metabolism is very changeable

convince your body that it does not need to store extra calories as fat by eating right and exercising. starving yourself actually decreases metabolism which is why diet alone will not work. when you starve yourself, your body senses that it needs to store all the energy it can (decrease metabolism) since it wasn't getting enough... thus your ass grows back into a sofa after you come off your diet. but if you exercise enough, your body senses that it needs to use all the energy at its disposal (increase metabolism) and thus you convert your fat reserves into useful energy.

Self righteous gluttony combined with a total lack of self control are the two most admirable qualities of the west. Big fat blobs and smokers are doing us all a favor by taking themselves out of the equation early in life. Can you imagine if EVERYBODY lived to be 100 yrs like that granny in the other thread? Who would pay for them to be 'retired' for 45yrs/ almost half their life?

McDonalds deserves a humanitarian award or something for enabling all the fatties to extinguish themselves, thereby saving us the trouble.

No, Molly doesn't eat wet food. We actually have a feeding type device (not exactly a bowl) that drops down more dry food as the food in the attached bowl is consumed. So I think it gives the damn cat the freedom to choose how much she wants to eat in one sitting. So she'll sit there and gorge herself, meanwhile getting about zero exercise, as she sits on my bed 23 hours a day (only rising to shiat/eat). That probably does her in.

strangeffect:

5'3"

Not quite getting the gist of your post.

It was a weak attempt at humor I suspect.

But that said - I'd suggest that while your plenty cute and stuff, but I somehow doubt you've ever been fat.

Especially fat as a kid. When your like 6 and your mum serves big serves of spaghetti and the like and insists you eat it all before your allowed to go out and play and put the left over in the fridge and eat those before you eat something else and looks real hurt if you don't like her food? Duh you eat too farking much.

When your 14 and your mum is working 2 jobs to keep you and your brother fed and can't afford a bucket of food so buys alot of pasta and rice and shiat because its cheap and goes a long way and you know its a struggle for money do you hand half your plate back uneaten? Do you look your mum in the face and ask her to buy something else? Do you even realise the carb heavy diet is why your fat when your mum is fat and your dad was fat and your grandparents are fat?

By the time your old enough to earn your own cash and make your own money your a lard assed little bucket of tub, and its a fark site harder to get it off and to keep it off then it is to just never get into the habbit. If you've always eaten right then its easy to eat right. If every day of your life you've been eating fatty and carb heavy food and never knew it was bad? If you've been eating portions 3 times as big as you needed, you get the drift.

Its alot easier to exercise if your active and fit. It kinda sucks going to the gym when you can feel everybody there staring at you because your twice their size. Its alot easier to work weight off when you don't have to carry it with you. Imagine getting on a tredmill carrying your own body weight hanging off all of you in rolls of squishy floppy crap. Its farking embarassing so you don't go to the gym to be stared at by those farking pretty people, cause everyone is better looking then you cause your self image is farked good and proper after being fat in highschool. So you try and exercise at home and you just never quite get around to it, you don't do enough of it, you don't have the range of equipment or the people to show you how to use stuff. You try walking but maybe you live in a bad neighbourhood, maybe you just find that walking isn't farking helping and you can walk 2 hours a day but you can't bring yourself to run because people will see the fat bounce and laugh at you and just walking isn't enough.

Going from Fat Kid to healthy adult requires first figuring out how to go about it, which is easy enough if you go looking for information, but then you've gotta break the habbits of an entire lifetime as far as eating goes and change EVERYTHING you've ever done for food. And then you've gotta learn to exercise and put up with being farking bad at it at first and having people stare at you and laugh at you. Its a shiatty experience.

I'm some 65 lbs lighter then I used to be at 210, I want to be 25-30 lighter then I am now with more muscle mass. But it was farking humiliating going to the gym at first. It was farking unpleasent feeling my own gut bounce out of time when I tried to run. I used to farking hate the gym untill I got my diet to the point that I lost a fair bit of weight and could do the exercise without humilitating myself so badly.

I'm not saying fine be fat - for fark sake get healthy - But have some compassion for fat people. Its not an easy thing to cure. Learning to be so hungry it makes you want to be sick because your metabolism is all farked up and geared for the way you used to eat farking blows. Feeling like shiat for weeks because your sofarking hungry, and then it gets worse after you work out the first few times, feeling the muscles ache on top of the hunger thing is the worst.

