The same polar caps they have been photographing since the 70s?

Probe reveals crater on Uranus
2002-03-02 02:11:37 AM
Again? They find these things every few years now. You'd think they'd notice a pattern.

ice ice baby, duh-duh-duhdaduh
2002-03-02 02:12:47 AM
Why are you humming "Under Pressure" by Queen? That has nothing to do with ice.

I like suffagrate(sp?) city myself, the get up kids have a cool cover of it.

I was refrencing the Bowie collaboration for those who are confused.
2002-03-02 02:17:44 AM
Ok... I'm glad I'm not the only one who realized this is actually old news.
Hell, I go to a community college and even my geology text book talks about the ice on Mars.

On a side note, does this mean we'll be able to build colonies on Mars soon so we can shoot Arnold out of an airlock and see his face explode?
2002-03-02 02:20:27 AM
That movie was farked up. The part where Arnold tears that thing out of his nose makes me want to pass out. Although there is a chick with 3 boobies.
2002-03-02 02:21:58 AM
Hey, that's an even better idea!
Yeah, let's set up a colony on Mars ASAP so we can can chicks with 3 boobs everywhere!
Boobies all around my good friend!
2002-03-02 02:23:06 AM
The difference is that this time there is a really large amount of ice. Before it has been mainly trace amounts. The polar ice caps were theorized, but I think this is the first photographic evidence of such big areas of ice.

Probe finds stick up crater on Uranus.
2002-03-02 02:26:03 AM
Actually from what I know they are large amounts of perma frost that have blankets of ice above it that melt and reform with each "season".
2002-03-02 02:26:17 AM
You know if I wanted to read this article I could have easily found it at the Yahoo! main page. We need more original content here! That or more boobies because there are far too many weener posts these days.

Okay, I'll post it so no one else has to:

Not even gonna try to type the Austrian accent...

Hey isn't 2002?

Aren't we supposed to be COLONISING Mars by now?

Yes, weve known about ice on Mars for a while. but it was CARBON ice, frosen CO2. This is water. Where theres water, there can be (or already is) life. This is quite possibly the greatest scientific discovery of our generation people. Not only because weve found water on another planet, but in 18 months, it may be announced that single, or simple multi cellular organisms exist in that water. This isnt the real storey, this is the first step in a groundbreaking discovery.
2002-03-02 03:17:59 AM
Let's just hope when they find real life that they don't have William Farking Shatner announce it at the press conference. AGAIN.
2002-03-02 03:22:07 AM
Me and Bill Shatner can go to Mars! Who cares! Water=life! Terraform this biatch!!!
2002-03-02 03:36:53 AM
I need to find me a copy of SimEarth. I'm in the mood to terraform Mars now.
2002-03-02 03:54:53 AM
I remember playing SimEarth. I once totally destroyed all the lifeforms and caused an ice age. Then I notice a single robot appear in the snow. Soon the entire planet was crawling with self replicating robots which could not be killed. That definatly was NOT in the instruction book.....
2002-03-02 04:05:20 AM
You can't sell property on Mars, you don't own it. It along with all the other planets were claimed by some guy a good while back. Sent letters to the every country and the UN, he's the guy you gotta buy it from before you can resell it.
2002-03-02 04:10:39 AM
Hoosier: I think you're confusing SimEarth with the movie A.I.. I do the same thing all the time.
2002-03-02 04:11:58 AM
I wonder if that had anything to do with the nanites taking over my screen... nope, just my screensaver.
2002-03-02 04:19:14 AM
Jebediah: I was not kidding. I'm sure it was SimEarth because I even remember the earth was named "Gia". I would pelt the planet with commets, but them robots just kept a'multiplying.
2002-03-02 04:19:52 AM
If they DO find life, the fundies that are running things will probably cover it up.
2002-03-02 04:32:08 AM
Hoosier: There definitely are self-replicating robots in SimEarth, and the little bastards will take over your planet. I've never seen them come about the way you described, but I've only played the game on SNES, so I definitely haven't seen everything the game is capable of.
2002-03-02 04:34:45 AM
Is SimEarth similar to SimLife? I never played SimEarth but had the DOS version of SimLife. As far as I know they never made another version, even though it was a pretty good game. It sounds a lot like what you guys are describing though.
2002-03-02 04:35:37 AM
Hoosier: Here ya go. Found this on HappyPuppy:

There is another class of life that is not explained in the manual! It is the robot! Robots are able to survive everywhere, including on rock, arctic, and ocean! Robots can evolve sentience, too, but because they are already so advanced, they will not be able to have stone age, bronze age, or iron age cities! They will begin civilization at the level of the industrial age! To create robots, simply place one nanotech city of any life form and set an atomic test on it! Robots in the city will escape and live as separate life forms!
2002-03-02 04:38:14 AM

That's my uh, town crier impression or something. god i'm tired.
2002-03-02 04:58:10 AM
What we really need to know is:

Is Uranus bigger than the moon?

Huh huh huhuh huh huhhuh huh... he said "anus" ... huh huhhuh this sucks, what's on the other channel?
2002-03-02 08:52:06 AM

No, we've known that there is water ice in the northern martian ice cap for quite some time. This mission is extremely significant though if it finds water ice near the equator. This makes a human round trip to mars easier by a factor of 10, because you can generate the hydrogen rocket fuel on mars (we've already known we could generate an oxidizer (oxygen) from the martian atmosphere). Near the equator is more useful because it takes less energy to land and take off from there, because it's not quite as cold, and because the cooling/heating cycle is large enough that certain reactors have been theorized to work for removing the oxygen from the CO2 atmosphere. (they work on a day/night cycle).

If you've ever heard Robert Zubrin talk about mars express he talks about the importance of using resources on mars to make the mission lighter, and thus feasible. Even he planned to bring along the hydrogen, though, which isn't easy at all, it's slippery, cyogenic stuff.

2002-03-02 09:24:28 AM
...if they have ice, then they must have mixed Maker's and Coke, please...
2002-03-02 10:06:20 AM
"Boynton said scientists have several theories to explain what happened to the water that once flowed on Mars, with most believing that the planet was formerly much warmer."

lol wow what a brilliant theory.

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth;
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth!
