I don't know if crazy is the right word for this. Devout, maybe. I thought that Jesus preached turning the other cheek.

/predicts mostly Christians/conservatives will be insulting this guy.

Oh those cwwwazy mennonite cyclists...never know what they might do next...

At least he is practicing the teachings of Jesus Christ.

/love Christ's teachings, try to follow them out of the humanistic approach, but not a Christian anymore because can't stand to be around the political movement of most who claim to be Christians

An amish machinist?!?!? I don't remember ever hearing about "machinists" being mentioned in the bible.

Unless of course, he's a follower of the "machinist's bible"

2004-11-21 12:11:32 PM
Very impressive person indeed. Quite an example for others to follow.

He sounds like a winner despite having no driver's license. I suppose it reduces road rage.

Actually people misinterpret "turning the other cheek". It's a statement of defiance, meaning if somebody slaps your face, you turn the other side of your face so they can slap it to. it doesn't mean show them your booty as you're walking away.
/ask any theology professor

TOP TEN SIGNS YOUR AMISH TEEN IS IN TROUBLE

10. Sometimes stays in bed until after 5 am.

9. In his sock drawer, you find pictures of women without bonnets.

8. Shows up at barn raisings in full "Kiss" makeup.

7. When you criticize him, he yells, "Thou sucketh!"

6. His name is Jebediah, but he goes by "Jeb Diddy."

5. Defiantly says, "If I had a radio, I'd listen to rap."

4. You come upon his secret stash of colored socks.

3. Uses slang expression: "Talk to the hand, 'cause the beard ain't listening."

2. Was recently pulled over for "driving under the influence of cottage cheese."

1. He's wearing his big black hat backwards.

Without the typical recourse to physical confrontation that most rely on, the most likely imitation would probably result in greater vocal criticism. Example - you're a fcukstick.

2004-11-21 12:34:40 PM
chad_beaverwood- hahaha, very nice.

B82- I hate to tell you this, but I'm thinking that the "lefties" have more secularists percentage-wise and FAAAR less Christians percentage-wise than the "repugs". That means that Republicans should take this view and not try to pass bills with shady add-ons, like allowing certain Senators and people they've designated read any tax rebate in America. Or allow the Pharisee-like DeLay take over the Senate and turn it into a whore-house.

Just sayin' is all.

I know y'all probably already know this, but he's Mennonite, not Amish. Still like the Amish top ten list above though.

Attention Evangelical Christian Posers: It is possible to live by His words. It sucks and you will get kicked around alot, but so did he, so quit taking the easy road and act like the martyr (and the shining example of Love) that you are supposed to be.

If not, then convert to Mormonism. At least their book makes allowances for child-rape, greed, mysoginism and racism.

2004-11-21 12:43:20 PM
For Fark purposes, there's no practical difference between Amish and Mennonites.

2004-11-21 12:43:43 PM
Crosshair-Wow! What an incredible argument. I mean, CLEARLY since War did all of those great things for us, I mean, you're right! That logic is unassailable!

Well, except when you consider the fact that Communism, Nazism, Slavery and Fascism isn't really dead. And that Communism was actually destroyed from the inside by labor unions and the fact that their spending was far outside what they could do (sound like another country?). And that Communism helped us "beat" Nazism.

Oh, and that there is a whole ASSLOAD OF OTHER WARS THAT DIDN'T SOLVE ANYTHING. Like, for instance, what is the war in Sudan solving right now? Maybe that whole rape deficiency that the world is in? Oh! Oh! And what about the Iraq war? Man, I'm just glad that we got rid of all those nukes, and America is loved more by all the Arabic people, and that there are no new terrorists springing out of every corner in Iraq!

Man, that logic is totally unassailable... almost.

I had a mennonite physics professor in college. He was one of the best teachers I've ever had.

what a hypocrite.

First, he rides a bike, which I just KNOW Jesus didn't.
And also "mennonite machinist" - Oxymoron ?

Talk about having your cake AND eating it.

what a twat

I wonder what a Mennonite machine shop looks like

/programmed CNC lathes for many years

Lots of Mennonites near where I live. I call them Wanna-be Amish. They are Amish that sold out.

2004-11-21 12:57:17 PM
Oh, almost forgot.

