they don't pose a very big threat.' The city also has peregrine falcons. Both are state and federally protected birds."

Weren't those red-tailed hawks that Mary Tyler Moore's coop in New York had been harassing? Why isn't the U.S. Attorney in New York filing federal charges for molesting protected animals?

/Just curious....

Hey man, that's the way nature works...speaking of, i wonder what hawk tastes like hmmmmmmm...

Quiz: which of these quotes was by a man and which by a woman:

"I couldn't have lost a relative and felt as bad as with this dog."

"He was my buddy."

Why isn't the lady a suspect? Hmmmm?

I wish I lived in a hawk area. I'd have hawk feeding partys!

/misses his piranhas

2004-12-23 01:26:17 PM
That sucks. I would be so sad if that happened to my weinerdog Peanut. She is 8 pounds and the best dog ever!!! Not yappy at all

two small(ish) birds moved into a tree in front of a friends place a few years ago. The problem was they considered the area their territory. His cat would get dive bombed if it went anywhere near the front yard, and this wasn't a small cat. The birds even circled around the humans if they came close. During the winter I guess they left but sure enough they'd be back in the spring time.

2004-12-23 01:29:19 PM
Whorey I thought everyone knew about de-feathering, i've heard it makes meat so much more palletable

2004-12-23 01:29:26 PM
I was driving along once and watched a hawk swoop down out of nowhere and snatch up a prarie dog in the blink of an eye. Cool shiat.

Motherfunker Not a bad idea.

Mmmmmmmm de-feathered meat

2004-12-23 01:32:28 PM
SideshowRaheem</b?

Actually, probably not a bad idea. I was merely spreading the Christmas cheer, but at the end of the day, it really is just spamming. Sorry :-p

So many babies, so few dingos...

2004-12-23 01:32:54 PM
The picture of the weiner dog in the hot dog outfit is just plain disturbing. Why must people insist on putting their pets in stupid little costumes? Do you really think your dog wants that?

2004-12-23 01:33:00 PM
Meh. When I was a military brat, living in the Philippines, we'ed hear all kinds of stories about Monkey Eating Eagles (12 ft. wingspan)grabbing human babies from people's back yards and flying off with the babies to eat them. They mistook them for monkeys.

Later, I saw a monkey eating eagle up close in a crate. HUGE birds. Look like teeny-tiny little black dots as they circle a couple thousand feet over the jungle, moving very slowly...

2004-12-23 01:33:26 PM
and I can't close a bold tag, either...ah, bugger it.

2004-12-23 01:33:40 PM
That's pretty awesome. Screw those stupid small dogs.

2004-12-23 01:33:48 PM

""He wasn't there," she said. "I went to call him, and there were no footprints. I kept on calling for Gizmo, but there was no Gizmo.""

Sorry, I'm too busy imagining the lady looking for Gizmo looked like Phoebe Cates.

Phoebe Cates, I said.

Too bad hawks can't swoop down and shred Republicans, Democrats, and other annoying little people. :)
