Either kick Penn State out (Joe Pa really does need to retire), or rename the conference the Big Eleven. It doesn't look good when student-athletes are working for a league that doesn't know how to count.

Yeah, no kidding. The man was great fifteen-twenty years ago but it has been a straight decline ever since.

I think they should let Joe Pa's head in a jar coach after his body dies.

Dear Dumbass World:

Notre Dame does not have a sweetheart deal with the BCS. They used to. They don't now.

How is a 10-2 Notre Dame being left out, with an 8-4 Florida State getting a bid, a sweetheart deal for Notre Dame? Clue: it's not.

The fact is, right now, Notre Dame is at a DISADVANTAGE for getting into into the BCS. Notre Dame needs an at large bid, which means at least 10 wins. BCS-conference teams can often sneak in with a few less if their conference is having an off year.

You want to talk about a team with a sweetheart deal? How about Pitt?

I love college football. I make a fortune of the bookies with it. I've made $200 in two days.

I don't really watch it though, just bet.

ND had their chance to join the BigTenEleven, but chose the NBC money instead. They made their bed and now have to lay in it. It's going to be harder and harder being an independent. ND is going to have to decide if the network money will still be there but deal with the BCS bowl BS and having a tough schedule. They could go for the security of a confrence, but piss off the old time alums and lose rivalrys.

But it is true what the author says about ND no longer being a football power. How the HELL did Michigan lose to them? Oh yeah, that's right, UM always loses one game they shouldn't...

Eleven teams in the Big Ten.
Either kick Penn State out (Joe Pa really does need to retire), or rename the conference the Big Eleven.

Out of the Big TenEleven? Hell no! PSU is a guaranteed win anymore! Plus it's fun to watch him go ballistic on the refs and biatch at the media every week. PLEASE keep JoePa around as long as you'd like!

That's what I've been saying about Notre Dame all along. One thing no one seems to consider is how not being in a conference hurts Notre Dame's recruiting. The first thing anyone says to a recruit interested in Notre Dame is, "Come here, and you might not be a national champion, but you could still be a conference champion, and you don't have that chance at Notre Dame."

I think Notre Dame's destined for the Big East anyways. A few years down the road reality and perspective will hit them, and they'll realize it's neither good nor enviable to be an independent, and by that time their mystique would have faded to such an extent that the Big East is the only conference likely to let them join under their own terms.

ND being an independent has run its course, championship-wise. When it's "National Championship or Bust," as it ususally is in ND's case, it's normally going to be "Bust." It's so difficult to win a NC, that making that your only goal is setting yourself up for failure. A confrence championship and a BCS bowl would be a nice consolation and keeps the alumni happy. As you said, ND can't recruit that way.

As for the Big (L)East? If they got their act together, ND could dominate it, if they decide to go in that direction. But ND and the Big Ten are such a natural fit, with tradional rivals (Michigan, Michigan St, Purdue), the Big Ten need for a 12th team, and geographic proximity. TV wise, ND in the Big Ten would make it the most desirable CF property by far. If it isn't already... Unfortunately, it makes way too much sense to happen.

/Wisconsin and Michigan not playing for the Big Ten title is asinine, they HAVE to get a 12th team and have a confrence championship game.

The best part about college football? My Huskers have three losses on the year and could* still make a BCS bowl. GO BIG RED!

*note: while they could, they won't becuase Oklahoma will spank them in Norman then repeat as needed in KC

I think the overtime rules need to move from the "bad" pil to the "good" one. College overtime is so much more exciting than sudden death NFL overtime.

The best part about college football is that, unlike the NFL, every game matters. You lose once and it (usually) means you have no shot at a national championship. Just look at the Miami game against UNC last week. And I just have to mention that the Michigan-Michigan State game last week is probably the best sporting event I have ever attended. Go Blue!

2004-11-06 03:53:21 PM
Whether it's Ohio State vs. Michigan or Montana vs. Montana State, teams with buckets of hatred who play each at the end of the season make for great drama. We aren't TNT, but we love drama. Throw in an award like an ax or a bucket, and it's even better

go Cal!!!

