"This is a gift to Norway," Gandrud said. "It's not a gift to a bunch of good old boys in Seattle or a gift to Torske Klubben," a Norwegian-American luncheon club.

The first rule of Torske Klubben is you don't talk about Torske Klubben!

2004-12-16 05:32:26 PM
From the desk of the editor: It's "million," not "Million."

Bad submitter! Bad, bad submitter!

(You aren't the only one -- there's been an outbreak of "Million" and "Billion" lately. This madness must stop.)

"This is a gift to Norway," Gandrud said. "It's not a gift to a bunch of good old boys in Seattle or a gift to Torske Klubben,"

This is the down payment so that he gets re-elected next year. It is a gift to the congressman at taxpayer's expense.

/John McCain has no right to talk about pork. He still owes the country trillions of dollars from the S&L scandal.

2004-12-16 08:00:54 PM
But wait, I thought only Republican affiliation was mentioned in headlines/opening paragraphs? And only when bad things happened? You know, that evil "liberal media" that didn't even mentioned all 3 Reps involved in the tax return thing were -R?

You know, I hate the Swedes as much as any good Norwegian should, but this is simply wasteful. Down with pork!

2004-12-16 08:04:05 PM
The line item veto would absolutely destroy the separation of powers. Basically what would happen is Congress passes a bunch of crap, the president picks and chooses what becomes law.

I don't think you have ever taken any sort of government course if you are advocating the line item veto.

Gary Gandrud, a Minneapolis attorney and member of the foundation's board, said that Norway made a 1976 bicentennial gift to the United States that helped create the Vineland Center, a training facility in Loretto, Minn., for people with disabilities.

If that's true, and the amount was roughly in the same neighbourhood, I can't see that this really is a bad thing. I mean, they did something nice for you guys, you guys do something nice for them. Seems to make sense. But, then, I'm not an American.

Whose fault is this really?

Here's what McCain has to say on the subject: http://mccain.senate.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=Newscenter.ViewPork&Content_id=1 441

The conference report before us today is 1,632 pages long and contains over $388 billion. It was put online very early this morning, and a hard copy was made available in the Senate cloakroom at 10:45 this morning. It is impossible for us to know exactly what is in this thing, and were expected to simply take the appropriators word that its all okay. Well, Mr. President, Ive been around here long enough to know that a bill of this size, put together behind closed doors and rammed through at the last minute, cannot be all good. And I know it will be a long time before all of the hidden provisions in this legislation are exposed.

Any hopes of removing pork from the budget left the window when Newt Gringrich left office. Say what you will about Newt, but atleast he took a stand against this crap, dammit.

Can anyone explain the difference between Swedes and Norwegians? Are they descended from different stock? Are the Nords less Socialist Utopia in outlook from the Swedes? And where do the Danes fit in?
Finland I have a better grasp of, since the inhabitants (Suomi?) are a distinct ethnic group from other Scandanavians.

In an episode of the Simpsons, they get a bill passed by paper-clipping it to a more popular, sure-to-pass bill.

Jay,

The Swedes are annoying assholes and the Norwegians are God's gift to mankind. There's the difference.

Don't forget about Norway. They're already part of the Coalition Of the Willing, or team COW, as they prefer to be called. Might only be doing air support or something though.

Number added in 1994, the last year of Democratic control: 47

To those calling for a line item veto in hopes of their congressperson or president showing fiscal responsibility to thier constituency and their country, I pose you a question: When was the last time you wrote your Representative or Senator to express your disdain at the state of political affairs? If never, STFU. If you can actually tally one in your favor, I congratulate you for making your voice heard in a positive way. Congress-people represent the voices from their district, make your opinion heard.

Let me pose YOU a question, then - and this is open to ANYONE that can give me a good answer:

What if, hypothetical Candidate A ran for congress on the premise that he would poll his electorate any time he was to cast a vote in congress, and whatever the electorate voted was the way he or she would vote in congress?

Would this work? If not, why not?

"But wait, I thought only Republican affiliation was mentioned in headlines/opening paragraphs? And only when bad things happened? You know, that evil "liberal media" that didn't even mentioned all 3 Reps involved in the tax return thing were -R?"

The media is far too liberal to make Republicans look bad.

Obviously, government by referenda is a bad thing, look at California. However, I would argue that if people against pork would write their Congressperson with the same frequency as old people and farmers, we'd be better off.

Not that I'm defending the money but I'm from Grand Forks and is surprises me not at all that the paper this links to has an anti-Democrat article in it. No matter how far the paperboy throws this paper to the left side of the doorway, it always lands on the right. ;)

2004-12-16 09:20:08 PM
I'll see that and raise you $50 million.

Specifically, the $50 million that Rep. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) got allocated to build a farking RAIN FOREST in Iowa.

Idiot. That would have built a half-dozen high school buildings for nearly condemned buildings in our state.

This is the same problem that exists with this budget (1632 pages)for our representatives and senators. The sheer size and complexity of the problems addressed makes it tough for the electorate to be well informed enough to make an informed decision. This can be expanded to many things. The type of government you are talking about exists or did until recently in the Northeast. It's a townhall type of governing in which everyone who shows up to the meeting gets to discuss the issue and vote on it. Unfortunately this true democracy had to go as soon as the population made it prohibitive to get everyone into a space and have thier say.

Thanks for the link....glad there's a politician saying what some/most of us are thinking!

Good info, even from McCain...

The fiscal year 1999 omnibus bill contained eight bills and I identified at least $11 billion in wasteful spending. The omnibus we passed for fiscal year 2000 consisted of five bills and totaled $385 billion of which $14 billion was pure pork. We rammed that bill through in late November of 1999 so everyone could go home for Thanksgiving - sound familiar?

Overly partisan politics has largely prevented us from following the regular legislative order, and that fact must change.

Here here!

/Now where did my government grant go....?

Whose fault is this really?

I see the fault in 2 places:

1. The politicians who vote for something without knowing what it contains (if a large bill is being rushed through so no one has a chance to read it, it will have something bad in it)

2. The voters for not caring when their Congress-person does crap like this. Being stuck in KS, I know Brownback's added useless crap to bills just to get his agenda through and I've done my best to vote against him (too bad KS + R = winner)

Further

Norway is, nor will (probably) ever be part of the COW. Norwegians are pretty pissed at Bush for this whole ordeal. However, we do have people in Afghanistan. We're understanding, not stupid.

For a list of all the countries in the coalition go here.
