I sent 'em an email. It's stations like that that make me sick of the news. Support your local independant radio and television stations. Oh, and BBC news.

2004-12-08 09:07:55 PM
write 'em. Everybody write em. and say SHAME ON YOU AND Dave Helling as a reporter. Tell them they need to do an on-air apology. Imagine if it was your father, who had worked a lifetime to buld a business, only to have some sleazy son of a biatch do this to him.

Write em. Give em hell.

2004-12-08 09:25:35 PM
What a load of shiat.

2004-12-08 09:25:44 PM
I hope they get sued. They're definitely asshats.

What a crappy thing to do. This whole thing stinks!

2004-12-08 09:26:59 PM
And Scott Peterson was a fertilizer salesman, too! Did he blow up Laci and Connor?

2004-12-08 09:28:32 PM
email sent. Shame on them.

2004-12-08 09:29:47 PM
That is just sick, taking advantage of some small mom and pop business for ratings. I could see if they bought 1000 lbs of pure ammonium nitrate in some under the table deal but lawn fertilizer.........sheesh

2004-12-08 09:31:03 PM
Fark 'em. Fark 'em good. That is just WRONG. I can't believe someone would go to such great lengths to destroy a man's career.

But if this is the same station, they've apparently run into issues before. As a note, they're owned by CBS.

No, it probably won't open in a new window. Sorry.

2004-12-08 09:31:13 PM
Hmm - guess it wasn't much of a stretch from buying bullshiat to selling bullshiat.

2004-12-08 09:31:51 PM
wasn't this same fertilizer story a thread a few weeks ago? only the slant on the earlier story was 180 degrees out of phase with this current story where the guy was basically a rat bastard for selling all of that type of fertilizer... and because of the earlier slant everyone was posting comments against this guy.

interesting on how the same news story slanted different ways affects people's opinions and their comments so widely.

I hear Kansas City Channel 5 also mkes fertilizer in the form of piles
of [expletive] they call reporting. If distilled for methane, these could
POTENTIALLY also create an effective bomb many more times powerful
than the Oklahoma City bomb. I'd send a news crew over there. I hear
Dave Helling is the mastermind. Just an FYI

Email is not very effective as a way to shame people. Just like you go through your inbox and automatically delete the junk, these people can just ignore the complaints.

USPS mailed letters are the way to go. Of course, if you really want to screw them, you can send multi-page white-text-on-black faxes.

Wither the small business owner.
Wither common sense.

This is just the entertainment industry getting revenge on the fertilizer industry for Hal P. Warren's attempt at straddling both.

2004-12-08 09:36:52 PM
Well it's not like there's any real news to report in Kansas. Can you really blame those poor TV "journalists" for resorting to making things up?

What's wrong with this?

This is how reporters are expected to behave. When the New York Times, BBC, and CBS all participate in these sorts of frauds, how are the small-town (read: red-state) media supposed to know differently?

Old and busted oxymoron: "military intelligence"

New, hot oxymoron: "journalistic ethics"

Here's a link to the companion article that talks about how the TV station had been casing out this business for a while and the proprieter actually got suspicious and checked up on the buyer.

The TV station said he was selling explosive material.

He is not selling explosive material.

Couldn't this be considered slander? As this is an obvious lie that could hurt him and his business. IANAL, so if there are any lawyers around, please correct me. It certainly sounds like slander to me.

This is one of the reasons why media consolidation is so dangerous. If every news source is owned by the same company, who will hold them accountable?

2004-12-08 09:57:58 PM
Next up: an expose on an extremely hazardous molecular bomb, hydrogen hydroxide! It's an alkaline acid, contains enough oxygen to sustain combustion, and has explosive hydrogen atoms! It's the most common ingredient in acid rain! But that's not all - it's already in your house!

2004-12-08 09:58:00 PM
Dude, that is lame. I can go anywhere and buy a bunch of lawn fertilizer.

2004-12-08 09:59:25 PM
This is why I get most of my news from Fark (even though it's not news, it's Fark.com) and The Daily Show. Because at least there, I know ahead of time that I'm getting my news filtered with opinion, and it's generally funny.

2004-12-08 10:01:40 PM
What a bunch of bullshiat. This is one time where I will be happy to see a lawsuit.

