This would be more amusing if Michael Jackson had touched a "three year high".

/thought the headline was funny, if imprecise

Good headline, submitter.

three year old high would've been the best.

2004-12-21 03:48:37 PM
What is the best thing about farking 23 year olds?

There are 20 of them.

2004-12-21 03:48:37 PM

"Dow component Intel shot up 3 percent to $23.39 after Lehman Brothers raised its investment rating on the stock to "overweight" from "underweight...""

I'd be more interested in learng about stocks if they used sexual terms instead of weight terms. "And Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC.N: Quote, Profile, Research) soared 14 percent to $25.20. Smith Barney raised its rating on the stock to "Cleveland Steamer" from "Dirty Sanchez""

Please, tell me. I'm an idiot, explain to me.

Thank you delau!

I don't blame Bush for this. BTW, does anyone else think it is a bad idea to have individuals invest part of their Social Security payments in stocks when the US is on a kick to "hollow-out" (to borrow a term from the Japanese) its base of skilled labor and send it offshore?

2004-12-21 03:50:15 PM
Headline: eh. Shouldn't it say "touches three-year-old high"?

/still a stretch
//maybe I am just being obtuse

2004-12-21 03:50:32 PM
Headline is too much of a stretch for not funny.

Some dealers pointed to seasonal buying. Stocks typically gain in late December in a so-called "Santa rally" falling within the last five days of the year and the first two in January.

"We've got a seasonal bias going into the end of the year and into the first week of January, which should play itself out to the upside," said John Hughes, managing director at Epiphany Equity Research.

Nothing to see here.

2004-12-21 03:51:32 PM
great headline. funniest I've read in a while, if not ever.

2004-12-21 03:52:07 PM
If we had been able to diversify when this ponzi scheme was started, we wouldn't have this mess.

2004-12-21 03:52:13 PM
Heh, I read that as "DREW touches three year high"...

2004-12-21 03:53:15 PM
boohiss: Where are the Bush haters to say how much the economy sucks?

The stock market is not a sole litmus test for the stability of the economy.

2004-12-21 03:53:41 PM
I didn't claim to understand the economy. But if the headline was "3 1/2 year low" instead, you can bet your ass the Bush haters would be screaming about how awful he is.

To the contrary, Bush doesn't have godlike control over the stock market or the economy. So I'm simply making a point by acting silly.

2004-12-21 03:54:02 PM
Golf clap for the submitter.

2004-12-21 03:54:11 PM
Three year high? Ricky Williams surrenders.

2004-12-21 03:55:44 PM
that headline caught me out, i had no idea. v clever.

the whole 3 1/2 year thing means that bush has only passed his own record, so its not really that relevent

2004-12-21 03:55:58 PM
jcs83md: You're right. That would have been better.

Headline is not funny as it stands.

In related news....
Stocks continue to see "DontForgetPoland" coming and devalue themselves seconds after purchase.

2004-12-21 03:56:26 PM
It doesn't make as much sense in Michael Jackson's case, because you see, Michael Jackson instead touched a high three-year-old.

2004-12-21 03:56:34 PM
boohiss

Where are the Bush haters to say how much the economy sucks?

Right Here! If the economy is that great, then why are retail sales off 3% from last year's disaster?

/ Just wait 'til January!
// What is that sound?

2004-12-21 03:58:05 PM
Yeah, the economy's great. War sells and everyone's buying.

2004-12-21 03:59:18 PM
strangely, anti bush folks understand that the economy is cyclic... and even though but can't fathom how the climate could do the same thing...

oh, that's right - the economy only has a 1 year cycle, not a 65 thousand year cycle...

2004-12-21 03:59:40 PM
the whole 3 1/2 year thing means that bush has only passed his own record, so its not really that relevent

Unless you consider the .com burst, the 9/11 attacks, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I'd say it's not too bad of a record. Although I'd also say the president doesn't have much control of the economy anyway, and that the economy doing as well as it is is a testament to hard-working, optimistic Americans.

Merry Christmas, I'm out!

So why is the dollar losing value?

Because it makes our goods cheaper overseas.

So why is my large cap fund barely moving? Anyhoo, It's Bush's tax cuts and spending that will cause the next meltdown. I dropped half of my domestics and got into foreign real estate.

I work with this data all the time.

http://cbs.marketwatch.com/tools/stockresearch/updown/?siteid=mktw&dist=10rt&t ype=0&pgID=3&

Here is a public page with stock reccomendations! :O

Depending on how you look at it, the economy is either a) doing skippy or b) on the verge of incredible collapse.

just make sure you c) pay off all your debt.

2004-12-21 04:01:20 PM
Home ownership, consumer confidence, consumer spending, the trade deficit, the stock market, and the employment statistics....

If you can't get a feel for the economy from all this, then plan on wearing a plastic nametag till you're on Social Security (if it's available).

Anyway, these indicators, over the past 2-1/2 years, have all indicated a stable-to-strongly growing economy.

2004-12-21 04:01:28 PM
How amusing. Well, let's assume for the sake of argument that the president has a large influence on the DJIA, and let's also assume that the DJIA is a proxy for economic health. Obviously none of this is really true.

So it's hit a 3-year high. Who was in charge 3 years ago? Same guy. Let me know when it gets better than it was before he was in charge.

Imagine walking up to your boss and having this conversation:

You: "My productivity is up 10% from a year ago!"

Boss: "It's still down from the guy before you..."

You: "Uhhhhh... but I'm religous! God likes me the best!"

2004-12-21 04:01:54 PM
So why is the dollar losing value?

Because the economy sux. Sure, the Dow high proves that there's more dollars moving around then there have been in three years, but those dollars aren't as powerful as they were 3 years ago, either.

Admitted, the economy has been improving recently. But it's still not all that great in absolute terms.

2004-12-21 04:02:06 PM
The economy is baaaaaaad because I don't agree with Bush and his policies. Any good news is baaaaaaaad. Al Franken told me so. Come on, Bush had no more to do with this rally than he does with the sell offs. The economy is moving in the right direction, I'm so sick of people who don't understand economics.

2004-12-21 04:03:17 PM
Where are the Bush haters to say how much the economy sucks?
And where are the trolls who try to turn a non-political thread into a flamewar? Oh, wait, there they are!
