Dear Dr. Vinge,

I'm ready to go affiliate now. I'll take entry any place on the value chain -- we'll renegotiate share later.

I have a virtual island for you- in my head!

For only $20,000 I can build a virtual island in my mind for you. You can email me or call anytime you want and I can tell you what's going on. Sell space on your virtual island and for a flat monthly fee, I can do the same for the other inhabitants. I will have a phone line installed so you can talk to the various inhabitants at your slightest whim. True, they'll all sound like variations of my voice, but they will be your subjects.

Call now, operators are standing by doing nothing.

it was real money, so unfortunately they must be real idiots. good point

I don't think this is that big of a deal, more money than this has been spend on artwork. Granted, the buyer won't get anything physical for their money but I'm sure someone put a lot of effort into making the virtual island and the buyer appreciates their work.

2004-12-14 05:43:03 PM
spent on artwork too

I'd only pay this much for a virtual island if I could conduct virtual atomic tests on it.

/mmmm, glow-in-the-dark barbecue...

Used to sell castles for $1000 each in Ultima Online. Also, sold virtual gold at $250 per mill. Paid for my first couple years of college. Some people.

Who would want to buy a $26,000 fake island that smells like gamers? Have you ever smelled gamers?

2004-12-14 06:07:21 PM
um, why? for that amount of money he could have bought any number of things that would be more fun and last longer than the virtual island. artwork isn't as disposable as this virtual crap.

2004-12-14 06:07:41 PM
What the hell. Don't people realize they're buying something that probably took all of a few hours to make? I mean, yeah, the game engine takes time to program, but once that's done it's in all probability a point-and-click affair. $26k???

The article said that the game had the unique feature of being able to convert real money into ingame cash and vice versa

Maybe he's not dumb, but rather a Genius. He'll develop it and sell it off piece by piece, then take his game profits and convert them back to real cash.

/stupid like a fox
//who is more foolish, the fool that leads or the fool that follows

2004-12-14 06:08:28 PM
So a guy buys the island and then he in turn is going to sell off real estate from this island for real cash to people who want to join this virtual communtity and they in turn are going to have to pay taxes?

2004-12-14 06:08:29 PM
Ok, as someone who plays the game and have been following the Treasure Island auction for 3 months, I must admit there are a shiatLOAD of wealthy people who also deal with us middle class college educated Americans.

80% of the people who play that are from Europe. We know of at least 4 high class film (as parts of the game have been in films).

For example, one of the best sets of armor in the games will retail for roughly $5,000 USD (Shadow armor, male fit) because they prop up the prices. A fairly shiatty set of armor yet is popular (Nemesis) is about $800 USD for a full set. There is a gun that is worth over 8k alone.

The graphics are terrible, the gameplay is so limited (run around kill stuff, buy ammo, repair, kill stuff) or (run around, mine, mine, mine, mine, buy more supples, mine mine mine, repair) and the lag is amusing. The people are nice though.

I personally have made roughly $400 USD in a year playing. I have invested about $320 into it though, so my net worth is about $720 + my skills which can sell very high. So my avatar is worth about $1,300.

I'm a trader, buy low and sell high. I don't play the lottery system of hunting, mining, or crafting (which you will 95% of the time you will lose and have to put more money into it + repair costs)

"WTF is wrong with people."

Now THERE'S a hole with no bottom...

Have you ever smelled gamers?

I went to a computer fair once - and only once - to buy some stuff.

How can you not smell them?

Project Entropia's unique selling point is the ability to convert real money into ingame cash and vice versa.

The bolded portion would seem to suggest that the buyer may not be an asshat, if he can somehow generate real money with this thing.

2004-12-14 06:10:07 PM

I'd buy it

2004-12-14 06:10:17 PM
That game is weird. I do believe how it would work though is that he can sell/rent out lots on his island for real cash and potentially make a profit.

2004-12-14 06:10:42 PM
sorry, Backassward, you beat me to the punch while I was ironing out the kinks in my poor HTML skills.

Reminds me of Greed Island from the anime "Hunter X Hunter". I doubt many people here know what I'm talking about.

2004-12-14 06:11:40 PM
He probably has big plans for leasing space on the island and getting a return on his investment, plus whatever else the game mechanics allow. Doubt he dropped that much for kicks and giggles.

2004-12-14 06:12:49 PM
I submitted with a funnier headline!!

2004-12-14 06:13:23 PM
can someone please give a synopsis of what the hell that article is about to those of us who aren't 1337?

Backassward: beat ya to it

Yeah, but I beat you to pointing out that you beat me to making the same comment, so now it's a tie.

2004-12-14 06:13:47 PM
You wouldn't think a guy with the handle "Deathifier" would have $26,500 to spend.

2004-12-14 06:13:49 PM
So wait...am I utterly confused? Is this not a slashdot story? Aren't Fark and Slashdot kind of sworn enemies?

I thought I had made the better choice...I didn't realize there was no choice to be made...

I kinda thought of Fark and Slashdot having these epic sword fights over headlines in peril. And I'd get +10 for joining up with the victor.
/look, now it's relevant to the story!

it does say that they offer the ability to turn your virtual money back into regular money, so if this thing does take off, and this kid got in on the ground floor, he could have a very wealthy amount of money coming his way from the 'mining' and real-estate potential making this virtual 'dumbass' somewhat wealthy. guess it's all gonna depend on how many people get into this game.

2004-12-14 06:14:24 PM
for that amount of money he could have bought any number of things that would be more fun and last longer than the virtual island.

Two chicks at the same time.

2004-12-14 06:15:00 PM
Maybe EA bought it up for the purpose of using it to ruin a game???