I'd be pissed if some a-hole reporter started making crap up about MY business.

Dear Staff at KCTV5 and Meredith Corporation --

I am an avid news reader, preferring the privilege and convenience of online articles over the oft-time missed scheduling of television news. Due to my work schedule and various other events that make up my daily life, I often find myself missing all of the best news shows on cable. I fix this lack by utilizing news-gathering sites such as Yahoo! and Google.

However, I was shocked and appalled to read the article entitled "Televised report shocks business owner", dated Wednesday, December 8. The link to it is here, if you'd care to take a look: http://www.tonganoxiemirror.com/section/frontpage_lead/story/7123

In all my years of news-combing, I have rarely seen anything so underhanded and cheap as this. Your reporter, David Helling, has shown a complete lack of journalistic objectivity and class, putting both his own professional journalism and that of your station's under suspicion by the many who prefer to see the realistic and generally verifiable aspect of news casting. With a few sensationalist words and dramatic finger-pointing combined with some un-verified "experts", this so-called news reporter took a man's life's work and turned it to dust.

I am completely horrified at this station's lack of ethics and accountability. This matter should be rectified immediately with a full printed or spoken apology to Mr. McGraw and his company, complete with the verified facts of 20-10-10 fertilizer. You may rest assured that this matter will not just vanish. Sensationalism media has taken over many of the bigger stations and news rooms, but I expect better of the smaller stations. The very instant you encourage sensationalism and half-truth information is the instant you contribute in deepening America's fear of each other, much less what's outside of the borders.

I ask you, please, to rectify this manner as soon as possible. A man's livlihood, and your own credibility, is at stake.

Most sincerely,

Copy sent to CBS.

I long ago gave up thinking that the media had any credibility, but this guy brings their idiocy to a new level. They had a discussion board on their website where the reporter is getting his a$$ chewed out royally. Sorry - html impaired, but here is the link. Let 'em have it.

Jesus H Ballbusting Christ. I can go down to my local Lowe's and buy 10 bags of 20-10-10 (500 lbs).

Hell, earlier this year I put down some Scott's Turf Builder that was like 33-5-5. That has a higher concentration of nitrates than the "explosives" this reporter claims to have bought so it should be even more "dangerous." Should we go out and arrest the Lowe's managers or Ortho CEO for supplying explosives to terrorists?

This news channel needs to be slapped hard for pulling a stunt like this. Asshats, preying on the public's fear of terrorism.

Next up: an expose on an extremely hazardous molecular bomb, hydrogen hydroxide!

Dihydrogen monoxide sounds cooler.

Besides being the main component in acid rain, it is found in cigarette smoke, car enhaust, sewage, black widow spider venom, yak urine, and industrial waste. Some companies dumb hundreds of gallons of dihydrogen monoxide directly into the same rivers that our water supply comes from. It is a worldwide problem -- dihydrogen monoxide has been found in every water supply tested, from the most polluted pond to the most pristine mountain spring. It is even found in all supplies of drinking water, and is found in lesser amounts in every single beverage tested. Once an animal is exposed to dihydrogen monoxide, it becomes immediately addicted -- withdrawl is 100% fatal. Further, the animal's tissues become saturated with dihydrogen monoxide, causing anyone who eats it to be exposed to this insideous chemical.

Under certain atmospheric conditions, dihydrogen monoxide can form a misty layer of 'smog' that can obscure vision, causing traffic accidents, and in some climates it may even solidify on the ground, causing reduction in traffic and danger of pedestrians falling on their asses.

Dihydrogen monoxide, which insideously permeates the whole body, including the brain, is often seen in individuals with severe mental illness. Charles Manson, Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Stalin were all dihydrogen monoxide addicts. A recent study found dihydrogen monoxide addiction in all fifty-three producers of child pornography that agreed to participate in the subject. In fact, as yet, there has not been a single known criminal who was not also suspected of being a dihydrogen monoxide addict.

Dihydrogen monoxide is also believed to play a pivotal role in environmental disasters, such as flooding and mudslides.

Help us eliminate this horrible chemical from our lives, before it's too late. Write to your senator or congressperson and demand that dihydrogen monoxide be banned in the USA. Your children may have already been exposed.
