At least when the optical reader failed they have the paper votes to do the recount from. Curious if they brought in a new optical reader as you slide your ballot into it when you are done voting and it tallies the vote right then, spitting it out if you have overvoted or it can't read it so you can fill out a new ballot. If they haven't brought in a new one then there could be some folks votes that aren't counted for a particular race if they accidentally overvoted.
