2004-12-03 08:44:46 PM
Part of a live interview on Channel 13 just now:

Reporter:What did you hear?

Hispanic Lady: We were driving along and heard this big boom, you know, like we thought it was our truck having trouble.

/live 20 miles away in midtown and thought it was a plane crashing in the neighborhood while on final into hobby airport.

2004-12-03 08:45:04 PM
Both Houston police and firefighters are being told to stay back...

Both? A city that big only has two?

2004-12-03 08:45:13 PM
This is the 4th fire at this plant in 7 years. Judging from the helicopter footage being shown on 13, this will be the LAST fire at this plant. Doesn't look like there will be much left.
/This is my boobies as a TFer, mad love to Karmacidal

Please do explain Fark to me.

You've been around long enough; you should know.

Why should people be told to be on topic all of a sudden?

misterchill

LOL! Oh please keep insulting sweater girl.

I love the internets because I can just hop over to Houston news. It says that 20 apartments were damaged - I hope everyone is okay.

2004-12-03 08:46:10 PM
I wish people wouldn't use the Newsflash so often, Everytime I see that I'm expecting to see another large terrorist attack.

2004-12-03 08:47:27 PM
misterchill, maybe you should be more observant.

2004-12-03 08:47:30 PM
misterchill: The topic is that shiat is on fire. You're allowed to go off topic (within reason) in a thread like this.

2004-12-03 08:47:30 PM
Why should people be told to be on topic all of a sudden?

Because there are mods afoot. Read the FArQ if you have any questions.

Sadly, that was actually a different fire on the SE side of town. Still getting reports on this one, which is SW.

misterchill, meet Sweater Girl. She can fry you to a cinder by merely catching you within her gaze if she feels like it.

Do try to be nice to her.

houston farkers watching the local news:

is the helicopter noise necessary? the guy in the helicopter isn't even talking ... why do they make the anchors have to talk over that noise?

2004-12-03 08:57:46 PM
Well, if the apocalypse is upon us, I hope it starts with Texas.

2004-12-03 08:57:49 PM

Here is your one warning, roughmarble- don't do it again.

2004-12-03 08:57:52 PM
I had this business idea for disposing hazardous waste: I'd collect a ton of the stuff, charging top dollar to do so.

Then when my building was full, I'd have an accidental fire that would destroy all the waste, and then I'd collect insurance on my "loss".

Then I'd claim bankruptcy and have the city clean up the toxic ash leftovers for me.

Lastly I'd sell my now detoxed land.

/homer: Sayonara suckers!

2004-12-03 08:58:59 PM
Is Troy Dungan on the scene yet?

2004-12-03 08:59:23 PM
Whoa! I was in a pub five miles from there and didn't notice a thing. The wonder of unlimited Shiner Bock paid for by real estate agents...

2004-12-03 08:59:36 PM
Maybe if this makes a big enough blackened crater, there will be something worth looking at in Houston?

2004-12-03 09:00:33 PM
Anybody in Pasedena? I've got relatives there. Wondering if they heard/felt it.

/Tom Bass park has a Disc Golf course called "Spank Me Hard."

I heard the explosion. I, too, thought it was lightning at first.

I live in the Spring/Klein area. Didn't hear or feel shiat. None the less, they said there were no serious injuries or deaths. Which is surprising.

They also said about 10,000lbs of wax is currently burning.

Quite possibly, but I doubt they noticed. Ground shakes there all the time ...

Tom Bass is a crappy course. Flat as hell. 36 holes, though, which is rare. The downtown and TC Jester courses are much nicer ...

I believe that in the event of a Superfund site, the land owner loses claim to the land. There was a superfund site declared out near me, the result of a munitions and rocket fuel plant that went under.

Apparently, the land was bought from the state at a bargain after it had been reclaimed from the defunct munitions plant. The new land owner wanted to develop it into housing, but didn't want to pay for clean up. There was a big shiat fit because they were attempting to bribe city officials into getting the city to pay for cleanup, though it wasn't proven. The feds stepped in, and declared it a superfund site. Since the landowner didn't want any part in paying for cleanup, the feds yanked the land deed.

You've gotta be a BIG corporation to get away with superfund swindles, ie Halliburton.

10,000 lbs of burning wax, that's wicked.

2004-12-03 09:06:30 PM
Pasadena is pretty far from there. They probably wouldnt have heard it.

/houston is really, really big. takes nearly an hour to cross on the highway.
