"he had managed to finish off one-and-a-half bottles, or 35 nips"

Nips? Is that some kind of Aussie unit of measurement? A bad racial reference? A euphamism for female body parts?

2004-12-16 04:18:07 PM
Twenty-ish nips per bottle? Is it a shot?

2004-12-16 04:38:24 PM
He didn't know it was vodka!

I actually saw a .63 once. Have it on tape.... He shoulda been ded.

2004-12-16 07:36:25 PM
.462 is a pretty good average...

/should be given "hero" tag
//on second thought, dumbass would work too

Pshh. What a noob. Some guy on a christmas market in Chemnitz, Germany, recently blew .633 after going on a binge of "Gluehwein" (nasty stuff, cheap red wine with sugar heated up and served in a cup). Annoyingly, I couldn't find a link to an English language version of the story.

2004-12-16 07:37:12 PM
A bottle of bushmills...3 hours....130 pounds....worst night of my life(I think.)

2004-12-16 07:37:32 PM
"There are people who have died from a 10th of that amount," he said.

WHAT?

Dying from .04? You can still legally drive at .08 in WA!

And the legal limit of .05 is retarded. Most people couldn't have two drinks and drive with that limit.

2004-12-16 07:38:09 PM
driving drunk is like anything else ... practice, practice, practice.

2004-12-16 07:39:11 PM
wow I thought my .27 was good (so did the cops)that was weak.

2004-12-16 07:41:44 PM
adenosine I saw that too. Dead from 1/10 of a .46? I don't think so.

$20 to the first person who has some comment about this guy being a lightweight

Tucked into the end of the article, it mentions his BAL was trumped by a woman in 2002 from a country town (Orange, NSW). Nice one, sheila.

You could bottle his urine and sell it as beer!

(From what some ozzies tell me, Fosters is probably already doing this)

2004-12-16 07:48:03 PM
cdrstorvik is right, I had a friend who got pulled over and blew rigor mortis.

/he doesn't drive anymore

2004-12-16 07:48:09 PM
Additionally, just to put the dying from .046 figure in perspective, according to http://www.health.org/nongovpubs/bac-chart/ a 90-100 lbs woman could read .05 with just one standard drink.

2004-12-16 07:48:37 PM
adenosine, Alden_Sloop: Alcohol absorbtion doesn't work on a linear scale. They're saying that 10% of the alcohol required to blow a .462 should have killed him. The BAC for that still would have been over .2.

2004-12-16 07:49:27 PM
correct, Asa Phelps.

I do, but my HTML skills fail once I go any further than putting my text in bold or italics, so here's a non-clicky version of the link. Story is rather lame-written, though.

Achtung:

Germany, recently blew .633 after going on a binge of "Gluehwein" (nasty stuff, cheap red wine with sugar heated up and served in a cup)

I didn't know there was that much alcohol content in Gluhwein. That stuff is nasty.

Any kind of addict can develop a huge tolerance to a substance (look at Kurt Cobain).

I've heard of some alcoholics who regularly went through a gallon of vodka a week and were still functioning, as in they were able to go to work and have a family that was more or less used to their drinking.

And I thought my 3/4 of a bottle of vodka in half an hour was good. Nothing compared to this guy (yeah I puked it all up)

/future alcoholic

Check this chart out:

Yeah, if they drank what he drank over the course of a day, a 10th of it, it could be lethal in an acute dose, but the officer is full of shiat and exagerating if you ask me.

SockMonkeyHolocaust

It's evil. I think it's the sugar that does it. Plus, you usually drink it out in the cold to keep you warm, so you can kinda keep going and going without noticing how loaded you've become.

Until you go inside somewhere where it's warm. And pass out. Not that this, uh, ever, err, happened to me. Uh. Yeah.

2004-12-16 07:57:04 PM
uh... I'm a pretty heavy drinker but that is just insane. That dude must've been drinking all his life cos that's FAR more alcohol than the amount that kills freshman on a pretty regular basis around here.

/lives in Boston, pussy college kid town USA.

2004-12-16 07:58:42 PM
lmfao... man i posted that before RTFA, i'm pretty much just repeating what's already there.

Recipe for the worst hangover of the year.

We had our work holiday party with the open bar last night. I had to be pushing .999 or something.

