The stupid guy throwing the cup at Artest... that's what set Artest off. But throwing stuff from the audience is not alien to sports, and security will normally deal with that as soon as they can figure out who did it.

Artest and Stephen Jackson charging the crowd like rampaging barbarians... that's what set the whole crowd off. They're the ones who physically crossed the "invisible line", and not the fans. What was an initially stupid but isolated incident became a riot after several Pacers players charged up to fight the fans up in the seats.

The stupid players are at least as much to blame for the whole stupid incident as the stupid fans.

Nobody could have reasonably predicted the amount of security that was needed to prevent something that stupid. Players have been hit by flying crap in other sports - and as wrong as that is, Artest shouldn't have gone psycho... and Jackson definitely shouldn't have. Once the players jumped the fans, that's when things got ugly.

The Pacers seemed eager to jump into the stands and get into fights. Jackson didn't seem like he was acting in self-defense... it was the Pacers who initially jumped into the stands to fight the crowd. Jermaine O'Neal was looking for someone to pummel after being restrained by security from jumping into the stands.

At least soccer players have the good sense to get the heck out of Dodge when all heck breaks loose... not charge into the seats. Of course, soccer players would probably roll over and grab their ankles if they were hit by a flying cup of liquid.

Who says we don't miss our hockey? I think this incident and the college football fracas shows that we're all getting a little antsy without our daily dose of hockey-style thuggery.

/Come on NHL & NHLPA - pull yer heads out yer asses!

The local news tracked down the guy who threw the cup and the guy is denying it. Moron is doing TV interviews wearing the same hat he was wearing on game night. The good part is that he has spent time in prison and is currently on probation.

2004-11-22 06:06:50 PM
Not defending the players here, but I think they should ban these fans from future games. The beer guy is a season ticket holder who shouldn't get a refund for all the games he'll miss.

First of all you do not know me.
Yup - its cool if it stays that way too.

Second of all I dont care how many people there are if a person throws something at me its is considered assault that means I have a right to defend myself

Explain this point: You are 25 feet away from someone, in a large group, throwing a plastic cup at you. You are actually arguing that you are defending yourself (i.e. acting in a manner to protect yourself from injury) by running into that group to hit that person? What are you defending yourself from, more plastic cups? How will you know you're finished defending yourself, after you beat down everyone in the group?

I dont know what playground you live on but frown men cant always go to the yard duty teacher when someone is mean to them.

I don't live on a playground, I live in a world where people get shot for cutting someone off on the road or making an obscene gesture. But thanks to your help, I'm beginning to understand that world more.

The future of the NBA:

Not necessarily these guys, but they'll look ALOT like them. While our current NBA/Hip Hop culture is 'frontin' and 'representin', the guys above are training hard to take away their jobs. Just look at what happened in the last olympics....

/there was a time that most hockey players had names like Smith, Jones, and Brown.

Sure Artest screwed up, but everybody seems to be giving the fans, in general, a pass for their part in this. I think the "ugliest" part of the incident was when the players were going thru the corral and the fans were pelting them with drinks, food, and a chair. WTF?

robolobo -How do you know that the person who threw the cup will just stop at throwing something at you? We do not live in a perfect utopian society sometimes people push you because they feel they can. I dont condone what happened on Friday but you need to understand not everyone is going to except being treated a certain way. If you dont stand up for something you will lay down for anything.

I Love Happy Stuff - Did you ever think that perhaps we as sports fans watch it for the actualy act of sport?
Most fans I know can sit and watch a game of whatever and enjoy it for the sheer thrill of sport. The contracts/hero worship/bullshiat doesnt have to come into it.

Can someone back me up on this? Surely Im not the only actualy sport fan on Fark.

I sit around and watch football all day, regardless of what the teams playing are, I love the sport. I Love Happy Stuff, you're kinda off base pulling that hero stuff out of left field there. I don't recall anyone mentioning the word "hero" until you stepped in. You're probably the kind of person that thought Pat Tillman's sacrifice was idiotic.

EXACTLY!!! What if they guy has a knife? Hmmm, more reason to keep the 25 feet of space with rows of seats, people, reporters, scattered security guards in between you and the person.

I dont condone what happened on Friday but you need to understand not everyone is going to except being treated a certain way. If you dont stand up for something you will lay down for anything.

Sorry pal, I need more to fight for than a plastic cup.

7 out of 10 people wouldn't be making 6 million a year playing basketball. If you felt like throwing that money away along with all of your dignity and possibly career go right ahead...then maybe you can get to work on your first rap album

Here is one of the 7 out of 10 men you described:

The other hunter "approached the person and asked him to leave, at which time the landowners and the occupants of the cabin came on the scene. The suspect got down from the deer stand, walked approximately 40 yards, fiddled with his rifle in some way ... turned and opened fire on the group"

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/11/22/hunters.killed/index.html

I mean he had to kill them, when you're a man you can't just lay down when someone tells you to move, you have to FIGHT!

