I had a boyfriend who specialized in juvie sex offense. We are both mental health professionals. One major reason why he and I broke up was because he thinks Megan's Law is a crock of shiat and is "unfair" to the molesters. I thought if he thought such a thing that he was a crock of shiat and was throwing victims to the wolves.

You have it backwards--only 20% of those that are molested become molestors, but 80% of those who are molestors were molested. See my above post on the NIH stats. So, yes, there is a fairly strong correlation between childhood abuse and molestation as adults, much the same way there is a very strong correlation between childhood abuse and "acting out" in childhood--i.e. if little Billy is showing his weiner around in the fourth grade, it's time to ask pops about those "camping trips" because it is by far usually the father doing it, not some creep down the street. People are so frightened about that that they want to crucify all the extrafamilial cases so "child molester" can be externalized to some guy cruising the park in a van and they won't have to live with the horrible truth that the kids are usually getting schtupped at home.

You know what else I noticed? The sex offenders that I used to work with are NOT on the registry here. Supposedly they are under 24-hour supervision, but they aren't imprisoned, just essentially babysat and chauffeured, because their IQs are below normal. That's bullshiat. A lot of the human services staff working with them are complete idiots and don't take the risk seriously (example: letting the serial rapist carry THEIR emergency cell phone). You want scary? That's scary.

I think telling teenagers they they don't have the mental capacity to consent is a bad idea for 2 reasons: #1 it underestimates their mental capacity. #2 it overestimates the importance and impact of sex. As a society, we define the impact of sex. We determine whether sex is seen as a simple bodily function that can be a lot of fun, or whether it's seen as a life-changing event that destroys the young, corrupts the innocent, addicts the old, and rots the brains of everyone that comes in contact with it. We've chosen the 2nd and I just think that's wrong.

If you're lucky enough to have them listed, go check out how many live in *your town*. There are five of them within walking distance of my apartment. I've seen one of them at the local pool (but he wasn't a pedophile, he was a rapist). I did recognize a pedophile at one of our local parks this summer, though. Did I mention they also post their photographs, here?

Virginia lists what they did, and how many times they were convicted for said crimes, right along with their picture. They also only list the "Violent" offenders... and keep in mind how difficult it is to get a sex offender convicted in the first place.
