Ouch and the korean communists were such loving people. try reading Korean Atrocity! by Philip Chinnery.

Here's a review taken from this website:

Korean Atrocity!..focuses on communist murder and mistreatment of captured United Nations (UN) troops (and some civilians) during the Korean War. Using recently declassified materials collected for war-crimes purposes and numerous memoirs, he details the topic in gory detail, complete with photos. Much of the story is well known. Early in the war, UN forces found bodies of bound and frequently mutilated American and Korean prisoners. More were killed in marches to the prison camps, where others were murdered, and many more died from maltreatment. Approximately 38 percent of all US prisoners died in the Korean War, compared to about 1 percent held by the Germans and about 50 percent by the Japanese during World War II. Certainly, a number of the 8,000 Americans listed as missing in action in Korea suffered the same fate.

So two wrongs make a right Batfink?

happy to be on the same moral level as N.Korea?
2002-02-20 08:09:52 AM
harmonia nope, but i do think it's important to show that but sides commited atrocities.

Ouch do atrocities commmited by the US military against civilians koreans give there koreans a reason to hate americans? No

do communist korean atrocities commited against US military personnel give americans a reason to hate koreans? No

I agree Batfink, I hold no brief for the N.Korean Stalinists.

The South Koreans are a little peeved at Bush right now for making the tensions there peak again. They were making some progress and now it is very tense again.

I am also wondering how the Bush gang will handle the China/Taiwan situation. Clinton backed off selling Taiwan an AGEIS Cruiser, but I can see this administration arming them to the teeth.

Look forward to some white knuckle, action packed CNN action to come.

Batfink: But they do obviously...

romulus But they do obviously... ????

what koreans obviously hate americans or vice versa? are you taliking about enlightened people here or people that are willing to lap up to information that spews from their form of mass media

it's really starting to piss me off that americans are being treated in canada and other NATO nations like "the worst country of all time" and "bullies with attitude". i'm in my fourth year of classes in a canadian university and i've had many "discussions" in classes (political science, geography, social sciences-related) with professers who continually make anti-american comments. usually the comments are vague but clearly slanted against the USA.

i feel like it's my obligation to question them on it and they usually back away or roll their eyes, like i'm some kind of pro-american nut who hasn't learned about the issues or has been brainwashed by pro-american views.

some criticism of the american government is probably justifiable, since all governments are deserving of critical appraisal of policy issues and actions, or at least worthy of at least recognizing alternative viewpoints. however, the comments made in these classes by influential professors are usually generally offensive and ridiculously judgemental of everything american, as though it is some kind of world bully and like canadians in general recognize that. american policy issues that are controversial or seem to lack thorough exploration are nothing compared to critical problems that are constantly glossed over in canada. our government sucks huge comparatively.

i just wanted to mention that the whole world is quite fortunate that americans and the US government as a whole is as nice to the rest of us (the world) as it is. a leadership role that promotes peace and democracy is a noble goal and things could certainly be far worse if they actually flexed their military muscle towards a truly self-serving agenda.

NATO countries should be intelligent enough to recognize how fortunate they are to be respected as much as they are by the american government.

could you imagine tipper gore as the current first lady. or liberman being taken seriously by palastinians. those two have publicly stated views that would make republicans blush at being insanely right-wing.

nvrmind. i'm just venting. and canadians are beginning to drive me crazy. worse yet, i'm one of 'em. stupid canadians...he he.
2002-02-20 08:44:04 AM
as though it is some kind of world bully

Unfortunately that IS how the US is seen.

The latter of course, and with that said i wasn't trying to generalize saying all americans hate koreans and vice versa. I'm merely stating that some people bring up war crimes and such whenever they want to smear one side or the other. Maybe hate was the wrong word to use, ignorance might be a better word for it.

Personally i'm one of those rare breeds that see the world in greyscale rather than black and white and not being american nor korean gives me at least some impartiality.

Some people that post comments i agree with, others i respectfully disagree with and some people, like fb-, just scare the crap out of me.

Goatman: "This coupled with the above leads to lots of beaten up tourists."

Does this mean you're going to kick my ass, Goatman? :)
2002-02-20 09:21:01 AM
Dont worry WC, just sew a little maple leaf on the Rucksack!
2002-02-20 09:23:32 AM
Harmonia: When I was out of the country for awhile I could get by with that because I lost most of my American twang. Even Canadian diplomats thought I was Canadian. Unfortunately, I've been back in the Mid-West long enough that I probably couldn't pull of the Canadian thing very well.
Anyway, I'll come back and get into this hot and heavy later. I'm off to globalization class at the moment...
2002-02-20 09:23:57 AM
Hahahaha! Scots threatening to beat up Americans. That's funny.
2002-02-20 09:26:19 AM
I think Fb- has been drinking too much rum .. or he has a thing about Harmonia being Goatman.
2002-02-20 09:32:24 AM
You think anyone here can tell the difference in accents WC?

Fb, do try and keep up theres a good chap
2002-02-20 09:33:18 AM

Manifest your anger over your country's impotence by beating up innocent tourists. That's hardly the peace/love/understanding I expected from such liberals.

Hate crimes. You are no better then the people you condem.
2002-02-20 09:54:28 AM

From the book.

A "little girl" claimed her place in others' memories, too. "She came running toward us. You should have seen guys trying to kill that little girl with machine guns," said James McClure, who was in a 2nd Battalion reconnaissance squad. "She was crying and she ran back into that mess, and I guess the mortars got her."

"For Ralph Bernotas, what lodged in the mind was the distant sight of a "fountain" of white clothing, of refugees' bodies "splashing" into the air with the impact of shells. "Seeing that mortar fire coming in on that mass of people was very hard to take," said the altar boy from the coal country."

Damn the North Korean's for making those brave boys do this to South Korean refugees!!
2002-02-20 09:55:27 AM
Let me guess, Harmonia supports North Korea.
2002-02-20 09:59:34 AM
All you gung ho types who say "Accept it, hippies" just illustrate what's behind the pretense of diplomacy. If someone broke the law and killed 30 people from texas because 2 people from from New York were killed by Someone from Texas, who they couldn't locate, you wouldn't think it was fair. If they say "Well, I can cause I can," You'd call them a bully.

And I know there are terrible problems in my country. The difference between me and you. I acknowledge it. I care. Being a selfish arse isn't anything to be proud of.
2002-02-20 10:02:27 AM

Score -1: Inchoerent.
2002-02-20 10:08:17 AM
In all honesty, I could care less if anyone knows about what we're going to do. Get the G8 leaders in one room and they can't agree on what salad dressing to have with their dinner. Get the UN together and they can't agree what kind of chair to sit in.

Everyone else should just sit back and enjoy the explosions. We'll let you know when it's safe to come out.

Having friends is overrated anyway. They drink all your beer and never replace it.

Wow, here I expected to come back and find a heated flame war. Instead the thread just seems to have died.
It seems Fb- tried his best (overused) tricks to keep it going, but it died anyway. Oh well...
