Wow. Just when your mind starts glossing over everything that's been going on lately, something like this comes along and kicks you in the grapes.

2002-02-28 02:48:46 PM
Just cause I know this is gonna come up before long...Yes, Canada has a corps of F-18 fighter jets based in Quebec.

2002-02-28 02:48:48 PM
That guy (assuming he is innocent) is in for quite a treat when he gets off the plane. Glad its not me.

2002-02-28 02:48:59 PM
I wonder if everyone on that plane is kicking each others ass

2002-02-28 02:49:52 PM
I hope this turns out to be nothing.....

2002-02-28 02:51:18 PM
I'm going to go ahead and wait until the plane lands safely with nobody dead before I start making cracks at the Canadian Air Force.

2002-02-28 02:51:46 PM

man...I bet he's getting a little suspicious with the captain calling everyone up to the cockpit, one by one...

"spppttt..... keep. your. eye. on. the. guy. in 3c"

2002-02-28 02:52:14 PM
Stebain: everytime I see your screen name I think of "boner" stabone from that old show "The Seavers" (i think thats what it was called).

sorry bout the random outburst.

2002-02-28 02:52:35 PM
Wouldn't THAT be fun to be a passenger on the flight...totally oblivious to what is going on while fighter planes buzz around you.

According to the story, they're concerned because a passenger has a name SIMILAR to someone on the terrorist watch list. I really, truly hope that they have more to go on than that...

2002-02-28 02:52:54 PM
Canadian Fighter

2002-02-28 02:53:46 PM
The President of PETA is on that flight?

2002-02-28 02:54:09 PM
They are saying that the fighters are following the plane from a distance so that the passengers won't see it and panic.

2002-02-28 02:54:14 PM
Does this mean the world knows he is as good as dead but he doesn't?

2002-02-28 02:55:16 PM
Right there with ya bratha! By shooting the plane down now, we send the message that the gloves are off and it's on like a mutha' farka'!

2002-02-28 02:55:31 PM
For anyone interested, these are the dudes flying "shadow".

2002-02-28 02:56:30 PM
He probably trying to get away from the torch bearing Hindus

The_marq: thanks man, the most unbelievable part of the story was Canada having fighter jets, for a second I thought they were pulling our legs

2002-02-28 02:57:05 PM
Byort.... from the article..."The jetliner was being shadowed from a distance, not escorted, so the passengers would not see the Canadian fighters, the officials said.",/i>

2002-02-28 02:58:27 PM
Good lord. This plane is under suspicion because of a "similar name". Dell won't sell computers to people who have guns. What the fark is going on? I have to fly back east soon so I wonder if I'll get a full background check and be denied a plane ticket because I used firearms in the military 20 years ago...

2002-02-28 02:58:33 PM
The name of the person in question is "similar to" the name of someone who is on the International Terrorist Watch List. The FBI will meet the plane when it lands at JFK airport in New York, CNN reported

why did they let this guy on the plane????
Just arrest his ass at the airport...
what a bunch of idiots, I'll bet that the guy has a similar sounding name, but it wont be the wanted terrorist.

2002-02-28 03:01:37 PM
An FBI spokesman now said he is not aware of any disturbance on the Air India flight. And he said he thinks this may all be a misunderstanding, according to NBC News. The FBI spokesman said that someone in London (at the airport or a flight official) noticed a man's name on the manifest that looks similar to a name on a U.S. government watch list.

Ahhhh expert journalism. Report on the news as reported by the news...

I give them credit for having the guts to say that their news is based on an NBC news report.

He's got a similar name, Al something

2002-02-28 03:01:47 PM
When dealing with suspected terrorists the rule is "shoot first and ask questions later". Always follow this rule... always.

Bagotville.

I guess there's a lot of Bagots that live there? Must be a real progressive place.

2002-02-28 03:02:58 PM
Its probably Osama Ben Ladin and they thought it was Osama Bin Ladin. or something.

2002-02-28 03:03:38 PM
"The jetliner was being shadowed from a distance, not escorted, so the passengers would not see the Canadian fighters, the officials said."

Um, I don't know about India Air, but most international flights I've been on have been wired to sound--TV, including CNN, telephones and all kinds of goodies to keep up on the news. So for goodness sakes, keep those planes back and don't let this leak to the press....er, um, nevermind.

Boy, it must be tough to have a name that's similar to that of a terrorist. One of my housemates knows a kid who's name is Jeffrey Dahmer... no-one accepts his dinner invitations for some reason.

2002-02-28 03:03:42 PM
Phix-it
I give them credit for having the guts to say that their news is based on an NBC news report.

This way when it turns out to be a bogus story they can laugh at NBC

2002-02-28 03:04:22 PM
I'm sorry, but this is . A military escort (from two countries), a full deployment of FBI agents, countless thousands of people being delayed, and mild web panic. Why? Because somebody noticed that someone had a name similar to someone on the FBI's Most Wanted List?

Do you really think someone who's on the FBI's Most Wanted list would use his real name, or a fake name that is well known?

I'll be more than happy to eat crow if things turn out different, but I don't see how they could.

2002-02-28 03:04:22 PM
Don't shoot down the plane... have the stewardesses walk around and look for some guys who look like they could kick some ass and tell them "There's a guy in 13 F that needs some ass kicking."

2002-02-28 03:04:31 PM
If this is the guy we are looking for I'd say he is one of the most idiotic terrorist out of all of them. Who would use their real name? Who would fly to the US? This can't be the person we are looking for.

2002-02-28 03:05:55 PM
Typical non-story.

My name is similar to "Billy Dilly" but it's not the same.

2002-02-28 03:05:59 PM
The last terrorist who flew from europe tried to blow the plane up. I hope they notified the crew somehow.

2002-02-28 03:06:34 PM
At least the FBI is mobilized. Imagine if something were to happen (poo poo), and we weren't prepared? That would really suck. I still think they should just shoot the plane down, you know, just to be safe.

2002-02-28 03:06:46 PM
hey whats the url of that web site that lets you track planes by flight number?
btw its air india flight 101

2002-02-28 03:06:48 PM
OK, instead of just shooting the sucker down, how about alerting the cockpit so they can be aware of the potential threat. Then they can beat this guy in the head with the axe like the last moron. sorry to be the voice of reason but it just seems logical to me.

2002-02-28 03:06:56 PM
On 9/11 they used their real names...

Thirdrail Nice Jedi-mind-trick...

"These are not the terrorists you are looking for..."

I can understand why they're taking the extra pre-cautions... all because of "What If"

What if Muhammed Ali Akbar Kabulu got a passport with the name Muhammed Akbar Ali Smith on it? Ya never know.

As much as I would love for them to catch the guy... My bet is on "Not a terrorist"

2002-02-28 03:08:50 PM
WORLDCITIZEN:
Sorry to burst your bubble but that is taped on the flights...not live.

But you DO get to listen to Cockpit chatter...

2002-02-28 03:09:07 PM
Lets hope this guy doesn't have a PDA with email access.

2002-02-28 03:09:18 PM

"I do believe I will be bringing a plane down very much."

2002-02-28 03:12:13 PM