If you can't fill your own stadium, too bad....Idaho playing home games at Washington State except when the Vandals play the Cougars is ludicrous

I wonder if he has ever seen the Kibble Dome that the UIdaho has for football games (and lots of other stuff). That thing is tiny. Martin Stadium (WSU's stadium, 8 miles away from UIdaho) can seat lots more. I don't think it is a case of not being able to fill the stadium, but selling out of seats quick. If it is homecoming (as they list in the article) I suspect you want as many seats as posible.

I'd rather poke my eye out than watch a football game. Is that on the good list or the bad list?

College football: The only sport where you can be ranked #10, beat the guys ranked #1, and end up ranked #15 as a result...

2004-11-06 04:07:18 PM
The worst thing about college football is high school football.

All across the country, thousands of dumbass kids risk their health for a few seconds of glory, and what they think may be a chance at the big time.

In actuality, 1 in 35 high school players goes on to play in college, and of those: 1 in 33 goes on to play in the pros; throw those numbers out the window if you play for less than a big-time school.

All along the way, people get knocked out of the system, but it rarely happens in a spectacular way so no one notices; typically, an athlete suffers a collection of minor injuries which degrade his ability to move up to the next level, so he is effectively washed up. . . before he's even old enough to vote or drink.

Furthermore, billions are made off the system, but the people who get ground up like hamburger and spit out are left with nothing.

It would have to get better to suck. . .

THE ALL-TIME NUMBER ONE WORST THING ABOUT COLLEGE FOOTBALL:

No chance to watch Janet Jackson flash her titty to about half the planet.

They forgot: "Forgetting the purpose of College is to learn, and severly slanting the budget and priorities towards sports."

Things wrong with this article:

1. Bragging about a 30,000-fan crowd isn't worth it.
2. Comparing Montana-Montana St. to Ohio State-Michigan is lunacy, at best.
3. The Big 10 is fine the way it is. Those who want to add another team in order for a championship game forget that the conference already has one. If you need to ask what it is, you don't know college football.
4. College OT kicks ass. How else are you going to see Eli Manning play two games in one night?

dmd8605, I watch college football and I know that the OSU-UM game has no bearing on who will win the conference this year.

2004-11-06 04:19:35 PM
Uh, "EnormousJuan", you've got it backwards: College athletes bring in huge amounts of money, that's why they milk 'em like cows, and toss them on the scrap heap after they outlive their usefulness.

2004-11-06 04:20:11 PM
swatty well, originally they started playing in Pullman so they could claim to be playing in a stadium with larger seating capacity to move up a division, not because of crowding problems. They've actually had problems filling the dome, and now they even give students free beer with their ticket (no, I'm not making this up).

2004-11-06 04:20:15 PM
There is no comparing Boise State to a real football school. 30,000 fans at a stadium is still 1/3 the size of alot of schools' stadiums.

I think these can be applied to college sports in general. No commercials, no endorsements, just good old sports, the way they're meant to be see.

I'm partial to hockey myself. Cornell beat Harvard (sucks) last night, and it was one of the most amazing games to watch... fish being thrown at the Harvard (sucks) players, making fun of the goalie's sister, etc... You'll never see that in any pro game. Plus, tickets are ten bucks! Beat that.

am i the only one who finds the nfl overtime system severly unfair?

Hard to get worked up over a game where the whole point is to run the pumpkin from one end of the field to the other without either getting knocked down or stepping in something. (Courtesy of Andy Griffith.)

Best football game ever televised: the four part arc on Rocky and Bullwinkle. They use to re-show it on Superbowl day, but not lately.

Hah. I would like to see LSU play on the Smurf Turf when it's 20 below with Zabransky (the SECOND STRING QB) on the top of his game!

/We may not have the tradition, but dammit, we'll kick yer cajun arse if given the chance!