Ben wallace is a freaking wimp. His team was getting smashed in the fourth quarter, and just cause he's a 41% foul shooter, he couldn't handle getting fouled while going up for a layup.

I have to field this one. Let there be no mistake: Pat Tillman did not go to Iraq to make a sacrifice, although make one he did. He actually went there because he wanted to kill some ragheads. Not everyone who dies in combat is a hero, my friends.

I didn't think he was a "hero" because he died. I didn't think he made a sacrifice because he died. He made a sacrifice by eschewing a multimillion dollar contract to serve his country. I can speak for myself and say I wouldn't have done it, but then I'm a greedy bastard. I'd say 99% of the people in his position would have stayed with the money. It's that sticking to your beliefs that set him apart. Hero maybe too far, but you were the one that gleaned that implication from my post, I never said that for myself. Hero or no, he's a man to look up to and to be learned from, that sometimes there are more importan things than money

Did I say it had anything to do with how you want to be treated? I'm sure that everyone would like to be treated fairly and equally ~ so long as they're on the winning end of the stick. The amount of money that they make should say: it doesn't matter how you want to be treated. You're in the F-ing spotlight, you're in the hot-seat. You're a PROFESSIONAL basketball player, you need to act like one. Sure Joe-shmoe could get pissed off and punch out some asshat throwing plastic cups around. Be you Joe-shmoe or Ron Artest you've gotta face the music when you do punch out that asshat.

Yes I blame him for flipping out, who cares if he's "under pressure." we expect people to control themselves, and he didn't, and he gets paid 6 million dollars a year to be a role model, keep himself under control, display good sportsmanship and be a professional. Yeah, he actually gets paid $6 mill to play basketball but all of that comes with the money. Did you see the South Carolina--Clemson game the day after? The Players interviewed in that brawl all refered to the basketball game. It might have been a coincidence, but who's to say?

These players should be held up to a higher standard because of their position in society.

/end rant

Weren't you the one just stressing the difference between pushing someone and throwing a towel and grabbing someone by the head and trying to beat them down? Hmm...well, nice parallel between punching someone and opening fire on them with a rifle. I agree that Artest went way over the line in going into the stands, but at least be consistent. If a fan chooses to f*ck with one of these guys, then that is their decision, but they should realize that these are bigass athletes with a lot of pride and fragile egos. Frankly, if I knew one had already been attacked, I wouldn't be throwing shiat at him, but hey, thats just me.

2004-11-22 10:30:05 PM
Bullshiat Artest was "doing the right thing". He was being a prima donna crybaby and holding up the game by lying on the scorers table.

Any fan who throws stuff should be ejected, arrested, and banned from the venue. Any fan who enters the field of play deserves a beatdown and arrest by anyone handy, but any athlete that goes into the stands and assaults a spectator deserves a lifeime ban as well as having their asses sued until his babysmommas are all on welfare.

Corncob-------so what you're saying is, if my poop was studied, people can tell if i was sitting on the couch watching sports or if i was in a chair trolling the internet? intersting. so when i piss, can they tell whether i was standing up straight or leaning to one side? people get fat eating shiatty foods. people get fat from diseases. to generalize that the sports-junkies are causes for certain issues in society with their eating and pooping behavior is completely wrong. nuff said.

I still think the NBA is being WAY too harsh. Stern should set an example...for the FANS! Some of the people were innocent bystanders, and there SHOULD be suspensions. However, most of those jackarses were TRYING to piss the players off. That's THE POINT of taunting and yelling. If you get hit for that alone, tough. When you THROW stuff at them?!? Put it this way, if I walk up to you in the street and throw a cup of liquid in your face, you BETTER beat the tar out of me. From the videos that are being shown, I have yet to see anybody get hit that didn't deserve it. I'm sure that there were some, and they deserve retribution, but the other people deserve ANOTHER good beat down.

Sorry. My post was in referrence to the attitude of "you can't let someone push you around" that has been so prevelant. I was trying to make that point that you never know what the other person will do, so its best to walk away from the little shiat.

The last thing the hunters probably said to one another was, "we showed him. no one can come onto our land and shoot our deer - this is our house!"

I think the BB players are getting the appropriate punishment and maybe even more than they deserve. I hope that the fans lawsuits are quickly thrown out by judges; unfortunately those idiots will probably walk away with tons of money because the teams in question and the nba will want to shut them up. I think the solutions should one or the other of these

1. Put the players in question and the fans in question in a locked room, perhaps some gymnasium and let them fight it out and may the toughest men win or

2. Put them all on the floor of an NBA game and have them shake hands like men and apologize to each other and to the world for the childish behavior and let it go at that.

I really like option 2. Obviously it would save all parties considerable expense and while it won't make any money for anyone, it surely would go a ways to improving people's perceptions of high profile "professional" sports.
