I cannot stand anime for the life of me. Obnoxious cartoons with large eyes and sweat beads pouring out of their faces. Ugh.

Good stuff that anime.
I watched it as a kid in Japan in the 70s, when it was just a cartoon to me.
They are about 30 years late on this scene.

I love it when the new otaku think that "Samurai Pizza Cats" and even "Robotech" are retro anime.

Give me Gatchaman or give me death!

Hehe. Switch on cartoon network right now and check out "Super Milk Chan". THAT is weirdo anime.

Wait does this mean that we can't like Anime anymore? Are we having a geek meeting to discuss this?

I was trying to think of some kind of smartass headline along these lines, but I don't think I could have topped submitter.

Everyone not living in Japan has it easy. It is everywhere here, please help, please. Save me.

I've been hitting the torrents pretty hard lately because of stress from uni.

And by "pretty hard", I mean "I have a Japanese vocabulary of a few hundred words.".

Also, submitter gets a trophy full of steak'ums.

Wow, and the only good anime they bother to mention is GITS?

And don't even mention that Innocence had a wide release in the states? I saw it at my local theater ><

I wonder how many people recognised the picture of full metal panic? I wonder how ashamed I should be for recognising it? Or that now I'm mentally watching the scene in full metal panic fumuffo where the guy in the bear costume stomps on a yakuza's nuts for about 15 seconds?

I feel I should point out the headline is a Simpsons quote.

2004-12-10 08:00:29 AM
Bah, anime is so old I'm sick and tired of it. We need a new comic style...one where everyone is only drawn sideways...with animal heads and human bodies...

does the phrase "pubescent sense of erotica." bother anyone else?

Even by the time I got into anime (2000) I was already late to the game... aren't journalists paid to keep up with current things?

Then again considering the sorry-ass state of tech journalism generally, I'm not surprised.

They're fascinated by the difference in the culture," Borders said in a telephone interview, giving as an example stories starring Japanese schoolgirls. "They like reading something that's not the normal, run-of-the-mill story that they might have been used to.

Yeah, I, being a 26 year old man, have always wondered what it's like to be a 12 year old Japanese school girl in whore makeup and a short skirt with perky boobies fighting three headed monsters. It must be fascinating. In kooky looking cartoon form of course.

/thinks all anime is for losers who have no chance of leading real lives or getting actual girlfriends

Heck, it's already been co-opted pretty much wholesale into films. If Matrix wasn't flat out live action anime, nothing is.

2004-12-10 08:15:15 AM
Weird frickin' stuff. On business trips to Japan, I'd catch afterschool cartoons in the afternoon in the hotel after work, and there would be incredibly gory and weird cartoons on. Bad guy with long claws, crushing people's heads, showing his long nails going into the eyesockets, gore pouring out. Another featured some wrestling dudes, one of them was Black, he had this enormous scrotum, with huge balls that hung out of his shorts, and banged between his knees as he walked. I would just sit them on the end of the bed, watching in slack jawed amazement. I really don't know how Japanese kids retain their sanity watching this stuff

/I am not making this up

The Yahoo article in question actually is basically a PR puff piece written by ADV, so nothing to see just move along. Indeed Devil Hunter Yohko was their first regular release, but I think they made much more money with their first few hentai releases.

I had no idea they are so huge now(150mil in sales not bad at all), but they were pretty much starting to dominate already in 2001 when I left the whole Anime scene after 9 years. Was funny seeing the whole industry change from a few small companies and a lot of fansubbers and some bootleggers into this huge juggernaut it is today.

/used to own an Anime store

Anime is flat out crap. Just because the cartoons have sex doesn't make it sophisticated. The plots are always so contrived and and pointlessly complicated. And the dialogue...it's worse than the crap George Lucas writes.

2004-12-10 08:23:03 AM
"Disney is very family type" - this guy Ledford must be practicing his Engrish in hopes of not coming off so gaijin?

First time I saw anime was probably around... 88. At the time I thought "whoopee, just more bland Japanese animation, just with a weird twist"; I still sort of think that, despite having seen _Akira_ and the other old-school "classics". It's weird to me how animation is going in two directions simultaneously: forward with CG and backwards with the Japanimation stuff.

The only reaosn it's gaining popularity is because people are actually STOCKING THE STUFF.

It was impossible to find anime to rent until recently, and you still can't rent many of the titles unless there's a small comic book store near you that rents.

ANIME!

(Be sure to check out the link at the top "mari chan sound"!)

May not be safe for work. Or anyone.

Most anime is, I agree. But there are quite a few interesting titles out there.

Best not to be dismissive of an entire medium. I mean, there are some COUNTRY songs that are good ^_-

Did you like cowboy bebop? Everyone likes that show.

Why? How is it any different than any other form of entertainment? It's less homo erotic than watching sports at least.