2004-12-16 08:02:35 PM
If somebody blows that high and isn't dead, I suspect that the equipment is malfunctioning, and their BAC is actually much lower.

2004-12-16 08:02:46 PM
My town must have some strong livered peeps.... I see >.400 coming in the ER all the time. Give them some IV fluid, let 'em sleep it off, all's well in the end. One WALKED in with the cops at 420... when asked why he got farked up, he said, "because I'm Irish." Reason enough, I guess.....

2004-12-16 08:02:59 PM
Why don't these charts ever go high enough? I need to know how many I need to guzzle before I get behind the wheel.

2004-12-16 08:04:19 PM
hell I blow a .26 when I wake up to go to work in the morning.

/27 now.. been on a 6 year drinking binge.

2004-12-16 08:04:45 PM
Couldn't you blow like a .900 if you had just recently taken a shot? Not because your blood alcohol is actually that high, but just because there's still alcohol in your mouth.

2004-12-16 08:04:50 PM
As an additional note, I would like to point out how much of a lightweight I am:

220lbs (most of it fat), and I don't like to drive with 3 drinks in me (unless I wait an hour or two).

2004-12-16 08:06:03 PM
A rough translation of Achtung's article:

Chemnitz -- At first, the police couldn't believe their eyes or the testing equipment. But even on a second attempt at measurement, the meter didn't say any different and stubbornly showed a breath alcohol content of 6.33 parts per thousand (=.633%). [Might this be higher than the corresponding blood alcohol content, e.g. from additional evaporation of alcohol in the mouth? -- SlowTimedRapid]

A Chemnitz man had drunk this staggering[?] amount at the Christmas festival of the Saxony city. As the police said on Wednesday, government employees repeated an already-performed breath alcohol test, because they attributed the level of 6.33 parts per thousand to an error in the testing equipment. The man admitted to having drunk at least twelve pitchers of Gluhwein. He was taken immediately to a hospital by an emergency doctor summoned to the scene.

Rock, according to this site I can have 5 pints in an hour and still be under .08g/L

Dan_B: My town must have some strong livered peeps

You know you just made me think.. Does evolution predispose those of us with a predisposition to drunkness with advanced livers? I come from a long line of them, and I'll tell ya liver problems just ain't in the cards.

2004-12-16 08:09:32 PM
Sorry, .071g/210 Liters of breath as registered via the standard breathalizer.

Reminds me of my family. We are all a bunch of drunks, and the only thing we die of is heart problems. My dad was an alcoholic for 60 or so years and is still in great health.

I'm hoping my stout Scottish liver keeps me from my alcoholism until the fat kills me.

I remember reading an article on the homepage of DER SPIEGEL (which I am unable to find and thus link at the moment; i think it's been removed), which mentioned that the fellow in question had the .6-something confirmed through a blood test.

Also, I'm dumbfounded he could still talk before being taken to the hospital.

OK, these charts mean NOTHING to me. What constitutes a drink? Help me do the math so I know what's safe for me to drink at my local pub before I hop into the truck.
My normal beers range from 7%(Smuttynose IPA) to 12%(Ye Olde Chucklehead Barley wine) How mant of these can I drink within two hours to be legal?
I weigh 200 lbs. 6'1"
I'll buy the 1st answer a beer next time I'm in thier town.

The average adult male has about five liters of blood. 5 liters x .5% alcohol = 25 ml alcohol ~ 20 grams alcohol ~ 1 ounce alcohol.

That's like one shot of vodka in his blood. Doesn't seem so drunk now, does he? And let that be a lesson to anybody who contemplates an alcohol IV drip.

2004-12-16 08:14:03 PM
Yeah, what about drinking 4 shots of everclear, 4 of jose cuervo, 2 of jack, 4 of bacardi, 6 glasses of jungle juice filled with the vast majority of those previous alcohols and one carton of mango juice, four beers, and finishing off the night with another 300ml of jack?

Goddamm that was a headache. I should've had one of those little home breathalyzers with me though.

275ml of everclear in one sitting is amusing too.

But I'm mainly german and irish, so it takes quite a bit to put me out.

2004-12-16 08:14:15 PM
that chart kinda makes me wish I was a 100 pounds! Think of the money I could save!
