If it was looking for a place to grab a smoke after hitting some hot doe, it should have known to stay clear of O'Hare.

2004-11-17 09:12:11 PM
young buck trotted into an O'Hare Airport terminal Tuesday morning, avoiding security by tripping automatic doors typically used for deliveries.

Yes, but did he stab anyone?

I have to go outside security for a smoke but a deer can waltz around the terminal?

Ohhhh, it's O'hare. Ok, it all makes sense now.

Too bad it wasn't an elephant:

Did you pack this trunk yourself?
Has anyone other than youself had access to this trunk since you packed it?

Of course it is going to go to O'Hare. It is still deer season here in ND. It would ahve gotten it's guts blown out if it had tried that up here.

The buck, which didn't have much of a rack -- I would hope not, I mean, it is a boy deer! (couldn't resist)

Terminal 2 baggage claim -- Anyone who's had to go outside at Arrivals at O'Hare knows it's no easy trick to get around all that traffic!

I hang at T-1 or T-5 myself (United or International) and always meet my ride upstairs at Departures (unless I hop the El).

the buck was euthanized.
Man, those Do Not Fly Lists are no joke.

2004-11-17 11:36:24 PM
After reading the article, I see they put the deer down with a trank and then euthanized it. There are SOOOO manny people right now that would have taken care of that deer for free. Also, when you trank the deer, you can't use it for food. Why can't "euthanized" mean "we blew it's brains out" much cheaper and a quicker death. Then donate the meat to the poor.

they said they assessed its injuries - it was hit by a car. it's probably like a horse - break it's leg, has to die. but yes, i'd have eaten it, though airport food makes me sick.

2004-11-17 11:39:00 PM
Well I was going to biatch about them euthanizing it...then I RTFA.

Deere!?!?

Crosshair, while I can't remember the details, we've been having some issues with some sort of deer disease as well as rabies (though I honestly don't know if that affects deer) here in the Chicago area. And if the deer wandered into the terminal (seriously, not an easy thing to affect as a cogent human being), it was either sick or way too docile. So, you really couldn't just butcher the remains, for fear that it was diseased in some way.

2004-11-17 11:41:34 PM
After officers assessed its injuries, the buck was euthanized.

Sounds like the officers were marines...

That is how it starts.

Once we stop being honest about our enemy and do not profile actual risk categories, we let deer get into our airport terminals.

How long before Bush or Condi Rice is blamed for this instead of the poor quality of the screeners?

I imagine the ACLU or Bambi will get in front of a camera now that there is media attention.

"The buck, which didn't have much of a rack, was injured."

I'd still hit it.

Chronic Wasting Disease or CWD.

A prion disease like Mad Cow and Scrapie, so far not shown to transmit to humans.

It would have gone down after the first shot if my webcam wasnt lagging...

It had been struck by a car, a common occurrence in urban areas during the height of mating season, before arriving at O'Hare.

------

Its mating season for everyone in O'hare...and people are struck by cars ....jeeez...that's cruel..

/sorry

I can't tell you how glad I am that the deer is dead. Airport security is no laughing matter. What if that deer had been allowed to board a flight? It would have been 9/11 times 1000!

I'm not saying that all ungulates are terrorists, but nearly all of them exhibit violent rutting behavior. Forget what you've been told about Bambi, these animals pose a serious threat to national security! They have dangerous weapons attached to their heads and should not be allowed onto airplanes under any circumstances!

I recently stayed at a hotel near O'Hare airport. I went for a run in some woods near the hotel (there's some nature preserve in the area, forget the name). I saw a doe and a couple of fawns. I thought this is pretty cool, a family of deer less than a mile from one of America's busiest airports. I guess a deer managed to actually get IN to the airport.

2004-11-17 11:53:04 PM
Seriously though, can we guess the reaction of the security staff when they discovered the intruder....

"Deer.."

"You mean that? I always liked you too, John. I didn't want to say anything cause I was afraid you might look at me funny."

2004-11-17 11:54:05 PM
Maybe they'll mount it over the Delta terminal.

Climberdusk

OK, I see your point but why do they have to use all the drugs on the animal. Tranks can get expencive. Just kill it and be done with it. It's already suffering. Lure it outside with some corn and put it out of it's misery with a lead injection. That's how we put down our dog, why not deer.

I submitted this earlier with a much better rack.

One word, Crosshair: Splat! Even the most skillful shot makes quite the mess with blood splatter. So they had to tranq it to get it somewhere where they could, well, off it. Assuming, of course, as I wasn't there. I simply can't imagine anywhere close to T-2's lower level where they could have lured it without making a mess in amongst the traveling public.

LMark -- People have no idea how much forest preserve we have in Chicago, but right by the airport there's a huge amount both as a buffer and because the Des Plaines River runs right there (I'm guessing you were at the Marriott Suites or the new Hyatt, but I digress). One drawback is they do get into traffic on the main on-ramp from the Kennedy Expressway (I-90) into the airport (speaking of splat). My dad was almost taken out by one once. But that's as close to the actual airport as I've ever seen deer, and that's still a good mile or so.

Glad you got to enjoy our wonderful Cook County Forest Preserve system!

What I am is a recall campaign coordinator, I tell the single-serving friend sitting next to me, but I'm working toward a career as a dishwasher.

You wake up at O'Hare... and there's a farking deer runing right at you.

Every time I shuffle into the boarding line, I prayed for that deer to plow right into me. That moment cures my insomnia with narcolepsy when we might die helpless and trampled by a farking deer that somehow got into the airport.
