This fad can't pass soon enough. I'm sick and tired of hearing that everything is low card.

I swear that I just saw an advertisement for low carb breath mints. I'm waiting for some hardward store to start advertising that it carries low carb hammers.

Enough, already!

The whole point of Atkins (which they never mention for the sake of book sales and product tie-ins) is that our food contains too much refined sugar. All you have to do is cut back on sugar intake and eat in moderation. Any diet that drastically changes the way you eat is going to be impossible to stick with. Your dog only wants so much steak. Go back to eating pasta and bread, just don't eat it every friggin' night.

And run your ass around the block while you're at it.

2004-12-20 12:04:23 PM
And stop shopping at Victoria's Secret, husky girls!!

2004-12-20 12:32:40 PM
They're better off being fat than risking their lives w/ Atkins slop.

"Eating the same thing over and over. It was monotonous."

You mean, they didn't realize that to keep the weight off you have to keep on the diet... forever? It's not like the diet will "cure" obesity.

2004-12-20 12:49:00 PM
Oh, lookit all the skinny people comment that know so much about weight control.

Atkins works. It even makes sense. Yes, you'll be eliminating useless carbs from your diet for the rest of your life.

No, it's not boring.

2004-12-20 01:29:58 PM
There's a new diet out there, called the Northwoods diet. It consists of:

Eat breakfast.
Don't eat that midnight snack.
Eat whatever you usually do, but make your portions a little smaller.
Exercise a little more.
Profit, and get more 'tang.

In other words, use some common sense.

Seriously, anyone looking for a quick and easy solution to weight loss is going to fail.

Farkshower1972

Welcome to Fark.

Since when are greenlit articles considered trolls?

2004-12-20 02:00:56 PM
The FArQ is your friend, Farkshower1972.

2004-12-20 02:16:43 PM
Actually, I was referring to you as the troll, Kyosuke....

2004-12-20 02:18:43 PM
I'm very familiar with it, CineKal.

Last time I checked, I hadn't:

Attempted to hack, flood, DoS, or otherwise compromise Fark system security, or the security of any site mentioned/linked via Fark. Logfiles will be sent to the appropriate ISPs and law enforcement immediately.

Stolen or guessed other people's passwords, giving or loaning your password to another users (especially TotalFark passwords), or otherwise using or sharing accounts that aren't yours. Attempting to create extra accounts, or to use someone else's account, to evade bans.

Spammed. Worth mentioning twice.

farkshower1972: Kyosuke always defends Atkins. I don't think he's a troll, I think he's a fan.

"Many promoters of dietary schemes would have us believe that a special substance or combination of foods will automatically result in weight reduction. That's simply not true. To lose weight, you must eat less, or exercise more, or do both.

There are about 3,500 calories in a pound of body weight. To lose one pound a week, you must consume about 500 fewer calories per day than you metabolize. Most fad diets, if followed closely, will result in weight lossas a result of caloric restriction. But they are invariably too monotonous and are sometimes too dangerous for long-term use. Moreover, dieters who fail to adopt better exercise and eating habits will regain the lost weightand possibly more.

The most drastic way to reduce caloric intake is to stop eating completely. After a few days, body fats and proteins are metabolized to produce energy. The fats are broken down into fatty acids that can be used as fuel. In the absence of adequate carbohydrate, the fatty acids may be incompletely metabolized, yielding ketone bodies and thus ketosis. Prolonged fasting is unsafe, because it causes the body to begin to digest proteins from its muscles, heart, and other internal organs.

Low-carbohydrate diets also produce ketosis. As it begins, large amounts of water will be shed, leading the dieter to think that significant weight reduction is taking place. However, most of the loss is water rather than fat; the lost water is regained quickly when eating is resumed. Appetite, often reduced during ketosis, also returns when a balanced diet is resumed."

To each their own. I'm attractive, well-off, and thin...so I don't REALLY care.

Shame, really.

The Dr. Myrna diet:

Eat less and join a gym.

Too many people think that they can find some secret, easy, healthy way to lose weight. "If I just take these pills..." or "If I just drink pineapple juice before lunch..." or "If I just stop eating carbs..." or "If I drink these chalky shakes for breakfast..."

But losing weight isn't easy. At all. It takes some pretty hard work, mentally and physically. Besides, losing weight the "right" way will improve your cardiovascular health.

2004-12-20 03:30:10 PM
i heard a relatively smart quote the other day that for some reason I think was attributed to Jessica Simpson: "You can eat bread. Just don't dip it in alfredo sauce."

Fark could ban all the cocky pricks who post in here, but then it would be a very lonely place..... ;)

Phew!
Good thing my stock in useless herbal supplements, self-help publishing companies, and cold reading call centers won't be hurting.

Fat people are lazy. How is a lazy person going to put in the effort necessary to keep up an Atkins type diet after the prospect of eating butter soaked chicken breasts has lost its appeal?

2004-12-20 05:46:00 PM
"I'm attractive, well-off, and thin...so I don't REALLY care."

Jeebus, Farkshower1972 seems like a bit of a tool.

Atkins, South Beach and all the other true Low Carb diets work, despite what others might claim

losing weight is easy - i dropped 23 lbs in two weeks on South Beach and was never hungry. i'm tired of all these fat slobs who constantly make excuses for being fat. there is no excuse - you are a disgusting, unhealthy waste of space, who at the very least should have your Medicare benefits terminated from bringing it all on yourself. drop the twinkie and hit the gym

2004-12-20 05:46:40 PM
Good.
But not after the estate of atkins raked in millions off of his name.

