"Are we losing our minds?,"

Oh, that one's too easy. That's twice this month the Vatican is not amused. When will the religious police be kicking down the doors of these blasphemous and plainly evil places?

2004-12-10 09:29:56 AM
I suppose nobody thought about asking PETA if this play was suitable..

We dont need Rome telling us what to do!

Psst, religion, go away already.

"And what big holes in the hands you have!"
"All the better to SAVE you with, my dear!"

I bet they'll have a conniption when they find out Little Red Riding Hood will be played by Sinead O'Connor.

2004-12-10 11:50:21 AM
Oh noes, the scaaaaary muslims will bomb our churches if we dare to celebrate our religion at the most holy time of our calender...better switch to Mother Goose.

fark 'em. I'd fly in Salman Rushdie and have him read from his latest work to the little kids.

Just pull your hoods and towel-wraps down over your eyes, and you will not have to watch.

2004-12-10 11:51:16 AM
Since when have Christians cared about anything but themselves?

2004-12-10 11:51:16 AM
Suck it Vatican.

2004-12-10 11:52:11 AM
/crosses fingers hoping for a flame war, work is too boring

Well, umm....whats wrong with substituting one piece of fiction with another? Both are just as plausible and both teach a good moral message: Red Riding Hood-wolves are bad and don't leave old women alone in houses in the midle of the woods; Baby Jebus-be good to people and keep an eye on your wife, lest she sleep around with deities.

/flame on

Power. Power. Power. Doesn't anyone care about anything else these days?

I'm so off the charts sick and tired of things being eliminated or modified because someone out there might be offended by it. If A Christmas Story is going to offend you, don't attend.

This has nothing to do with defending the Vatican, but rather traditions in general.

Wake me up when the Vatican is amused. And I wanna hear belly-laughs, not those I-just-porked-a-pre-teen-and-got-away-with-it titters we're always hearing.

2004-12-10 11:54:19 AM
I say just get rid of this whole Vatican thing, I never understood it.
I mean, we know that the bible was written by some old drunk dude back in the day to scare little kids, who'd thought the kids would start a full blown religion based on it.

2004-12-10 11:54:38 AM
Lusiphur

Extinguisher...Little Red Riding hood is portrayed as fiction. Baby Jebus is portrayed as fact. That's the difference.

2004-12-10 11:55:32 AM
gopher321: I'd fly in Salman Rushdie and have him read from his latest work to the little kids.

That would be cruel and unusual, I think.

/that controversial bullshiat book of his is long and boring
//writing it was not exactly an offense worthy of death though

"It is a perfect example of how not to respect the presence of different people, in this case our Muslim brothers, by annihilating our own identity," said Bishop Agostino Marchetto, head of the Vatican's department for migrants.

Why can't all the Christians in the U.S. be like this guy?

Anyway, I'm a U.S. Muslim, and I have a message for my Italian brothers: Christmas is a Christian holiday! If you're going to accept Christmas, then you're going to have to accept the Christian aspects of it. How about letting Christmas be Christian, and then also celebrating Ramadan? Those three days of feasting would have made a great party.

2004-12-10 11:56:16 AM
I bet "Little Red Ridinghood" productions save the parents a fortune in tea towels.

2004-12-10 11:56:27 AM
happy chrismahanakwanzaka to all of you!

2004-12-10 11:56:53 AM
jebus.. hehe

Person 1: hey, check out page 300
: it says "Jebus"
Person 2: it should be "Jesus" right?
-------------------------------------------------
its pronounced JESUS (hey-soos)

I miss the old days when the Church could gut you if it felt like.

Pope - No one embarrasses the Pope and gets away with it SMITE THEM!.....He's cooking up a something good!

2004-12-10 11:58:07 AM
they don't have to change there traditions, the way i see it is you don't see muslim country's changing there traditions.

2004-12-10 11:59:58 AM
sparked debate on how much traditions should change to accommodate immigrants.

Why is there any debate?

You want plays depicting the decapitation of Jews or the stoning of an adulteress, then go the fark back to wherever you EMIGRATED FROM!

