Any Brits here? I understand the laws over there really screw you guys over if you find any sort of "treasure" - as in valuable historical artifacts.

Boy that would suck.

(explorers) "Yes! Finally - after half our lives searching we've found it!!"

(British government) "Why thank you! We'll be taking that...and here's £5 for your troubles."

No, the "what's wrong with this picture" works. It's because it forces you concentrate on the picture, thus making the effect greater.

Bcp01scu05: Actually, this is the really cool part: if bn does indeed stand for billion, then 2.5 bn pounds is NOT 4-5 billion dollars. Since the brits are really farked up, one billion isn't a thousand million like it is here, it's a million million, or what we'd call a trillion. Chew on that for a sec.... 4-5 TRILLION dollars. Somehow that doesn't seem possible. But if it is.... screw the war on terrorism, let's go after England!!

2002-02-27 01:18:52 AM
Let's just party in Ibiza instead

2002-02-27 01:19:07 AM
I'm not 100% certain on this, but I think - despite what might be 'official' - most people in the UK, or anywhere in the world, would understand 'billion' to mean thousand million, not million million.

This wreck is worth $4bn or so.. there's no way it could be trillions, the entire economy of the UK is only worth around $2tn per annum.

2002-02-27 01:20:53 AM
I imagine the bn means bullion, as otherwise it would result in an amount of tonnage that no single ship could hold unless it was the size of Idaho. bullion meaning gold coins.

2002-02-27 01:27:29 AM
Boyd: After doing a little more searching, I now have to agree with you. The original definiton and the one still commonly used in Enlgand IS million million. However, more and more people in England have started using the US definition of thousand million. The Guardian appears to use the latter.

Yeah, but how much soup is that?

2002-02-27 01:28:35 AM
Oh, btw, I used the OED online for info. http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/00022111 is the definition of billion.

I had initially thought that 10 tons of gold would have an effect on world gold prices, depressing them drastically... until, of course, I discovered that the United States currently has over 8100 tons of gold! Germany comes next, with over 3400 tons, and France is third, with 3000 tons! (Let's ask the French for their gold so they can surrender again.)

2002-02-27 10:17:08 AM
Guys, it's thousand million practically the world over -- maybe some hardcore OED-fan old guys still use million million, but really, it's 10^9.

2002-02-27 10:28:29 AM
...this could make a wonderful vacation. If I get enough gold, I could buy my own island...a little island paradise...

"Get your scuba gear together..."

Sgt Napalm is right. 3000ft = 90.9 atmospheres of pressure.
That would be pretty messy.