Advertising is not about reality it is about perception.

One thing I notice no one has mentione, I'm sure cause they did not RTFA is Mc Donald's does not have a problem with not hiring fatties. They have a problem with some dumb advertising guy puttin in a memo, which was leaked to the press, "NO FATTIES!!!"

I dont think anybody has labeled you that. Maybe the prochoice part. However, i have a feeling that the "with restrictions on the rampant use of abortion as birth control" is self imposed. Twelve word long labels just dont stick.

Yeah. Depression can cause people to eat too much. Heck. I sat down and ate half a pumpkin pie right out of the tin when I realized Bush won the election.

I do that when I'm depressed or angry. At least I know that about myself now. But the old habit came flying back on 11-2.

scootah:

I've been 10 pounds overweight before and felt plenty fat, ESPECIALLY being a female. People don't let you live it down, trust me. While I've never been obese, I've never been completely secure with my body. I have compassion for people who work hard and at least try, not people who sit around and eat their feelings while wishing they were thinner. If you want to be thin, it's within the scope of possibility. You just need to do it. I know it ain't easy, I've worked at it myself.

One day a red-eyed Ronald McDonald will be sitting somewhere in the smelly bowels of Hell, staring downward with an empty gaze, the grease paint running down his face, his red wig, covered in fecal matter...and he will curse God for his plight. His gloved hands will be shaking and a fat tear will trickle down his shiney face as he realizes that his existence had been for naught.

And this corporation hosts a cancer house for children???

they are millions of physical activities. start trying a few. think to yourself you'll try a dozen and list a good 20-30 possibles, complete with addresses where you can train. i'll bet after one, two or three you'll find something you enjoy, or someone you like talking to who does one of them. be open, be yourself. the first step is the hardest, because there are the most reasons not to do something, and some of them seem like pretty good reasons. fcuk that. just do it. don't let life pass you by. most successful people have to make giant leaps in order to kick themselves into the right gear. start tomorrow and i'll bet within two weeks you'll thank me.

remember the key to anything, especially exercise, is to leave yourself wanting more. dcon't overtrain or allow yourself to get bored. don't set yourself impossible goals, just set out to enjoy the sport. everything else follows

Ruta,

I noticed your jab about Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in your post and had to respond, because I have it and frankly, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. I am hoping I can educate you and any other idiot out there who may decide to start spewing opinions about a syndrome they know nothing about.

Right now, no one knows what causes PCOS. There's probably a genetic tendency for it. There's also a theory that estrogenic chemicals in the enviroment (of which their are many, mostly in pesticides) caused some kind of endocrine hyperstimulation in childhood in a certain percentage of the population that was genetically susceptible to it. All I know is that my aunt has this syndrome, my grandmother has aspects of it and my great-grandmother definitely had it, although it wasn't diagnosed back then.

True PCOS is not caused by being overweight. There are thin women who have it. There are overweight women who definitely do not have it. If obesity caused PCOS, a greater percentage of women would be affected by it (right now, about 5-10 percent of the population has PCOS).

The reason we're seeing an explosion in the number of people diagnosed with PCOS is because it's only in the last few years that there's been widespread awareness of the syndrome, and for the first time there is a set of bloodwork results that doctors can point to and say "this person has PCOS." PCOS was first identified in 1935 but the clinical symptoms can vary so much from patient to patient that it's hard to identify in many people. You can have PCOS without even having detectable polycystic ovaries.

PCOS is caused by some fundamental failure or compromise of the endocrine system. It may not be hereditary, but it's not the result of obesity. Some women with PCOS are obese, but that's because the insulin resistance caused by the syndrome can make it incredibly hard to lose weight, particularly since most doctors, up until a couple of years ago, persisted in putting PCOS patients on low-calorie, high-carb diets that exacerbated their insulin resistance and compromised their metabolism.

Any questions? If so, ask me. And please, the next time you decide to postulate about something, have your facts straight. Although I know that's not exactly the Fark way. I'll be sure to share your comments about genes and PCOS and obesity with some of the PCOS women I know who weigh 125 lbs, I'm sure they'll get a kick out of it.