This is how barbarian hordes have worked throughout history - slowly, almost unseen. They tear the culture down by degrees, and the society falls.

Better yet, keep your religion to yourself and I will do the same.

2004-12-10 12:00:00 PM
We have similar outrage here from the fundies...sigh.

2004-12-10 12:00:03 PM
I am so sick of this. Hell I live in the reddest county in the reddest state and I saw the list of holidays for public schools and they had Dec. 22 - Dec 27 listed as "winter holiday"

Do we have to do the whole fasting thing or can we just show up for the Iftar meals and the Eid at the end? ;)

2004-12-10 12:00:51 PM
You have to ask though - what if the Christian population in a predominantly Muslim nation started to speak up on this sort of thing? Anyone thing the schools/government in such a place would bend to such requests at all? I'm genuinely interested if anyone has a story regarding something like this.

2004-12-10 12:01:18 PM
Soooooooo, the people that don't think raping little boys is bad; don't care that the people that don't think killing everyone that does not think like them is bad?
Does that sum it up?

"they don't have to change there traditions, the way i see it is you don't see muslim country's changing there traditions."

Maybe you should celebrate our grammar tradition

/agree with your point though.

2004-12-10 12:01:22 PM
Oddly enough,

Anyone familiar with the history of Christmas will tell you that it was nothing but a way to convert pagans over to Christianity in the Roman empire. They combine the pagan solstice celebration with the story of the nativity and wham, instant holiday.

It's a marketing ploy. Plain and simple. Just like now.

So the church should just STFU and let it lapse back into the original celebration and stop pushing their debasing mythology. They've done far enough damage already.

2004-12-10 12:01:22 PM
I agree with Spyderz, why should everyone become so sensitive to a minority group? Why is it that the people that yell the loudest get the most attention? I'm offended that you have a different religion! You will be assimilated!

If you don't like it, deal.

Here, here! If we tiptoe around being careful to not offend anyone, we might as well just wrap ourselves in bubble-wrap too. People need to grow thicker skins and stop pandering to people who can't take any controversy (goes for all religious groups/political groups.)

No other European organization has the balls to stand up to the Muslims except for the Vatican?

Score one for Catholicism.

Actually, it's a pagan holiday.

I'm going to make a play where Mike Tyson has a homosexual relationship with Jesus Christ. It'll take place in the Vatican, obviously, with pope Sir Mix A Lot.

2004-12-10 12:02:54 PM
Waaaah. The vatican is upset.

2004-12-10 12:03:03 PM
I don't see why muslims would be offended by this. They believe in Jesus too. Just that he's a prophet not a god.

What's the problem here? Imagine what would happen if they replaced the nativity with a depiction of Muhammed's birth. Now that would be some fireworks.

You'd think the Jews would be the offended ones to worry about. They have a hot-tempered army and they're not afraid to use it.

Christians.

Please.

Get over yourselves already.

2004-12-10 12:03:15 PM
Why doesnt this have a "Hero" tag?

Every year people bemoan Christmas for being about consumerism

Every year people try a little bit harder to strip Christmas ("The Holiday Season") of any religious or moral conotations.

Does anyone not see how these two trends are directly opposed to one another?

2004-12-10 12:03:18 PM
This is why the matter should stay out of the schools, governments, etc. Worship or don't worship what you want in your own home and at your place of worship. Don't force it on everyone else.

I'm a Christian in the bible belt of the USA. During this time of year, and especially in our current political climate, it scares me the amount of intolarance some people have for other's views.

Just keep faith where it belongs, and there won't be any conflicts. Preserve all the traditions you want without trying to force them on anyone else.

2004-12-10 12:04:31 PM
Isn't Little Red Riding Hood about how a girl begins her period and has to fend off the wolf who is out to 'do' her? How does this not offend Muslims?

Also why the hood? burqa?

Bon Natal... Bon Natal...

Everyone already knows this. If you don't like Christian holidays then don't friggin celebrate them.