/this post is atkins approved.

"The Dr. Myrna diet:
Eat less and join a gym."

Yes but that requires effort and a change of lifestyle.

They're all sitting around waiting for that magic pill that will lose the weight for them.

2004-12-20 05:47:21 PM
'bout time the Atkins fad is playing itself out. Any diet that would consider a ribeye steak covered in bacon a health food is more than a little bit suspicious.

2004-12-20 05:47:48 PM
Atkins is not recommended if you are preggo. If it isn't safe when you are with child, it's probably best just to pass.

Pass the taters.

Atkins is based on outdated 1970s science. Anyone who buys into it must be extremely gullible or illiterate.

2004-12-20 05:48:30 PM
Fat people also stink like cat piss!

2004-12-20 05:48:40 PM
Pfft, no one likes fat people.

Atkins is ridiculous. See username for details.

I recently lost some of weight. Two things, diet and exercise.

/who knew!

I'm just hoping there will be pharmaceudcial advances coming in the next few years that will allow all of us to remain at the weight we want.

That pill would be a miracle for millions of people.

What part of "fad diet" don't you understand?

2004-12-20 05:50:36 PM
My diet is rich in beer, chicken, Pop-tarts, nachos, red meat, etc. Generally, in moderation, with the occasional binge. Well, I also workout about 3-4 times/week too. 138 cholesterol, 122/60 bp ... I guess that's good, although the doc still tells me to cut down on the booze, late nights, etc. Wait until I start smoking next year ...

2004-12-20 05:51:35 PM
You know...it's time's like this that I really enjoy...aw, crap.
I was going to say something insensitive about how I maintain my slender physique and eat whatever I want with no worries of gaining weight, but that would be mean.

I got rid of 240 lbs of annoying fat by getting divorced.

2004-12-20 05:52:31 PM
I have an absolutely safe diet I used once to loose a lot of wieght and then I kept it off by just watching my diet and excersise after I lost the wieght. It was simple, I ate nothing but tuna fish and fruit for six weeks, and drank only water, and lots of it.

2004-12-20 05:52:47 PM
Working in the restaurant/bar biz, I meet a *lot* of Atkins folks. There is one common denominator: Atkins dieters exhibit symptoms of senility.

I'm serious. Short-term memory loss (they order, then don't remember ordering), aphasia (forget names of common objects, like "salt shaker" or "ice"), confusion (they forget where they are, or have trouble finding the sleeves of their coats when it's time to go).

There must be *somebody* studying this stuff, but ask anybody in the food-service business: hard-core Atkins people are severely impaired on basic life competency skills. I think it's gotta be the lack of carbohydrates causing a loss of fuel to the brain cells. Your body *runs* on sugars, NOT just proteins.

2004-12-20 05:53:03 PM
Farkshower1972's claim (attractive, well-off, and thin) is useless without pics.

Why is it all the ignorant people that have the most to say on a subject? So far all you have clearly demonstrated that the sum total of your knowledge of low-carb dieting was learned from watching Survivor and Buffy the Vampire slayer, which is probably where the sum total of all your vast knowledge comes from.

Low carb dieting works. It works for the same reason any diet works, you eat fewer calories. It's just a way of eating less and healthier that some people find more palatable than other ways, that's all. You all condemn it based on your ignorant pop-culture assumptions gained by reading teen magazine headlines at the checkout counter. You think Taco Bell and Burger King are actually reliable sources of information! Turn off the damn TV and actually take the time to find out about something before you start putting it down.

Almost all "diets" work, if you stick with them. Anything works, i.e. causes weight loss, that creates a calorie deficit. And whether you're fat or not, a low carb regimen is more healthy for you than your current eating habits.

2004-12-20 05:55:13 PM
disgusting, unhealthy waste of space,

the Atkins diet itself is hard on your organs as well. that and the fact most people on the Atkins don't get regular excercise. bad combination. yes it helps you lose weight, but healthy it is not.

change in diet and excersice is the way to go. plus the weight loss is exponential. muscle burns calories, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, even when you sitting on your ass.

2004-12-20 05:55:16 PM
When you're a huge tub of goo, losing weight is not easy. Your knees and joints hurt so much, you can't do the kinds of exercises necessary for a large loss of weight. A low-carb diet, is an easy way to lose weight quickly. Then, you actually feel good enough to, say, ride an exercise bike for an hour or play a competitive set of tennis. Then, you can modify to a more balanced, lower-calorie diet, but are actually able to burn off the calories you consume. This diet was designed for morbidly obese people who were pretty much bedridden, not for a 160 lb. housewife to avoid carbs to a point she's feeding off of her own muscle.

Low carb dieting works.

I refuse to follow any diet that takes a vital part of the human diet and tries to turn it into a four letter word.
They're called CARBOHYDRATES. Not carbs.
I swear, I'd be richer than Dogbert if I just decided to marke t the ELEM diet.
Eat Less Excersize More.
In other words eat what you want, but eat a shiatload less of it, and go to a gym once in a while.
To quote Foamy Squirrell "farking Fat Bastards"

2004-12-20 05:57:59 PM
Allright, I'll take the bait and throw in my two cents. A person's weight, as well as many other outward appearances (e.g. hygiene, clothing style, grooming, etc.) are a result of their self esteem. People become fat because they eat when they are depressed, then they become depressed because they eat; it's really a vicious cycle.
