The story about the killer cat on that page is slightly more interesting.

2004-12-14 05:34:41 AM
For farks sake, how on earth do the mods select what is greenlit?? Sure this is a great story, but that's a farkin shiatty headline. Sure 10 out of 10 for being factual, but minus several million for style?

2004-12-14 05:36:01 AM
Damn, that's a farked up thing to kill a friend over. What would it have mattered a week later?

2004-12-14 05:38:35 AM
"sounds like good old english boys with good old english names..... *sigh*"

Anyone understand this? Care to explain?

2004-12-14 05:43:35 AM
Man kills best friend over man's best friend.

THAT would have been a much better headline...maybe....

2004-12-14 05:43:56 AM
Yeah dukefluke if you read the article you'd realize one of those boys was named Ashley.

Or perhaps a compromise between yours and the actual:

Man kills best friend over man's best friend's favorite chair.

AgentPothead - I DID read the article. Ashley is also a boy's name, where's the problem?

I guess the visitors should never threaten to smack one's b*tch up

2004-12-14 05:55:32 AM
dukefluke Ashley is only a boys name if Jethro is a girls name. Or if Drew is an ok name for Drew Barrymore, even though Drew means MANLY. How do I know this? Because my name means farmer manly.

2004-12-14 05:56:42 AM
Although there are better stories out there, this beats that stupid story about Britney Spears.

/Any story involving Britney Spears is not news.
//Same for J-Lo, Hilton, etc.,.

AgentPothead - I DID read the article. Ashley is also a boy's name, where's the problem?

Not only is it also a boy's name, I thought it was more commonly a boy's name. I've known two Ashleys, both male.

2004-12-14 06:02:28 AM
Ashley was originally a surname meaning "ash tree clearing". No sex attached, unless you take surnames to be masculine by dint of how they are handed down.

/don't smack my ash up

2004-12-14 06:04:38 AM
I knew a girl named Asher. May have been one of the most beautiful gals I ever did meet.

2004-12-14 06:08:24 AM
I have lived in 4 countries, visited 28 US states, and one time I even met Christopher Reeve. And every Ashley I've ever met, all 7 of them were female. Though dukefluke and binnster if you are european, I have to admit I have little knowledge of how many male Ashley there are in europe. Speaking as an american though, Ashley is female.

Style is always a good substitute for substance.

"dukefluke Ashley is only a boys name if Jethro is a girls name. Or if Drew is an ok name for Drew Barrymore, even though Drew means MANLY. How do I know this? Because my name means farmer manly."

Right, just so this is perfectly clear to everyone - since the majority of Americans have, for the past 30 years, just make shiat up as names to give their children, any of you who chime in with comments about English names are just making yourselves look stupid, mm'kay?

2004-12-14 06:16:06 AM
Good call dukefluke, do you guys not remember Dom Peringnon getting shot last week?

2004-12-14 06:23:29 AM
dukefluke you can think I look stupid all you want. But if 99.99% of the world thinks Ashley is a girls name, it is. That is the power of words. They only mean what the people say they mean.

2004-12-14 06:23:39 AM
AgentPothead

Speaking as an american though, Ashley is female.

Speaking as someone from the country where the name was created, it can be used for both, but is probably more commonly male in the UK. I'd imagine our female Ashleys emigrated to your side of the channel back in the days of yore.

But if 99.99% of the world thinks Ashley is a girls name, it is.

America != 99.99% of the world

"dukefluke you can think I look stupid all you want. But if 99.99% of the world thinks Ashley is a girls name, it is. That is the power of words. They only mean what the people say they mean."

Okay, gotcha. Just for the record, are you implying that 4 countries and 28 States is 99.99% of the world? No, didn't think so. I'll just wait on the decision from the PRC before I start collating world opinion on the subject.

2004-12-14 06:29:31 AM
As a Brit, I'd have to say that in blighty Ashley is mostly a male name. Also, I live in Wandsworth (just about) were this took place! I'm gonna be damn careful where I sit in future.

2004-12-14 06:33:14 AM
You know, I was always a little leery of my neighbor after he names his male german shepherd "Aspen".

/continuing thread meander

2004-12-14 06:33:30 AM
binnster I'm on irc right now talking to people from all over the world. None of htem think Ashley is a male name. I didn't mean that the US was 99.99% of the world. I meant what I farking said. Not what you farking think you can read between the lines. If you were to ask 99.99% of the world what sex the name Ashley was I'd bet anything they'd say male.

I went and checked though and the dictionary says you are right, Ashley is masculine and feminine. Though Ashlee and Ashlie are both only feminine. Where does that leave us?? Who the fark cares.

2004-12-14 06:36:17 AM
Well I did a GIS for 'Ashley' (using the UK google site) and 99.99% of the image results came back male :P

2004-12-14 06:36:46 AM
"Though Ashlee and Ashlie are both only feminine. Where does that leave us??"

Exactly where we started, Americans making shait up and calling them names.

Or we could go the other way, and use a whole bunch of names - ain't that right Billy-Bob-Jo-Bob-Betty?

2004-12-14 06:37:46 AM
Well try it on google.com, the whole front page is female :)

Most people might think that Ashley is a female name cause their brains are rotted from all that Ashlee Simpson BS thats been crammed down our throats in the past months. You know - keep the ammount of thinking down and concentrate on making your associations by using single comparisons. Anyone who's grown up in a Commonwealth country would probably have known a few Ashley's in their life and chances are they were males.

2004-12-14 06:41:47 AM
Ashley is originally a man's name. Just like Leslie. And Laurie. And I'm sure there are other examples of male names that North Americans have somehow, for some reason, switched over to female.

And when you say 99.99% of the world - I'm sure you just mean:

Out of the North American population who have never read a book or seen a movie dated earlier than 1985, and think that the rest of the world exists just to keep the globe well-balanced in its orbit - 99.99% think that Ashley is a girl's name.

2004-12-14 06:41:48 AM
AWSOME

Thats so farking bad ass. GET OFF MY DOGS CHAIR OR I WILL SMASH YOUR farkING HEAD IN. Yes!!! AWSOME!!

2004-12-14 06:41:49 AM
I'm going to call any female offspring I sire 'John-Boy' (middle name 'Walton'). It'll take off big style and in a few generations every girl in 99.99% of the world will be called John-Boy. Then almost every American male will have a girls name (as we know that 99.99% of American males are called John-Boy).

2004-12-14 06:42:09 AM
Actually wageslave the name Ashlee is entirely female, we were discussing the sex of the name Ashley. And the only time I ever even heard of Ashlee Simpson was when she danced that jig on SNL.

2004-12-14 06:44:23 AM
farking right. Don't sit in Rover's chair.

2004-12-14 06:50:06 AM
"Actually wageslave the name Ashlee is entirely female, we were discussing the sex of the name Ashley."

And what in the wild wild world of sports is "Ashlee" unless it's a derivation/corruption of "Ashley", hmm? Seeing as it's been in existence as a name for about 25 years at the absolute maximum, that can be the only explanation, unless of course the origin of the name can be proved to be totally different.

So the name Ashlee isn't entirely female, it's the fabrication of someone who either can't spell or wanted their little darling's name to be more "special".

2004-12-14 06:51:55 AM
If they were in the UK why the hell does the guy have a baseball bat? Isn't that a sign that he is probably a psycho and is gonna bash someone sometime with it?
He should have a cricket bat so he doesn't look suspicious...

That's more like it. Pothead - take note - this is how you're SUPPOSED to deal with us forriners.

The spelling doesn't matter - theres a large group out there that would probably just think you misspelled Ashlee cause thats all they know. That was my point...