One thing I will never understand is why fit people at gyms feel the need to make fun of fat people who are there trying to work out. First you biatch at them that they need to exercise and when they actually make the effort to work out they still get made fun of.

/And yes, I used to be the fat one getting made fun of at the gym until I lost some weight.

2004-11-05 03:21:06 PM
Even if you eat McCrapDonalds every day and still don't get fat, you could still be making a WAY better choice for what you put in your body. It's processed, fatty, nasty stuff and not very nutritionally valueable. Even if you aren't overweight you can be negatively impacting your cholesterol levels.

And just having a naturally slow metabolism doesn't make you fat. Knowing that you have a slow metabolism and continuing to eat more than you burn off through metabolism and exercise makes you fat. Just because you start at a disadvantage at bith with your BMR, you shouldn't use that as an excuse for obesity; in this case obesity results from poor decision making based on what you know about your body. And, you can raise your BMR with weightlifting and regular cardio.

Being overweight or obese, poor diet and lack of exercise are contributing factors to serious medical conditions- heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, some cancers, and a lot of other health problems. I really dislike that obesity has been classified as a disease by medicare and that my taxes are now paying for it, because for most of the people being treated, making healthier lifestyle choices would be the solution. Even someone who gets gastric bypass can still become overweight again if they make poor food choices and don't exercise.

Combination of contentment with wifey, spurious "7-year rule" of changing metabolism (married at 28 y/o) and less time for sports (compounded by 2 consecutive knee injuries) "helped" me!

Okay let me point out this fact before I say anything else.
Yes those people that are overweight due to obsessive compulsive disorders or problems with there thyroid glands and such I truely due feel for, and believe they do deserve and need help.

That being said.

This article is a load of horseshiat. It's more of the same crap with people trying to say It's not the parents fault their kids are fat. Blame it on the Corporation. Yep I see them everyday going house to house shovin quarterpounders down kids gullets. It's time for the Dam asshat liberal media to get the fark off their high-horse and start tellin the dam truth. The fact is parents are lettin theit kids sit on their ass all day in front of a tv or video game and thats all the excercise they get. Then the parents turn around and get this crap for nutrition fast food and feed it to there kids on a daily basis....but thats McDonalds fault again.....

People need to take GodDam responsibilities for their FARKIN' actions, and stop blamin everyone else for what is clearly their own damn shortcomings.

That being said...would you want a stuttering schizo lawyer representing you if you were up for murder? Or maybe we should have drug addicts working at the dispencery at the hospital. It's the same damn thing

What it comes down to is people need to come to the realization that McDonalds is a company, and they are here to make money. That, and that people are not stupid. They know McDonalds food is not good for them, but they go there anyone, for convience, or whatever reason. It's their own choice.

So far, pretty much everyone on Lost has been useless except for the doctor and the former Republican Guard for Saddam. It's no Twin Peaks or Millennium, but it's the only new show I'm watching this season.

The first two episodes were pretty slow. Now, each episode centers around a different character. This week was the hobbit. I reckon the fat guy will have his own episode soon.

I lost almost 12 pounds in about a month by simply cutting Fast Food down to once per week and drinking only Diet Sodas. I still have an occassional Sweet Tea when we are out, and a few beers during football, but that's it. I don't exercise any more than I did (which is probably about 33% what I should be doing) and I still peeled off a dozen pounds QUICKLY. Consider the amount of sugar in each can of soda and you'll understand why it's so easy to maintain a heavy weight.

I am fairly fit and I always go the extra mile to be nice to the people who are overweight at the gym because I know how hard it is to make the decision to work out and stick with it, especially in an atmosphere like that. I lost like 20 lbs in 5 months after I had surgery (couldn't walk easily for 2 yrs.) but I never really paid attention to what the other people at the gym thought of me. I'm sorry shiatty people made you feel uncomfortable.

I seriously want to go and say "hey, it's awesome that you are here! Great workout!" but I figured that they would think I was being rude for coming over and saying things like that. So I basically treat everyone the same except for the skeevy guys who like to watch me when I'm in the weight room.

I'm not skeevy just because I like to stare at the girls when they work out! They don't seem to like it when I rub myself, tho...
