actually, the new words is that the Xbox 2 will have 3 different versions at rollout. One is barebones, the other is with a HD, and the third is with something cool...i compltley forgot what it was.

I have to give a high-5 to our daughter for finding this out on one of her forums before the postcard came in the mail. I was just about to put it in the console when she told me. You rock,Maddie!

Love,Dad.

Wow! X-Box has a Microsoft-installed hard drive?! I can't think of any other systems that have hard drives run by Microsoft products! Unbelievable!

And have you heard about this X-Box live? It's so revolutionary! No other system in the world can connect with other players remotely!

Arguing about console preferences is like arguing about Coke vs. Pepsi. Most of it is brand loyalty.

That being said...

I've had the RPG erase-syndrome happen to me on Final Fantasy 1, 7, 8, and Tactics.

This story is old and busted but I feel sorry for the dweebs out there who lost save files.

Oh jeezus gravy, enough with these "Hah, MY console so pwns YOUR console!" posts. I like playing PS2, I don't like playing XBox. I don't give a flying monkey which is the better system, and neither do many other people, so shut the hell up already and go play Halo.

Backups aren't hard, people. Spend 10 bucks, buy a package of 3 memory cards. Whoops, problem solved.

2004-12-02 05:54:57 PM
wyltoknow, where are you finding memory cards for that cheap? Even the generic ones I find in EB and such are $10-15.

KarmicHoax

My sis loves DDR and it's various extentions. She has the hardcore dance pad for it (PS2). The dance pad is a metal cabinet, much like the pads in the arcades. Don't remember the brand though...

If you like flailing around in front of your T.V., there's always the EyeToy (PS2) as well.

Not sure about X-Box, but I'm sure there's something comparable, if not the same on it as well.

No, you're wrong. There's supposedly going to be at least three different versions of Xbox 2. One sans hard drive, one with a hard drive, and one which is also an entry level PC. I'm not sure if it's been confirmed yet, but here's hoping they stick with this plan.

2004-12-02 06:01:53 PM
Bigtimmy-
The third will be more like a PC, with a CD burner, wireless keyboard and controller, and will run other Windows software. It's also rumored that the controller for this one will fit in the hands of the average human, as opposed to the current ones, which are built for giants.

all4not - haha

Dont ask what fanny means in this part of the world. Its always amusing when older American tourists complain about their sore fannys.

On the topic of PC/Xbox/PS2 wars, use whatever blows your hair back. I am a PC gamer but dont care what others use, what does annoy me is when console gamers say stupid things like Halo2 is the best FPS ever.

2004-12-02 06:05:02 PM
And if you're too uptight to buy extra memory cards, buy yourself a Datel MAXDrive. Voila, easy USB-based backup utility for memory card saves. Plus, you can use it to update your Action Replay MAX code list, if you have one.

A few notes.

1. It's "Xbox," not "X-Box." No spaces, the only letter that's capitalized is the X, and there's no hyphen.
2. Xbox has Ninja Gaiden, Halo 2, Fable, KOTORII, DOA Ultimate, etc.
3. PS2 has Devil May Cry 3, Metal Gear Solid 3, and gobs of other AAA titles.
4. Gamecube has Zelda, MGS: Twin Snakes, Metroid Prime I and II. Sadly, that's about it. :/
5. Buy a console once, never worry that the newest game won't run on it without a $500 video card.
6. Neo*Geo had memory cards five years before the PlayStation did.
7. System advocacy (including PCs) is stupid, and by extension, system advocates are uniformly childish imbeciles.

Shut up and play.

UNC_Samurai,

Found my Mad Catz cards at Target, surprisingly enough, though it was a while ago. I believe those still sell for 15 bucks a 3-pack, if you know where to look.

And KarmicHoax, it depends on how much money you've got. Any DDR fan drools over the metal dance pads, but those come at a hefty price (lowest I've seen is around $200). If you're a cheap bastard like me, you can usually find 2 soft pads bundled with a DDR game for about 25 bucks on Ebay, but soft pads tend to be more annoying unless you modify them.

2004-12-02 06:06:04 PM
KarmicHoax: Between my friend's daughter and I (at whom she and her friends laugh to see a grown man playing DDR) we've gone through a few pads, the best soft pad I've found has been the Red Octane pad. (works on xbox and PS2.) It was about $100. Which sucks if you need two. But the cheaper pads have all either torn, totally lost accuracy, etc. And the hard pads, in addition to being so expensive, don't strike me as too portable.

2004-12-02 06:06:28 PM
The hard drive is one of the great things about the XBox, and I'm pissed that the next one won't have a hard drive installed. That's a step backwards.

