...And here's what we now know about the man's true character: When facing a 6-foot-9, 250-pound angry monster who has already physically assaulted him, Ron Artest chooses flight. But when facing a 5-foot-9, 150-pound fan who struck him with a plastic cup, he chooses to fight...

Artest...a true coward...

I love a good brawl like that.
Fark the lawsuits - Basketball is so damn boring, that brawl spiced things up.

P.S. Barfights and brawls happen EVERY DAY in this country. That brawl was weak-ass in comparison. Whole thing overblown.

/Artest can't fight either. His attempt at assault was pathetic.

Some people are entertained by sports. Some aren't. I don't like peas. Some people do. I wish my hobby of watching sports was as noble and productive as whatever it is you do with your spare time. But alas...

Didn't the 'boobies' filter that cattheotherwhitemeat invoked used to add twelve hours to the post time so they'd look silly and their post wouldn't be first? What happened?

"Duke sucks."

Awesome, I hope that phrase gets included with every b-ball thread until mid-April. That is pure, golden comedy.

No, its more like "Man who stand in same row as man who throw plastic cup at Ron Artest get face beat in".

Fights are escalations. Wallace started it, the fan escalated it, and Artest, Oneal and Jackson escalated it further. All are equally to blame for the entire incident, and all should be punished severely. If Wallace would have gotten a heftier suspension I'd be happy with the ruling, although David Stern is a gigantic rotten dripping vagina.

I hope those players realize that some people get paid $7.00 an hour to deal with belligerent customers, and they aren't even allowed to punch anybody without getting fired.

Artest was suspended twice by the NBA last season, once for leaving the bench during a fracas at a Pacers-Celtics playoff game; the other for elbowing Portland's Derek Anderson. During the 2002-03 season, Artest was suspended five times by the NBA and once by the Pacers for a total of 12 games.

Artest smashed a TV camera on the floor after a loss to the Knicks, last year, I think.

Yeah, Minime65

A guy full of adrenalin at the time gets a cup full of beer thrown on him. Not knowing if he has been hit with something that could of hurt him, his instincts kick in and he charges the stands to defend himself.

That's not self-defense. Self-defense is when you resort to violence to PREVENT your own injury or death. Artest didn't go after the fan to prevent injury or death. His actions were retaliatory. Besides, adrenaline has never been an excuse in court. It might be brought up as a factor, but it's no excuse. Also, I'm not excusing what the fan did, but again, Artest and Jackson attacked multiple people. Only one cup was thrown, though. Even if somehow this were self-defense, it would have been nice if Jackson and Artest had limited their punches to a single culprit.

Name (team) Games $Salary $Salary Lost due to suspension

Ron Artest (Indiana) 73 $6.2 million $4.95 million
Stephen Jackson (Indiana) 30 $5.1 million $1.7 million
Jermaine O'Neal (Indiana) 25 $14.8 million $4.1 million
Ben Wallace (Detroit) 6 $6 million $400,000
Anthony Johnson (Indiana) 5 $2.2 million $122,222

Chauncey Billups (Detroit) 1 $5.5 million $60,611
Derrick Coleman (Detroit) 1 $4.5 million $50,000
Elden Campbell (Detroit) 1 $4.4 million $48,888

yea..they need to "defend" themselves..

Getting up, leaping over rows of chairs, and charging into into the stands to physically confront a dude who probably didn't throw a cup of liquid at you while you were flaunting yourself over the scorer's table at center court... that's self-defense in the Bizarro universe, I guess. Of course, Artest is from the Bizarro universe... so maybe that cancels everything o ut.

And the fat guy who got decked by O'Neal might have been one of the ball boys, from what the local (California Bay Area) radio dudes said... so that fat guy might actually have a reason to be courtside/on the field of battle. O'Neal could have killed that fatso if he actually landed that punch.

I thought the Pacers got off lightly for what happened. Stephen Jackson & Jermaine O'Neal could have gotten more for attacking those people. I didn't see much self-defense when Jackson started throwing haymakers, and O'Neal clocked that fat guy.

2004-11-22 04:02:25 PM
All I want to say is that any of the fans that came out onto the court got exactly what they deserved.

2004-11-22 04:02:51 PM
a very good point

9) You gotta give some props to the guy who threw the ice/soda/beer. I mean, direct farking hit! And somehow the cup didnt arrive empty. How do you even make a throw that accurate?

"My favorite was the guy who got throttled by Artest in the first place. He was holding his drink at the time, so it should have been clear that he WASNT the guy who threw the cup at Artest. "

2004-11-22 04:02:53 PM
Artest backed away from a fight with Wallace because Wallace is farking huge. He would have been killed.

Those fans shouldn't be too hard to find. Identify where they were sitting and subpeona the ticket records. Courtside seats don't come easy. I'm betting those guys were buddies of players.

