When you don't care about Red or Blue, it's funny.

When you decide to invest (emotionally or otherwise) in Red or Blue, it's no longer funny.

The material itself doesn't change - you do.

Agreed.

/Thought Doonesbury was funny from 92-00.

Any praise of the Bush administration is small-minded.

Any criticism or condemnation of said administration is desperately needed.

Give the man a medal.

Tired old Trudeau went from entertaining to *tedious*. He became The Establishment.

All the *good* strips are online strips now. Edgy. Funny. Smart. None of what Doonesbury's eroded to under the Lorne-Michaels-of-the-Funny-Pages Trudeau.

/off to read youdamnkid.com...

And it *is* "e-hem." Commie pinko.

Well, no... it isn't. A

/And watch that *is* stuff!

Like Moore, Trudeau used to be funny and compelling. And then he decided to hate someone. Now Trudeau's comic strips are sad and dishartening, lacking their earlier irreverance, replaced with hatred.

Yeah, the current story line about BD losing his leg is so totally full of hate. And not at all compelling. Right.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

I stopped liking Trudeau after he was Prime Minister

Forget about that extra A in the previous post... just a typo...

Nightsweat,

I thought PJ O'Rourke was the Twain or Rogers of our time. Not bitter enough to be the Mencken.

I must be at that age where I am neither young enough nor old enough to like Doonsbury. I don't mind political humor in cartoons, but Doonsbury just isn't my thing.

Still I suppose he deserves some award for his work. I do know that ol Gary hates Garfield, so I at least agree with him there.

On a related note, Fox News will be receiving the annual Pravda Award for best shill for a fascist government.

Just RTFA...

Jim Carrey is being honored too? I would assume not for a free speech award, cause what's he ever done? Still... that's not very good company to be in for Gary.

/Jim Carrey sucks, with the sole exception of his Vezina Cup winning season

/obscure?

Anyone have the strip with Frank Sinatra "doing it his way" where Trudeau put in a picture of Sinatra with a bunch of scumbag mobsters at dinner?

2004-11-18 02:36:37 PM
Doonesbury is lame. Never funny.

2004-11-18 02:38:28 PM
you backed him for saying what a dozen others are saying -- that Trudeau was funny until he got all political.

The point is there was never a time when Doonesbury wasn't political. It always has been. It started off on a hippie commune, fer crissake....

No, I backed him for saying:

Trudeau stopped being funny when he became a partisan hack instead of an equal opportunity critic.

"Until he got all political" is not part of that equation.

Please take the time to read the posts to which you would have a reply, there's a good fellow.

Where do Dagwood Bumstead and Michael Doonesbury stand on the important issues of the day? Dagwood would probably support George Bush and the GOP, but Mike would be more in tune with the Democrats...

I think I'd rather see Bloom County's Opus sodomize Mallard Filmore over the kitchen sink.

My boss was the voice of Mallard Fillmore.

That's funny.

That's not left-wing.

Sorry there's no stuff blown up real good, but that's the strip.

for the record, I think the conservative strip Prickly City is often very funny, though it pisses me off frequently.

Mallard Fillmore is to comics what Velveeta is to cheese.

There is no Twain of our time. That's part of our problem.
Then again, the whole idea is stupid. Who is the Swift of our time? Who is the Rabelais of our time? Who is the Voltaire of our time? Did people go around in 1884 calling Twain the Johnson of their time?

biatch biatch biatch, geez.

And when did criticism become "hate"? LMAO at all you retards.

2004-11-18 02:52:56 PM
Doesn't Hunter S. Thompson hate him because Trudeau uses his "likeness" or something without consent? Anyone have any quotes from either guy about this conflict?

Gary Trudeau comics are as original and funny as Cathy comics.

Please everyone, stop criticising the right-wing. It makes them feel bad. And we can't have that. It's just hateful and it makes baby Jesus cry.

Now back to our regularly scheduled extremely polite and nonjudgemental wingnut looting of the treasury, arse-raping the Constitution and bombing of civilians.

The recent stuff with BD losing his leg in Iraq is very good. Not funny, of course, but it's hard to be funny AND topical these days. Boondocks is usually better.

Mallard Fillmore, I don't know why the local paper bothers to carry that one. It's about a sober and serious duck who argues against the most cliched and untrue liberal stereotypes. I usually grimace when I read the punchline, and never, ever laugh.

Hey, it just dawned on me that Cathy and Michael Moore share a certain characteristic!

Is Cathy even produced anymore? I can't remember the last time I've seen it in my newspaper. Maybe I have just finally gotten to the point where my mind completely ignores the strip.