"Here's what GameSpot has to say about the news/article posted a few days ago on The Inquirer that there could be 3 models of the Xbox2 (one with and without HD and another that could also be used as a PC).
From GameSpot.com
[QUOTE]
* RUMOR : The Xbox Next will come in three different models.
* Source: UK hardware site/online tabloid The Inquirer.
* The official story: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation"--Microsoft spokesman.
* What we heard: The past two weeks, Xbox rumors dominated the forums, the most juicy of which said that there will be not one, not two, but three versions of Microsoft's new console: The hard drive-less Xbox Next, the Xbox Next HD, which will come with a hard drive, and the Xbox Next PC, which will be both an Xbox and an entry-level PC. And there's some substantiation to this scenario, since supposedly customer testing of an "Xbox Next PC" occurred earlier this year.
* Bogus or not bogus?: Here's hoping this rumor is not bogus. "

I also got this disk in the mail. Played a few demos (with two cards in), but forgot to try Viewtiful Joe. Didn't even remember that it was on there until I got the postcard. Yikes. I really don't want to play that much Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution again. I can almost still feel the blisters from before.

Not to get off the topic here, but I have a question (I'm obviously new). If you click on your own profile, there's a line that reads:
Fields in red are only viewable to you.
One of these aforementioned fields is "Boobies." Wha...? Is that the filter in action, changing "Boobies" to "Boobies"?
.
.
.
Carry on.

What rpm said. Problem is, the average person isn't particularly inclined to spend the cash to get multiple systems... and admittedly, hooking up multiple systems can get to be a pain in the tuckus. But for whatever reason, people (mostly kids) tend to get very defensive of their chosen platform, to the point of being downright cruel, all for the sake of wanting to believe they made the "right" choice.

There is no absolute right or wrong in such discussions... a Gamecube alone wouldn't suffice for a lot of people, but if you're just interested in Nintendo's properties (and a fair number of people are), then it serves the purpose perfectly. Myself, I'm willing to plunk down to keep my options open. I can view everything that comes out without the notion of sour grapes, as I made a point of getting all three current consoles.

And Halo 2 is awesome fun in multiplayer. Half-Life 2 is outstanding, yes... but Counter-Strike is blargh, no matter how pretty they make it. I love the dedicated grenade and melee attack buttons. It's not the visual powerhouse that Doom 3 and HL2 are, but it does have an amazingly good feel to it. I'd like to see an HL2 mod with those dedicated attacks like Halo has.

2004-12-02 06:20:13 PM
This probably would have been better if it was on fark before the disc was sent out.

I got an email from sony explaining this so i was well prepared. A coworker got pwned by this.

I'm not an avid gamer, and certainly not a fanboy, but here's my worthless 2 cents on the console wars anyway:

Yes, the X-Box is technically superior, which is not surprising since it's newer and more costly to produce.

However, the PS/2 has better games. This is may be a subjective matter.

Now here comes the kicker....

BETTER GAMES TRUMP BETTER HARDWARE WITHOUT QUESTION.

That is all.

Halo II> GTA SA
come on, the graphics alone...halo II blows them out of the water. plus aren't you getting tired of the same game, wrapped in a different package (aka sequel)? GTA is entertaining for about a day, just enough to get all your pent up anger and rage out for the day. halo II is practically a new game, and it is totally bad ass on live. (level 11 for those curious)
i find it hard to believe that Xbox 3 will have no hard drive. i read in Official Xbox magazine, that Xbox3 will have a hard drive, have about 256MB of memory (RAM), something about an 80gig hard drive, and get this, run on an apple G5 processor. now before the flames, the G5 is a development processor. all your questions can be answered in either the november or december issue of Official Xbox Magazine.

as for the hard drive in the current Xboxs, i have over 7 entire music albums stored on it, and still have 50,000+ "blocks" left. any idea when i can expect to run out of space? is there anyone that has run out of space on the HD? (and if you have a modded one, how many games did it take you?)

2004-12-02 06:23:05 PM
Thanks to the wonders of employee discounts, I ordered eight Square-Enix games, most of which were Final Fantasy series, for a sum total of $58.

When some people trash the PS2, and not without reason, I happily point to my pile of PSX/PS2 RPG games, and they shut up and go away.

1. Buy a book

2. Open book

3. Read book

4. Make ZAP! noises with your mouth

5. Read about adventure, lust, danger

Said book should not include any of the following:

drive-bys
interplanetary battles with the word Yo! mentioned
big breasted volleyball players
bullet time slow down
the phrase "master of unlocking"
rolling various items into giant balls
any character with overly large eyes that glimmer
use of the word "loading..."
headsets
nerdy game chick reviewer considered hot...for a gamer
etc...

I got the brunt of this problem. Now, before you say "backup, backup", I did. unfortunately, before i figured out what had caused the problem, I ended up getting the backup eaten too.now, I have two nearly blank memory cards.