2004-11-22 04:03:03 PM

A guy full of adrenalin at the time gets a cup full of beer thrown on him. Not knowing if he has been hit with something that could of hurt him, his instincts kick in and he charges the stands to defend himself. Ben Wallace should get the season suspension, he is the reason the fans went out of control in the first place.

What a load of crap. I agree that Wallace over-reacted, but watch the video: the original cup that hit Artest was EMPTY. Even if it wasn't, and the fan had thrown something more dangerous, what makes you think it's ok to charge the stands? Self-defense my ass. All Artest had to do was stand up, point to the fan that did it, and have him removed. Done and done. If you're a professional athelete, you have to be prepared for this kind of thing. Artest is a big, angry, mindless ogre and he deserves to be suspended.

2004-11-22 04:03:36 PM
Am I the only one that think the picture of the alleged beer thrower looks a lot like the dude who stole a baseball from a kid some months ago? I'd appreciate it if someone with access to pictures of the baseball jerk would post them for coparative purposes.

2004-11-22 04:04:03 PM
30 game suspension for Stephen Jackson? That's almost two seasons! Marshall Faulk better stay healthy for the Rams sake.

/stupid

2004-11-22 04:04:19 PM
Any player that assaulted a fan should be permatnently barred from the NBA.

The fact that they won't be is just further evidence that these sports figures are nothing more than overpaid thugs.

2004-11-22 04:04:21 PM
corncob, I do not think it is possible to agree with you more...all this crap while school districts are shaving days off the school year.

I gotta voice my agreement with what was said before: Punish the players, yes, But get those stupid, inbred, dipshiat fans, too. soooo many sports fans suck. Hey, there's another sentiment that's been said before.

You know what we need, Artest v. beerman, celebrity boxing for charity... That'd make everyone happier.

2004-11-22 04:05:52 PM
Doesnt Artest lose some street cred here, I mean if that was prison Artest would be doing Wallace's laundry.

2004-11-22 04:06:08 PM
if i went to an nba game, and ron artest punched me in the face, youre damned right id sue. id sue for waaaaay more than any reasonable value for getting punched in the face too. and, i wouldnt lose one second of sleep over it.

As an ex-Detroiter, I'm not surprised. The fans of this town has always behaved badly. I remember seeing flaming marshmellows at Pine Knob back in the early '80s.

Still, Artest should be thrown out of the NBA. There is no excuse for that behavior. Any 'fan' that struck first or came into the court is guilty of fanning the flames of the riot. Ben Wallace is guilty, but acted impulsively. Artest didn't. The "man in the white hat" is proberly the most guilty as far as starting the riot. He should have the book thrown at him.

This is just an opinion from watching the ESPN video.

I, for one, don't require Pro Sports to "waste countless hours on couches and barstools doing nothing but getting fat(ter) and filling the world's sewer systems with the soft creamy feces of the processed-food eating, sedentary, do-nothing, know-nothing human being."
I can do that just fine sans sports.

I'm just happy the Pistons are getting back into their form.
They used to be my favorite team before they started wussing out.

Also, I think one of the players may have travelled during that game. I can't believe the ref didn't call it...

Hey, let's not discount the high level of asshattery represented by all the fans throwing shiat at the players. On the same note that the players don't need to be jumping into the stands to fight fans, fans don't have the right to attack (aka, throw shiat at) the players. Anyone in the stands throwing shiat at the players needs to be tackled, arrested, and permanently banned from all games. Players shouldn't be allowed to act like jackasses and neither should the farking fans either.

sure, because stepping onto the field of play is the same as stepping into the lions cage at the zoo or circus, you get to be killed. what a stupid thing to say. what is this rule and where did it come from? what does this unwritten rule say about the players? that they are animals who arent like everyone else, they have no self control, that if you step on their turf, their brutality will be tolerated? if you believe in that, then the fans were justified when the players stepped onto their turf, and jackson and artest should have been brutalized. according to your logic.

2004-11-22 04:08:42 PM
What I laugh at is the people who "understand" why Artest went into the stands, then blast the fans who poured crap on him while he was being taken to the locker room.

Hmm...maybe A-Rod's girlie-slap was self defense? Ha ha ha.

It's better to wrestle and lose than play basketball and win. I'd have given anything to have been the guy Artest was taking a swing at - then Artest would have had two broken arms. You throw a punch at a wrestler and you are deadmeat.

2004-11-22 04:12:27 PM
I'm sorry. Artest acted impulsively. He wasn't as relaxed as he seemed or he wouldn't have jumped up so quickly and went ballistic.

I'm sorry I didn't complete my thought, whatever it was.

What I found disturbing was the frighten children. Think about it. Don't we place winning ahead of good sportsmanship? This is the fruit of our works the last 20 years.

It isn't "all about wining".

Sports is also about teaching our children about life in general. Shame on us.