A couple things that Pacifism never did for us:
1. Remember Ghandi? Where did pacifism get him? DEAD! That's right, murdered. Sure, there might be a billion of people not living under the yoke of another country, but that's unimportant. The important thing is it got Ghandi killed. Damn pacifism!
2. What about Martin Luther King? That guy, he was totally anti-fighting. What happened to him? DEAD! Well, maybe black people don't have to ride on the back of the bus anymore, and maybe there aren't as many lynchings and possibly black people are seen as human beings, but that is truly not relevant. PACIFISM STRIKES AGAIN!
3. Can't forget the old King of Kings himself, Jesus Christ! 33 years of pacifism didn't get this boy nowhere, he was killed by his OWN PEOPLE! Man, that's gotta hurt. Pacifism, when will your tirade end?

Hey, how about that guy, oh whatsisname, Hitler! Man, that guy, he knew what was up. He had a vision and set out to make the world his. He knew pacifism sucked, so he decided to go to war! Man, that guy rocked. And, what's more, he didn't even get killed by someone else, he ended his life on his own terms. God Bless War!

Crosshair

I'm confused. Which war helped us beat communism? Korea? Wait, no... Vietnam? Damn, missed there, too.

The Cold War? Wasn't really a war...since there was no fighting.

For everyone who loves being a Republican, I have this to say:

BETTER DEAD THAN RED

2004-11-21 01:06:08 PM
mtman900 : are you suggesting that we should have let Hitler continue doing what he did and just try to talk to him about it? ummmm....

Hitler: I'm going to kill Jews!
mtman900: Come'on you don't really mean that, do you?
Hitler: Yes.
mtman900: Don't.
Hitler: Ok.

2004-11-21 01:07:57 PM
I thought Mennonites could drive. Only simple, black cars though. No hydraulics or dubs. If he's a machinist, why can't he drive? Is there mennonite porn?

2004-11-21 01:10:13 PM

It was all just a bad dream, Crosshair...

Sounds like a nice guy, having a good time, who refused to let one bad experience taint his adventure.

Hey biker guy, if you're ever on the West Coast, I'll give you a place to stay. You don't even have to worry about too much modern equipment, seeing as... well, I'm poor.

Except... oh yes, ignore the computer.

2004-11-21 01:11:43 PM
what exactly makes this guy "Crazy"? does being a Mennonite make him crazy? or is he crazy for like to ride his bicycle?
IMHO the poster needs to look up the definition of crazy..

just a brief history note...
the Mennonites predate the Amish and were founded my Menno Simmons. Jacob Amman and some other Swiss/German Mennonites thought the Mennonite culture was becoming to 'liberal', and so Amman founded the Amish order, which is to this day more strict than the Mennonite faith.

I'd guess that youthful celibacy= mileage.

Other than that, sounds like he's having a Slackful lifestyle. A Seattle- SF journey w/ good weather sounds, um, kosher.

2004-11-21 01:13:14 PM
an army of poets: That's all well and good but that's not true pacifism if you are fighting back... anyway I was responding to :

"Hey, how about that guy, oh whatsisname, Hitler! Man, that guy, he knew what was up. He had a vision and set out to make the world his. He knew pacifism sucked, so he decided to go to war! Man, that guy rocked. And, what's more, he didn't even get killed by someone else, he ended his life on his own terms. God Bless War!"

What I don't understand is that people think there is some black-and-white line between pacifism and war. There is such a thing as a just war. World War II was a just war. The Civil War was a just war. It is entirely possible to be a pacifist and believe this. For example, one of the highest-decorate soldiers in World War I was a pacifist. When drafted, he spent days mulling over the decision, and then eventually decided that it was a just war. He went overseas, was a hero, and then returned home to become a pacifist again.

2004-11-21 01:14:46 PM
NecKromancer- Far from it. Pragmatically, there are plenty of good reasons for war. What I object to is this oversimplification of world events that boil down to "war solved all of this world's problems". It is manipulative and misleading.

There is a time to laugh and a time to cry. I wish we had been involved in World War 2 (and 1) sooner, I also wish that Abraham Lincoln had more aggressive generals. That doesnt' change the fact that war didn't end the civil rights disparity (which hasn't ended), it most certainly didn't "defeat" communism, and war with other states isn't what we need right now to end the dehumanization that Eastern countries are doing to Western countries, and vice versa.

This Mennonite had the kind of right idea. Sometimes fighting is needed to get a point across. But, sometimes we need to be selfless to have the other side get a view of how human we are. And that they are causing pain.

2004-11-21 01:16:19 PM
by the way this is the definition of pacifism i am using: pacifism

n 1: the doctrine that all violence in unjustifiable

mtman900:

"What I object to is this oversimplification of world events that boil down to "war solved all of this world's problems"."

wouldn't the following also be an oversimplification of world events only to boil down to "pacifism solved all of this world's problems"?

"Oh, almost forgot.

an army of poets: see my above post for the definition of pacifism to see why I'm saying that fighting in a war is against it.
